Big Fetch Mile

2:02pm, 23 Jun 2017
(email sent to attendees - but everyone welcome - just make sure you've put the race in your portfolio and given a predicted time)

Hi Fetchies,

There’s just over one week to go until the Big Fetch Mile – I do hope that you can all still come along. Here’s some important information:

Getting Here
==
We are aiming to have our first race at 1.10pm, so please make sure you’re there in plenty of time to get yourself warmed up and smeared in linament. Bedford International Athletics Stadium is at MK41 9SB – there should be plenty of parking, and there’s also the cinema car park opposite, and any number of nearby side-streets.

The Mile Races
==
We have use of the stadium track for a couple of hours, which should be enough time for everyone to participate in a mile race, and some shorter races too, for those that want. If you’re planning on running, please can you make sure you’ve added your prediction here:

fetcheveryone.com/race-report-edit.php?id=1468342

We’ll put you into groups so you’ll be racing against people of the same standard. Be optimistic – you’re amongst friends; but also don’t break yourself – we want you to enjoy the experience. The last group will be the fastest ones – so we can all relax and watch them sweat it out!

Cake
==
As is traditional, feel free to bring and share your cakes. Eat at your own risk.

Mugs and Kit
==
We’ll be selling some kit – including some brand-new Fetch mugs (£10), Buffs (£10) and a £5 rummaging box of older shirts and vests that have been in the cupboard for a while now. I can’t do card payments on the day, but I’m also happy to let you take stuff on a trust basis if you haven’t got cash :-)

Fetch Everyone
==
It’d be great if we can get more people to attend. Please pester your fellow Fetchies, friends, family, club mates, parkrunners, and anyone else you know. It’s free to come along, people just need to be signed up to Fetch, and clicked through the big banner on the home page. Spectators also welcome – there’s a nice grandstand!

Afterwards
==
If the weather is lovely, we’ll head over to the beer garden at the Beefeater Priory Marina (MK41 9DJ) for something isotonic, and grub for those that want it. If the weather is awful, we might still do that anyway.

Give me a shout if you have any questions,

Thanks,
Ian / Fetch

  • If it's "free to come along", how is the cost of hiring the stadium being covered? I'd be happy to make a contribution.

As well as my own run, I'd be happy to pace other miles for e.g 10, 9, and possibly 8 minutes - they'd be my warm up ;-)

Motivational Sounds

10:29am, 23 Jun 2017
A few years ago, I got sent a GPS watch that promised to pump out inspirational sound bytes from a professional athlete. Except it was pretty lame, and would do the same ones over and over again (I think there were only three variations).

As you've hopefully seen by now, I am building apps for iPhone and (next month) Android. I want to include some voice prompting in these apps - starting with straightforward stuff like "Mile 6 in 8:43". Side note: all the ones I've seen seem to be very starchy and slow... "6 *pause* miles *pause* 8 *pause* minutes *pause* and *pause* forty *pause* three *pause* seconds". I reckon this can definitely be a lot sharper and avoid interrupting your choooones for as long as it does.

So I want to make that bit as unobtrusive as possible... but also, because this is Fetcheveryone, and we're a community of real people, not robots, I wanted to include some motivational words from all of you lot (and yes, there'll be an OFF switch)

I'd like to start by making a list of ten Fetchies to provide sound bytes. In your comment below, nominate five Fetchies (not yourself) who you think would do an excellent sound byte. The folks who have the most nominations on Monday will make the cut.

[As far as technical stuff goes, if you're chosen, you just need to be able to record a sound file - which you can do on your phone, or computer. I will be trimming them down to ten seconds - which is plenty of time to say loads - go on, time it.]

Of Fetchies whose voices I know I would say GordonG (because he used to do an excellent podcast) You, eL Bee (even though he's more of a cyclist these days) and Carp. I'm also going to put in two whose voices I have never heard Sharkie and Fleecy because I suspect they would be good. And I agree with McGoohan about 'Is it Prague' :-)

Fetch fug (available at the Fetch mile)

3:59pm, 21 Jun 2017
I'm planning to sell these for £10 each at the Big Mile on July 1st.

Here's a more realistic view of the colours (because the printed out bit of paper that we attached to one of our mugs is a bit faded - need a new printer).

We're doing these at the event because posting mugs is a bit of a 'mare - but if you're keen to get hold of one, and can wait until we see you (or your special envoy), then leave a comment. Ta.

Donating Blood - my Vlog

4:47pm, 19 Jun 2017
A few months ago, I did a little experiment to try to measure the impact of giving blood. Having donated before, I knew it would have some short-term effects, but I'd never tried to put some figures on it. In the week or so before I donated, I ran an eyeballs-out 5k, and also an interval session.

With these in the bag, I donated my blood, recording the whole process, and filmed my return to running. NB there's a very brief scene with a needle, if you're heavily squeamish; and a middle-aged man running to the point of exhaustion, if you like a good laugh.

  • Interesting to watch - I donate blood approx. 3 times a year - I don't find it has a massive impact on my training but I am sometimes caught out - up to 6 days after I would still run a LSR at a slower pace as I sometimes run out of steam. Like you. shorter and faster I can do, but feel more tired. I would personally not donate in the 10 days before a target race. The best training week I ever had was when I had no choice but to deliver the beginners r/w session that evening - it seemed to really help me recover!

  • I went for a long Fapping session today, Mr F and had one or two issues.

It measured out at 14.5 miles for a 6.5 mile route. Partly this was my fault. We went indoors and I think this blew its brain although it did do a massive leap to the East at one point:

  • However, this one:
    fetcheveryone.com/gallery-showphoto.php?id=89380
was when we were outside. I think it lost the signal briefly but locked on again somewhere a *lot* further East.

When strava Garmin or TomTom lose the signal they sort of fill in from the next 'good' point. Whatever Fapp is using seems to take more of a stab at it...

Plotted me fine for about an hour and then latched itself onto a passing plane (or something) and ran me due North into the Firth of Forth and then gave up entirely. On the plus-side, I now 'own' some sea by the Bass Rock!!

Is this an ok way to report or should I feed your back instead? What specific info do you need! I've kept the errant route and I've also hand-plotted what it should have looked like.

Can I kick it?

12:41pm, 15 Jun 2017
Katie will tell you, I looked pretty ashen and sorry for myself by the time I finished coding yesterday. Apple had rejected the first draft of app, and although on the face of it, there are some small changes, it's easy to wonder whether it will keep coming back with errors. And my app coding skills are new and sketchy - so right now any changes have a high cat to pigeon ratio.

Being the smart person that she is, Katie got me out to walk the dogs in a bit of sunshine, and helped me find a bit of perspective. A night's sleep, and I'm looking at things with a clearer head (and some custard creams) - and have hopefully come up with some improvements that will pass the Apple test, and make the app better. And like D2 said in the comments, I am learning loads as I go - and I'm in the luxurious position whereby you lot are all on my side. And when this does eventually go right, as it must, it'll feel pretty good. So I've stopped feeling sorry for myself, and have every intention of kicking some arse.

1) Your app's name, subtitle, icons, screenshots, or previews to be displayed on the App Store include references to the price of your app or the service it provides, which is not considered a part of these metadata items.

2) We noticed that the user is taken to Safari to sign in or register for an account, which provides a poor user experience. To resolve this issue, please revise your app to enable users to sign in or register for an account in the app.

A ball-ache for sure, but I can sort that. Bear with.

1:31pm, 14 Jun 2017
I've had an automated email from Apple to say that my app is now 'In Review'. This means (I think) that someone from Apple is actually trying it out :-)

AND

hot on the heels from that, I've just had two emails advertising treatments for fungal nail infections. Henmania!

Katie saw a link the other day that described toenail issues - and suggests that I might have something called Rams Horn toes. I've just googled it, and I feel like I might have gotten away quite lightly. Whatever you do, don't google it unless you've got that bucket ready.

Your app status is Waiting For Review

12:23pm, 13 Jun 2017
Told you :-)

This morning, after much wangling, I've jumped through the necessary hoops to get V1 of the iPhone app uploaded to the App Store, where it awaits review from whoever or whatever does that. I've no idea what the likelihood of success is, nor how long the review process takes, but I've swum through the treacle thus far, and will continue to inch forward until we fricking well get there.

It's been exciting. I took the app for another trial run this morning on our run home from the garage, and it did reasonably well. Aside from about 5 seconds of batshit craziness as soon as I hit 'START', it tracked the route pretty well, and was fairly close to the stats reported by Katie's Garmin.

Since my last progress report, I've added a 'Save as Walk' button, and a 'Switch to KM' option too.

More news when I get it. Meanwhile, have a look at this sketch for a Fetchpoint app:

A2B

10:39am, 13 Jun 2017
I'm blogging more this week. #justsaying :-)

The car had to go into the garage today, to have a new cam belt fitted. It's an interesting little place at the back of the industrial estate, with absolutely no concept of putting on a professional frontage for the benefit of customers. But I don't mind that, so long as the car comes back in one piece and the engine doesn't fly through the bonnet next time we go on the dual carriageway. In fact, I quite like the sort of garage where your eyes are drawn to the various interesting piles of car parts, and other detritus, and would quite happily have spent some time nosing around, had I not felt intimidated by the gang of smoking mechanics looking at me and Katie in our running outfits :-)

Our plan was to drop the car off and run home - and it got me thinking about A to B runs. It's pretty rare that I do anything other than start and end at home - and it always has the potential to feel like a bit more of an adventure. I've seen people like McG and Chris go off on public transport to run a certain section of this or that; and Binks' story about how he started running one day, and ended up miles away, having to get the train home - and it does certainly appeal.

Probably my favourite A2B runs have been at the Round Norfolk Relay. With all the added excitement of being part of a team, and (variously) running in total darkness on a quiet country road; watching the sun come up; carrying the baton on the final leg to complete the relay... all added to the thrill. It's the original Marathon run - a journey, for a purpose, come what may.

This week, your challenge is to write a blog about your favourite A2B run ever - in as many words as you'd like. The blog that gets the most comments by midday on the 20th will win a Buff (now just £10 in the Shoppe, btw). Include 'A2B' in the title, so that we all know what it's about.

To the journey!

Garmin Communicator Plugin

10:01am, 12 Jun 2017
Only a small number of you are using this plugin now (less than ten visits per day, according to my stats). Garmin stopped supporting it several years back, and the major browsers have all but stopped supporting plugins in general. Chrome doesn't support plugins at all, I think.

Anyways... it's been pointed out that the plugin has taken a bit of a blow, as a result of the site upgrade to HTTPS. And when I say blow, I mean in the sense of 'candles out' :-/

For those of you who were still using it, the best way to get your info off your Garmin watch and onto Fetch is to install Garmin Express on your computer. This bit of software sends your runs and rides to the Garmin database, and (if you give Fetch permission to see it) Garmin will then automatically forward the data on to the Fetch server. I know some folks were a bit put off by some bugs in the very early releases of Garmin Express, but as far as I'm aware, it works pretty smoothly now.

Apologies to anyone who's affected by this - if I can help you to get set up with Garmin Express, or if you want to let me know why GE isn't an option for you, drop me a line via feedback.

Fetch App - strong and stable testing

10:50am, 9 Jun 2017
Despite being full of sweet potato, broccoli and sausages on Wednesday evening, I took the new Fetch app out to give it a try. It was really useful to see what the app is like to use, and I came back with a nice list of rough edges that I can knock off:

1) Decimal places. I was a bit over-aggressive with my rounding to begin with - so my route was very zig-zagged. Easy to fix - just add an extra decimal place to the recorded latitude and longitude. Here's part of my run with the extra accuracy added - it's still a little bit wobbly, but I think this is about the limit of phone GPS: fetcheveryone.com/t-13860838

2) The logout button is too easy to press whilst you're holding the phone. A mile or so in, and I pulled the phone out of my pocket, and found myself staring at the login screen. It just needs an 'are you sure?' option to guard against that. Doh.

3) Something barmy is happening with the splits and data when it comes in. If you look at the link again, it's not calculated the 0.45 split right in the notes box, and if you look at the 'Pace Bands' graph, there's a weird missing-middle thing going on. But that might be completely unrelated, as I had to remake that graph recently, because of reasons :-)

Overall, I'm pleased and really quite excited - and hopefully the process of getting Apple's approval to get it listed in the App Store isn't too onerous.

Android update: I downloaded Android Studio last night, and will start playing with that as soon as I can. Although I've never built an app for Android before (and don't currently have an Android phone, which might prove tricky for testing), a lot of the technical challenges have been solved by working through the process once already - so it will hopefully not take too long to get the equivalent in place.

For those of you who are hungry for more advanced features, my blog from Jun 7th (somewhere below) has a bit of a road map. I might even look at doing a poll to guide the development - if you're not already sick of those :-)

Thanks!

  • Nice one, Fetch -- I've dabbled with Android apps, though haven't exactly laid a whole one; there's a decent emulator as part of Studio that you can test with, and I suspect there will be no shortage of real-world testing available in Fetchland

HTTPS is here

10:19am, 9 Jun 2017
You might have noticed this as of about 10am (or equally you might not), but all traffic on the site is now over HTTPS, rather than HTTP. Your browser should be a bit happier about this, at least. Let me know if you spot any unusual problems.

  • Why do some pages show a padlock, and some not - like this one (although it is https if the url is revealed)? Microsoft Edge.

  • A lack of padlock means that one of the elements of the page is served via http, not https. Everything that comes from the Fetch server is now https (even if it says http), but there are a few third-party things that are imported on some pages. For example, I import some Javascript files to make Google Maps work; likewise our graph software comes from the Highcharts server; and last, but perhaps the most interesting, our Google Ads can sometimes pull in http content.

Fetch App progress

1:14pm, 7 Jun 2017
Here are a couple of screenshots of V1 of the Fetch GPS app for iPhone, which I hope to submit to the App Store any day now (although I'm not sure how long approval will take).

It's deliberately VERY simple, just to get things off the ground, but I hope everyone with a phone will try it out, and help me to improve it by giving feedback.

The first screen (not shown) asks you for your login details - and the app will remember these for subsequent use, so you don't need to keep putting them in. Once you're logged in, you get taken to this screen:

The fields are fairly self-explanatory, so no point in me going through those. I haven't yet made an option to switch to km - but I think I can probably squeeze that in somewhere for the first release. After you've hit start, and run for a bit, you can hit stop, and then the buttons change as follows:

You can then choose to save it as a run or a ride, or just reset for next time. Pressing save will automatically add the run to your Fetch log, and will open up the relevant page in Safari, so you can see all the stats that you're used to.

Improvements to follow in subsequent versions:

1) switch to map view - see where you've been
2) voice prompting (mile notifications etc)
3) integration with games like Fetchpoint / Conquercise for real-time play
4) flexibility to log as a walk etc.
5) cadence sensing (using the accelerometers? Coding fun lies ahead!)
6) pace guidance options
7) interval session manager (build the session the way you want it)
EDIT: 8) option to enable live tracking during racing

I'm resisting adding more analysis into the app itself, as I think that my efforts here are best served by making the website-based analysis work as well as possible - as I think the site is a reasonably friendly mobile browsing experience.

There will also be an accompanying Android equivalent, although as I don't even have an Android phone at the moment, and nor have I ever done any coding for Android, it might take a wee while - but hopefully not too long.

So if you have a smartphone, and even if you don't foresee a need to use this particular app on a regular basis, then please join the following group for updates: fetcheveryone.com/groups-view.php?id=1260 . Not only will an army of eyeballs and friendly reviewers be very useful, but you might also bump into runners who will ask you all about Fetch. One of the questions I am frequently asked is "do you have an app?" - and you will be able to say "yes, we do" :-)

The images show "Last Lap" and "Current Lap Pace", I'm assuming there is both a "Stop" and "Lap" button during the actual activity? Is there currently the ability to set-up an auto-lap (i.e. every mile), or is that a development for the future?

https access to the site

12:46pm, 6 Jun 2017
Recently, browsers have started to negatively highlight sites that use 'HTTP' (you know, that bit at the start of web addresses) rather than 'HTTPS' to deliver web pages. They usually do this by either showing:

1) some sort of exclamation (some or all of the content you're looking at is served via ordinary HTTP), or
2) some sort of padlock symbol (the content you're looking at is all served over HTTPS).

As of today, there's a HTTPS version of Fetcheveryone - you can find it here:

fetcheveryone.com

It should absolutely no different to use, but it means that any data you send to the Fetch server is encrypted by your browser before it's sent - so it avoids the possibility of a third-party with sufficient technical know-how from snooping on your data. I should say, that in 12 years of running Fetch over HTTP, there's absolutely no evidence that this has ever happened.

It's my plan to push all of the visitors on the site onto HTTPS automatically, but before I do that, I thought it'd be useful to give you the chance to kick the tyres.

Things I am interested in
Can you log in and out ok?
Are there any broken links or images that won't load, or functionality that won't work?
Does your browser show a secure icon next to the URL?

What I'm not interested in (in this case)
Suggestions for improvements to the site :-P
Errors that happen irrespective of whether you're on HTTP or HTTPS

It's possible that a few pages will still show up as 'insecure'. For example, if you click the 'Routes' tab in the menu, that page is classed as insecure at present. In this particular instance, the little thumbnail map at the top right of the big image is a hard-coded http request - and just one little thing like that is enough to remove the 'secure' status.

Sorry for a technical post. All I'm really asking is that you try the link I've posted above, and see whether things seem vaguely normal (or as normal as they were before). Thanks for reading. Peace out.
