Fetch Games: Checkpoints (and what's wrong with them)

5:58pm, 19 Jul 2016
Those of you who are used to getting fmails for Checkpoints will have noticed that they've stopped recently. The system was sending out thousands of messages, and only a relatively small proportion were being read. Time for a change :-)

My first update meant that you only get notifications whenever you beat your time, or when you link a new pair of points. BUT when I made that change, there were quite a lot of users who said "I like to see how close I was" etc. So I've also added a new box when you view a training run in detail, that shows you the checkpoint pairs you travelled through, along with your time, and your best time. This will start to apply from today, so any runs and rides you log from here on should have that. I might even get around to adding that retrospectively, but I might not.

I'd like to gather your ideas on improvements to the game, as it's not setting the world on fire as it is. When I look at my overall map:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/checkpoints.php

even I'm not sure what to do :-) When I click one of the checkpoints, there are dozens of offshoots, and choosing one is a bit fiddly. There are busy connections between close points, and ones that are miles apart, where I've managed to miss the one I should have hit along the way. In my opinion, these missed connections cloud the usability, and don't add anything to the game.

The leaderboard is based on everything within a fixed square near your location. In my square there are 37 different points - so if each point connects to five others, there are potentially 180+ connections. And the most popular ones have over 25 connections each - so I wouldn't be surprised if there were twice as many feasible permutations as that. So collecting every possible permutation seems to be an off-putting and pointless task that relies on luck (missing out an interstitial point) and just running lots of miles. Collecting is for Conquercise. This game is about being speedy between two popular points.

So I think this might work better if each square has (say) 10 'championship' connections, based on the most popular checkpoint pairs (the system has been running for about 2 years, so there's lots of data) - and it would be your scores at each of these special connections that would contribute to an overall leaderboard. Easier to visualise them on a map, and we could even generate a route that would enable you to have a crack at all of them in one go.

But before I go ahead and code that, I thought I'd gather your opinions. Because if someone has a better idea, I'm not above pinching it and claiming all the glory :-) Over to you :-)

PS There are still 7 owls left - see my previous blog (below).

  • I used to read the fmails about the checkpoints but I never went out on a run with a view to joining checkpoints or beating my times on particular checkpoint. Perhaps I hadn't really 'got it' before now. I'd noticed the fmails had been replaced by notifications but when I run again this week I will take a bit more notice of it and seek out particular checkpoints to connect... however I have no better ideas than yours I'm afraid, sorry!

  • I use the checkpoints as an indicator as to how my training is going, and I do sometimes do speed sessions based on a pair of checkpoints to try to beat my best time. I don't really pay any attention to other people's times for that connection though.

  • I'm not sure I'm in the target market for the games that revolve around route planning - I mostly run tried and tested loops over and over again - so sometimes it's nice to see a new Checkpoint PB. If I do plot a new route it's based on the mileage I'm aiming at, safety and surroundings - and generally getting away from the immediate area. This is why Fetchpoint ultimately defeated me as I got tired of feeling like I 'had' to run around within a mile of the house (all residential side streets) collecting bugs before I could go anywhere interesting! Very occasionally I look at Conquersize for a zone that I haven't reached yet - but the ones local to me as yet unconquered are largely so for a very good reason - the fact that you might be risking life and limb to run there. I also agree with LD that where there are several ways of running between two checkpoints the time improvements are sometimes just because you've run the shorter route?
    Autumnleaves
    9:27am, 20th Jul 2016
  • I like checkpoints as I often run the same routes, and just occasionally I'll put in a fast time on a section of one of them and get a PB. If it's not as fast I do like to see how far off I was. I don't really compare my times with others ( others running in my area tend to be men....so doesn't seem fair comparison) Maybe could added seasons best times for checkpoints? Or even personal league table for an individual's most common check points ( maybe most frequently run 5 checkpoints say)with monthly best, seasons best, PB and average. Then you could compare your days run with your own personal achievements.

    Thanks Fetch

  • I confess I used the fetchpoint email as a way of checking easily (because it used to "bing" on my mobile) whether the data had transferred sucessfully from my wattch to the Garmin site to Fetch wherre it was useful (which process seems be be a lot less reliable than Fetch! :-)). (There's a suggestion in there in it's own right!)
The thing that always puzzled me was there were so many ways to go between the same 2 checkpoints, and some of the connections were only possible on the map if you had wings or swam the river, so I never got too bothered about the times & distances. One of the rare places where Strava/Garmin is slightly better is in the use of "segments" - fixed points, shorter distances. Sort of like the championship connections you're proposing, I think.
If I'm getting the "you've got faster" mails then I'm fairly happy for that alone, but sadly I won't get many of them.
Good to see you trying to make it better though, always. Thank you.

    12:31pm, 20th Jul 2016
  • I use it to see if my pace is better or worse than my best time between points. I also look to get a faster time occasionally by looking for a shorter route :-) Also occasionally I look to connect new points so I have many connections from one point.
The latest problem I have is the square around me doesn't cover closer checkpoints because my main checkpoint is on the edge of the area, if my main checkpoint could be centralised that would be better.
Also I have a large junction at my main checkpoint and start running at various sides of the junction so consequently I have several checkpoints on one junction.
Thanks for your time and efforts sorting these games out for us all and caring what we think and want from each game. :-)

  • I think the post I lost earlier went something like this...

I don't really 'get' CP as a game - there seems to be no competitive element to it, especially as routes between CPs are often comparing geographic apples with geographic pears. Unlike the concept of strava and Garmin segments, which are generally based on defined sections of a known and popular routes, checkpoint connections are random. It seems to a be a lot of data and very little game. If I do score anywhere on the leader board it's by chance and of little interest. It's one real use was to tell if a run had appeared via Garmin, and that has now gone.

I think the only way to properly gameify it would be to allow every user to earn the write to add their own segments. Maybe everyone starts off with two segments and earns the write to create more by moving up leaderboards, and if they move down they lose those credits and their segment gets wiped. Is this competitive component, or another approach to getting credits, enough to differentiate it from Strava? If not, I'd question whether it is a good use of your time. I think the competition needs to be about routes rather than randomly joining two point.

Your Favourite Fetch Game?

11:08am, 15 Jul 2016
You might have noticed that I've been doing some work on the Fetch games recently - UTMOST has had a makeover, and this week I've updated the Betting game, to make it a bit more friendly and fun. Have a look: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/betting.php

And I've done a poll - which is your favourite Fetch Game:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/polls-view.php?id=5512

Vote in the poll, and say why in the comments :-)

  • I voted Cconquercise, wih Fetchpoint a close second. I did prefer it when all-time records counted towards zone ownership because it seems a little unfair that years of domination count for nothing after a while, but I do understand that this makes it a bit more interesting for newcomers to an area. I thought I use to get a notification when someone else took control of one of my zones. Has this changes? I'd also just like to admit that I did spend a while looking for the comments box on the poll before catching on, so any problems are very probably between keyboard and chair.

  • Conquersize again. I too wondered at the demise of the all-time total (seeing as I moved), but I can live with it. I like the idea of covering new zones, I don't go much out of my way locally, but because I go away hiking regularly, I Like visiting new places (and pubs) in order to get zones, especially the long distance walks I've done.

  • Conquercize, despite the new rules. I like the visual representation of where in the world I've run/exercised and I'm amused by the idea of 'owning' bits of the country. My other favourite game is Thingy-thon, although it's not really a game I suppose.
    Angus Clydesdale
    11:59am, 15th Jul 2016
  • Conquercise just edges it over Fetchpoint - I like exploring new places! I also miss the all time totals, as my zones tend to be places few other fetchies have been to. No chance of ever owning my home zone as there's an Ultra runner round ere.

Fetchpoint is fun but there are just too many bugs - I lose thousands of points every day and running up and down every side street near home to clear them is much less fun than going on long runs / rides away from home. IMHO.

So I do a good trade in flowers but get wiped out if I don't run near home for a week or two...

I check both of those after most training!

UTMOST I used to like as I was going up fairly often due to players not playing anymore and getting faster. Now I think I'll mostly be going down due to not racing as much. Ihave a very fast 5 mile time I don't understand too!
Betting I've never understood the game and the new layout doesn't help (but then I've never really understood real betting!)
Checkpoints not really my bag. Not a fan of segments on the other thing either and now Garmin are shoving them at me too. Nah.
    JustCommando!
    12:04pm, 15th Jul 2016
  • I voted Utmost - I find it fits nicely with trying to improve my race times. I do Conquersize but now the notifications seem to have stopped (?) I don't often look apart from when I now I've been somewhere new. Whilst I like the idea of checkpoints I don't really get how it works with the cycling v running thing. I tried Fetchpoint but it didn't really suit me (I had the same thought about Pokemon Go though!).

  • Fetchpoint was a big incentive to get out there for me, until I moved to rural Wiltshire where the number of inaccessible bugs draining my points every day caused me to stop looking. I haven't quite brought myself to press the "stop playing" button though...My new favourite is probably Conquersize although I'm not seriously hooked yet.
    Alice the Camel
    12:37pm, 15th Jul 2016
  • Actually, my favourite game at the moment is probably run the sum! Although I don't run everyday, on the days I do I like the challenge of exceeding a set distance.
I like UTMOST as it brings out the competitor in me. When approaching a race I like knowing what time I need (usually unobtainable) to gain a place/avoid relegation!
I loved fetchpoint when it first came out but then I started training more with other runners and had less control over where I ran. That, and the loss of the prizes, meant I stopped looking at the map so often and now when I am planning the route I often forget to check fetchpoint first.

Conquersize is great for when I'm away as I like to see new zones on my map and it forces me to explore!
Checkpoints I can take or leave.
Betting I have only ever dabbled with.

  • Conquercise (followed by fetchpoint). They fit around my ethos of running - to go explore new places. They also help choose areas for long runs to visit. I also thought there was a notification when someone nicked my zones, so I knew to go and grab them back! Utmost, betting, etc don't really do much for me as they are just something that happen rather than being something you can directly influence (i.e. I can choose to go and visit a new zone each week; I can't choose to have a 5 min PB each week to move up the leaderboard).

Even More Utmost Than Before...

11:32am, 5 Jul 2016
I've rebuilt the UTMOST game, to hopefully cure the dodgy divisional system. I've also implemented a suggestion (can't remember who made it - I'm really sorry) that we switch to weekly promotion and relegation, to spice things up a bit.

For those of you that don't know, the game is based around your best race times - and you're placed in a division with people who are of a similar standard. If you don't race, or if you don't log races in your Race Portfolio, then this isn't the game for you :-) But if you only race at one distance, even if that's only parkrun, you can earn points and play.

I will be rebuilding ALL the divisions on Friday at midday, so if you'd like to get in at a suitable position, then make sure you've signed up before then:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/game-utmost.php

(after midday Friday, new players will have to start at the bottom - but they can rise more quickly, thanks to the weekly turnaround)

Thanks :-)

15 days later...

11:39am, 1 Jul 2016
Just wondering how folks are getting on with the mobile version of the site...

I am still making changes - but hopefully some less noticeable ones. A lot of you pointed at pages that needed a lot of scrolling to get to the juicy stuff - so I've been looking at 'tightening up' the pages vertically on the mobile view.

One big change (that I've only just made - so you may never find this blog) is to re-order the main menu. Train has leapfrogged Forum, because I'd like to think it's the one thing that brings us all here. When people are exploring a site, one of the things that they often do is click the items in the menu one at a time, to see what's what - so it makes sense to get the training log under noses asap :-) Blogs have moved up the list quite a bit, and the big demotion is for Injury, which will soon move into the Train section.

As the design matures, I will be adding in some subtle stuff - like for instance, when you view your training log on an iPad, you get a little bit more detail when you're in landscape mode. I've only sniffed at that particular lamppost so far, but the leg's going up :-)

None of this means I have forgotten the desktop view - and I know that some of you are finding it a bit 'whitespacey'. I will have a day when I try to work on this - but for now, use your lovely big monitor to full effect :-)

Overall, the change appears to be a positive one. Google Analytics gives a 'bounce rate' for the site - it's a measure of the percentage of people who arrive and then leave without exploring *any* pages at all. In the last two months, it was 24.9%, but 31.5% on mobile - but since the change, it's down to 22.1%, and mobile down to 29.0%. Saying this, I feel like the manager of a casino that offers free drinks and hides all signs of the outside world to encourage you to lose track of time... do you feel sleepy? Just try to fall asleep on that refresh button :-)

But srsly, I want (and have always wanted) to make this a place for everyone, so please do keep the feedback coming about pages that you'd like me to look at. And just to prove I haven't been taken over by some corporate reptile, here's me safely in my brexit hat:

Click here to suggest fetcheveryone's blog for today's highlights.

Comments

  • I noticed it because I keep clicking on Train instead of Forum :-) I am fully adjusted to the new mobile site, off to make myself a Brexit hat.

  • I'm much more used to the mobile site now. I've downgraded my 'Worst Site Ever!' to an 'Indifferent' and on to an 'Actually Quite Like It Now'.
The route picture on the front page still doesn't fit though, landscape or portrait. (Windows Phone). That's no big deal though.

  • THAT'S why I've clicked on Train instead of Forum twice in the last 10 minutes :-)
Nice to see I am a) paying attention, b) able to read and c) capable of learning from my mistakes.
