Cake, invalidated

3:45pm, 31 Jan 2015
Early start this morning, taking Katie to the station for a teaching day in London. It seems a long time ago now, I can't imagine how tired Katie must be. The train was late because the driver was late getting to work. Gah!

With only a few minutes to spare (not because of the train, but because I'm a lazy slob), I hauled myself over to parkrun, only to get a text just as I was parking up, to say that it had been cancelled. But I caught up with Elsie Too and Wine Legs, and we did the route anyway, along with a load of other runners. The path was a bit icy in places, but nothing too bad. It was quite cool seeing everybody trot round in their own little social groups. They should do it every week.

Then the usual post-parkrun trip to Fancy, for cake, meeting up with Silveshadow and Nightjar :-) The lady who owns the cake shop asked if we were the faster runners, as we'd gotten there much earlier than normal :-) Ironically (I think), we were earlier because we didn't attend the health and safety briefing for a run that was cancelled, but that we ran anyway. Bang. There goes my brain. Too many layers of complexity :-)

But the cake was awesome (chocolate malteser cake). The owner also told me that she did a Facebook vote on Friday to see what flavour she should make her Victoria sponge. I'm disappointed to say that the result was lemon curd, which (in my book) invalidates its cake credentials. If this happens again, I may be calling on you to vote en masse for the proper filling, which is strawberry jam.

And I've also discovered that you can give requests more weight when dealing with public bodies by adding the suffix "what with it being election year" :-)

So 98 miles for January then. 10, 12 and 14 for the long runs. Three tempo runs of 3, 3, 3.8. And some other running. I've made the most of cutback week, but we're back at it next week, and February goes: 16, 18, 20 :-O OMGels!

The boy got 'star of the week' at rugby today :-)

I had a thought about this week's vLog - I thought I could do a little Q&A (seen Iron Mum doing something similar on her blog, and it sounds like a good idea). So I'll try to tackle the first five questions in the comments below. No funny business :-)

Small sips

2:52pm, 30 Jan 2015
My beginners group started on week 2 this morning :-) We met up at the school gates, but the pavements were like glass, so we decamped to West Park so that we could run on the grass. They did great, again. It was [6x (90s run, 2min walk)] this week, and it was nice to see them all mixing it up, chatting in different formations as they ran. There are some new shoes and kit already! And we've even had the talk about targeting a 5k event together, which I'm taking as a big positive - and they're making lots of plans to meet up mid-week to do their homework runs :-)

But that wasn't the best bit of today! I've been following D2's blogs about her acrobatic attempts to rearrange her skeleton - and as she's not a million miles away from me, I offered to go and walk her lovely dog after finishing with my beginners! There's snow to the north, so as I zeroed in on the farm, I was seeing lots of beautiful fields, and simultaneously wondering how I'd get my crappy car up the very steep and windy farm track.

Luckily, some kind soul had gritted the tyre tracks, and despite a few slippery skids, I managed to get all the way to the gate. I've been once before, but it was almost unrecognisable under 6-10 inches of snow. D2 and Eb came to the door, with D2 on crutches, and Eb on crotches (hoof, paw, nose). I'd read about how Eb had taken on the role of protector after the fall, so I made a big fuss of her - and can confirm her status as a fully trained Medi-dog.

After a few hellos, and sticking my tracksuit trousers on the stove to warm through (they're the pair that live in the car at the moment, so not only were they cold, but they also had hot chocolate spillage all down one leg), D2 gave me a map, and pointed off into the distance, saying (approximately) "go that way, you can't get lost, Eb will look after you".

And so she did! I started off trying to run, and followed Eb as she trotted elegantly through the snow, on the basis that she probably knew the best path. But due to the driftiness of the snow (my boy will be very jealous when I collect him from school), and the hilliness of the terrain, it was more like wading, so we slowed to a walk. Eb led the way from start to finish, leading me in a big loop around the fields, up through a foresty bit, and to the bit with the best view, making sure she gave me plenty of time to get my breath back, and to fully appreciate what she'd shown me. There were a few interesting animal holes that we took a bit of a sniff at, and then it was back to our loop, stumbling back down the hill through the snow (which was surprisingly good to stand on, as it compacted into personalised steps). D2 said later that from her window at the farmhouse, it looked like difficult going, but that's more to do with my special descending style than anything else :-)

As we neared the farmhouse again, I called to Eb, but although she turned to check on me, there was no mistake that there was only one place she needed to go now, and that was back to see her mum :-)

I was made a nice cup of tea, whilst my trainers sat on top of the stove to warm up a bit, and Eb kept nudging me with her paw in that way that means "You there! Keep stroking!", whilst we had a chat about wood burners (want one!), and dogs that go sledging by themselves - but I'll leave that last story for D2 to tell. And on my way out, a tasty looking bottle of home-made damson vodka was pressed into my hand, which I'm planning to try out just as soon as I've done with my marathon (well, not *immediately*). Thank you D2 and Eb! Small sips!

LiRF, award shortlist, beginners, books, boy.

9:04pm, 29 Jan 2015
I've finally had the opportunity to write up my thoughts following the LiRF course a few Saturdays ago - you can read it here:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/cms-75

I hope it's useful, but if you've got any questions about it, feel free to ask. The temptation to do the next level is definitely there :-)

We've also been listed in the 'Running Awards' - and it's a voting thing - so if you feel like voting for Fetch, here's the link:

therunningawards.com

although there are plenty of other good running websites to choose from :-P

Week 2 with the beginners tomorrow (snow permitting), we're up to 90s run, 2 mins walk, for a total of 20 mins. Then I'll do a few more miles of my own, and then I'm off to see a lady about a dog :-) All of that will change if there's snow overnight though.

I finished Thomas Penman this morning - I really enjoyed it. Then I picked up Jonathan Livingston Seagull, imagining that I could probably squeeze it in before the end of the month, to bump up my book average. It's a thin book, but even so, I hadn't realised that half the pages were pictures of seagulls, nor how terrible it was going to be. Half an hour later I'd finished it (they all turned out to be ghosts), and I've moved onto Casino Royale, being my first ever Bond book. I like the opening paragraphs :-)

Right, it's time to go and put the boy's light out, and see how far he's got with Percy Jackson. We did fractions this evening, and there was a pleasing lack of effing and jeffing surrounding the whole process.

TTFN.

Dog Available :-)

5:13pm, 28 Jan 2015
Katie and me are going back to Club La Santa in June :-O Having been there once before, I am already pants-wettingly excited about going again :-)

Correspondingly, I'm wondering, is there anyone vaguely near Bedfordshire who would like to have a go of our dog for a week.

Here he is, looking adorable:

But don't let that fool you. He eats duck poo, he has no road sense, no bike sense, no common sense. He's a bit needy. And greedy. And Cheryl Tweedy.

He's a good runner though. He'll accompany you for up to five miles, after which he gets a bit bored, and wants to go home.

He's a lovely blanket, and is a fully-trained Medi-Dog, who will come and sit on you if he detects even the smallest malaise.

He has a comical face, and he will mostly let you play with his ears. Boy dogs wanna get with him :-)

385 days since last chewing-based accident.

384 days since last indoor vomit (he does at least 4 warning heaves).

He doesn't shed. He copes well with sleeping in the utility room (but not the shed).

If you're interested, give me a shout :-) No pressure, we always have a backup plan, but if you're up for fun, then Stephen could be its name :-)

  • We're in Sandy and could be another option (although Elsie Too clearly has first dibs!) We did have a black lab so are used to the poo eating and greediness. We're due to be acquiring a retired guide dog (also from Bedford) later in the year - although that's dependent on when its current owner/user gets a replacement dog - so we definitely have a canine vacancy. My younger daughter is already smitted with Stephen after she was watching one of your vlogs over my shoulder. How is he with chickens? We have a couple that free range in the garden (the labrador was terrified of them).

Cutback

5:43pm, 27 Jan 2015
Gosh.

I'm pretty tired after todays run.

Makes perfect sense really. This week is a cutback week, so it must mean that I'm about as fully loaded with training as my body can take. So a ten miler cutback long run as my first session of the week was always going to be tough. Add to that, the fact that I ran it without Katie. This means that I tend to go a bit faster, and as a result, I use up my energy a bit quicker. Take away a couple of stops (the first, to check where the hell I was; and the second for a quick chat with Lakes, who was walking through town on his lunch break), and most of my miles were between 9:00 and 9:20 pace. We've been doing our long runs at between 10:00 and 10:20 - so it's quite an adjustment.

But hey. That's half my miles for this week done. I would really not complain right now if it was bedtime.

11:32pm, 24 Jan 2015
It's been a busy day today.

Rugby for the boy at 10.30, which was all about tackling. The boy is getting there, a bit at a time. He looks pretty good when he's knocking down the crash pads, but still has a bit of reticence when cwching up to advancing players. But he seems to be having fun with it. It's a mixed class, and there's a girl who's probably about a foot shorter than the boy, but is already tackling like Dan Lydiate :-)

A quick trip home, via the shop to buy a couple of birthday cards, peel the boy out of his muddy stuff, give him beans and sausage on toast, and a shovel - and then he's off to a party for some friends of his. I dropped him off, and drove home, working out what sort of run and how many chocolate digestives I could fit in before pickup.

It ended up being a 0.4 mile warm up, then 3.84 miles at threshold up and back on the canal path. So that's 0.84 further than last week's tempo run, and the splits over the last three weeks now look like this:

Week 1 = 7:46, 7:38, 7:53 (average = 7:46)
Week 2 = 7:39, 7:38, 7:44 (average = 7:40)
Week 3 = 7:35, 7:31, 7:26, [7:26] (average = 7:30)

The HR splits weren't really comparable, because the watch took half a mile to get its shit together. It's pretty rare that it does that, to be fair. In the latter stages of the run it does look like my HR is a bit lower this week than last - so that's all good. I also think it's hard to make a direct comparison between this week's run, and the previous weeks, because they are on a different route. The first two miles were upstream on the canal, so on the way back I had that mental boost of a little altitude drop every so often. I think it's mainly a mental boost though, but I will try to find a way to harness that mentalness. I did come off it feeling pretty good, so I'm calling that a win :-)

Then it was back to get the boy, who was posing for a picture with a samurai sword when I got there :-O He got some nice comments from his teacher this week about his use of possessive apostrophes in sentences about pipe bombs :-O I'd made a bargain with him that if he did his homework (fractions) with no b*tching and moaning, we'd go to see The Hobbit at the pictures. Which he did (more or less), and so we did. With Aero Bubbles! And it was great! I don't think I've seen all of the previous Hobbit film, but I knew enough to get the general idea. We drove home with lots of talk that started with the phrase "Oh, and what about the bit where...". My only slight let-down was that I was sort of expecting some sort of higher evil to pop in at the end, to give it a bit of a twist... but it does lead very nicely into the LoTR trilogy, which (surprisingly) I now want to start reading. A long time ago, I made it to about p700/900 of the combined trilogy before losing the will to live, but if I tackle them as individual books instead, I may have a better chance.

And now we're here. My running group are all emailing each other about meeting up to do their homework, which has made me smile. And when I wake up tomorrow, there'll be no more sleeps until I see my wife, which makes me do a BIG smile.

  • I love reading Tolkien and have refused to watch the films. First read the Hobbit at about age 10, then LoTR at age 11 or 12. Have lost count how many times I've read them. My copy of Hobbit is looking decidedly worse for wear. I treated myself to the centenary box set of LoTR.

New Beginnings

2:27pm, 23 Jan 2015
First session with my beginners done :-)

They did *really* well - much better than I expected. I'm learning to pipe up in order to get a word in edgeways, as they like a chat :-)

The group are all mums and dads from my boy's school - the plan is to meet up just after school drop-off on Fridays, and go do our session. They have all the same concerns that I think we've all been through when starting off in running i.e. "will I be quick enough?", "will I be fit enough?", "what will I look like when I'm out running?". But they took the first session [(60s run, 90s walk)x8] and they swallowed it whole. There was one moment when I got sidetracked by the chat, and so we ended up resting for about 2 minutes, and then running for 90s - which brought about a noticeable change in the amount of chat :-) I even did some stretching with them at the end. *whispers* I never stretch! :-O

They're already talking about meeting up during the week to complete their homework (repeat the same session), and you'll be pleased to hear, there was talk of cake :-) Definite runners in the making!

It got me out for an unscheduled run too. After covering 1.45 miles in 20 mins with the group, I got home then popped out for a loping 2-3 just to get the most out of my kit :-)

The dog has been for his haircut. He will no longer have to jump to fit through the gap between the sofas - he can just walk through - that gives you an idea of how much he's had taken off :-) The pet shop people have invited us to a 'doodle dash' walk at Elvaston this weekend - looks crazy.

Just finished a little bit of writing for RW - it's all about GPS art. None of it ground-breaking - just filling a slot on one of the pages - but still fun to do, and I can pretend I am a srs jrnlst.

Thanks to everyone that's shared the beginners pages: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/beginners - and to answer HappyG's comment on the previous blog, yep, you can exit the programme now if you just popped in to test it out. If the system works, I think we can do something similar for specific race distances. Any thoughts?

Blah

11:12pm, 22 Jan 2015
Wow! We have 59 people signed up for our beginners programme, following my blog yesterday, and a couple of mentions on Facebook and Twitter. The figures are very flattering, particularly as 29 of them have recorded over 500 miles of running on Fetch ;-) but that still means that we have 30 unmileaged users signed up in a short space of time - which can only be a good thing.

It was our long run day today - 14 miles. We enjoyed exploring an unfamiliar route so much last week that we decided to go on another adventure this week. Katie was given the task of plotting it out, and this week we tackled the north east of Bedford, taking in Renhold, Wilsden and Ravensden. It was a hilly route, and I discovered that my calf has the potential to be a bit interesting when going downhill. It was pleasing to run the 12th mile feeling much stronger than we did last week as we stumbled home - it's amazing how quick your tolerance for longer runs builds up once you get into the teens I think. We tried the High5 chocolate powder drink - mixing it with milk. It was lush* (*not being paid to say that).

Tomorrow morning I start with my beginners! There are five of them, and we'll be doing the C25K. Bit excited, bit nervous, but at least I'm insured :-)

Fetch Beginners Programme

10:50am, 21 Jan 2015
Right then, so lets push this a little bit more :-)

One of the things I've been wanting to do for a while (and it ties in with the LiRF stuff that I've been doing, and the TGC campaign, and the amazing work that my lovely wife has been doing with her own beginners group) is to put together some tools that are designed specifically for beginners.

All the training tools on Fetch have grown with me, over the last ten years. But every now and then, I create a test user, and I try to look around the place from the perspective of a new user. And it can be intimidating. Particularly if you're not just a new Fetchie, but a new runner too.

Enter the beginners programme.

It uses the NHS Choices Couch To 5K programme at its core. The sessions start off gently - in the first week, there are eight minutes of running, sandwiched into a 25 minute training session. They build up over 9 weeks, with the ultimate goal being that the beginner can run for 30 minutes continuously. Good stuff.

I've built a simplified interface for the training log, so that beginners can just click a date, and enter time (in minutes), distance (in miles), with a space for notes. It feeds in to the regular training log, so that when our beginners graduate, they have a good chunk of data to look back on. There's also a simplified summary that shows them their total mileage, and the total minutes they've recorded.

There's a direct link into the 'Beginners' thread. I'd like this to be the most-watched thread on Fetch, so that when beginners pop in with questions or comments, we can show them the weight of support that we can offer. So please add this thread to your watch list: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/viewtopic.php?id=57060

You've probably also seen a box at the top of the page asking you for your tips for new runners (if you haven't seen it, it's likely that you have a different box open, like the Garmin one, or the Amazon one). When beginners are surfing their pages, they see random tips from Fetchies. The idea here is to pass on some of the experience that the rest of us have picked up, and in a friendly, down-to-earth way.

Beginners can scroll back and fore through the weeks, so if they're already at a particular level, or if they need to go back a bit, the options are there. I'm also adding a box to the top of the page to give them a quick way to get back to the beginners programme, if they wander around the site. And on 'graduating', they see some options pointing them at the Race Finder, the Club listings, and encouraging them to blog about their experiences.

Here's the link:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/beginners

do please have a look, and also please remember to follow the beginners thread.

Leave a comment on this blog with your thoughts. All being well, I'll start sharing it a bit more widely :-)

  • Loving the typically Fetch off-the-wall intro images and text going on here. The top banner inviting you back to the beginners programme when you wander off to other parts of the site might get a bit in your way after a while. Will there be a regular 'beginners' link?

  • ER - thanks - I like finding the images :-) I figure that maybe it'd be ok to have the strip at the top whilst you're a beginner (at running, and at Fetch), just to give noobs a bit of consistency wherever they are. There will be beginners banners and links in the normal menu, just as soon as I'm ready to start pushing it a bit more.

  • I bloody love it! Wish I'd had this when I started. I wonder how easy it is for beginners to know 'roughly how many miles' they've run though? I didn't have a clue when I started, just went by time. Might be worth giving them a few clues as to how to measure distance without a Garmin, eg an average for the run/walk mix they've input, or tips such as driving the route to measure it on odometer. Or failing all that, just make it optional. LOVE the style of the intro. Would be good to be able to click through and find exactly who those other 18 (or whatever) beginners are doing that week. I'd love to help with this any way I can, btw - I miss coaching beginners :-)

It was icy underfoot here and there. One runner came running in the opposite direction, and warned me of some icy patches up ahead. That seemed like a nice thoughtful thing to say, so I said it to all the runners that I passed. Hopefully only some of them thought I was a mentalist :-)

So the run. It went well. I wasn't aiming to beat last week's time, just to keep in the right sort of area. But the mile splits are kind of nice:

Week 1 = 7:46, 7:38, 7:53 (average = 7:46)
Week 2 = 7:39, 7:38, 7:44 (average = 7:40)

The HR bands improved a bit too. These are percentages of max HR, and also include the warm up mile.

Week 1 = 95-100% for 36.4% of the time, 90-95% for 54.7% of the time, and below that for 8.9% of the time.
Week 2 = 95-100% for 33.6% of the time, 90-95% for 42.8% of the time, and below that for 23.6% of the time.

So I managed to go slightly faster (16s over 3 miles), with a more relaxed heart rate. I think the lack of wind helped, but there was also the ice to contend with. I think I'll do one more 3 mile tempo, and then up the distance to 4 miles, but ease off the pace a little bit, to make sure I cope ok.

Four runs completed this week, and 25 miles, up from 16 last week. But because we're not always doing our long runs on a consistent day, we're paying less attention to weekly totals, and using the 'Weekly Run Mileage (Rolling)' graph on the Train home page. I have mine set up to work out an average seven day mileage based on the total miles that I've run in the last four weeks (74). It seems like a smoother way to measure increasing training load.

High: 9.0 degrees
Low: 1.9 degrees

Long day, short blog

10:25pm, 17 Jan 2015
Up at 6.20, to take Katie to the station for her course, then over to Bedford stadium for 9 to do my LiRF course. More detail on that tomorrow. Summary: aargh, I'm covered in bees!

Curry for tea, and a very long but pretty good movie called The Place Beyond The Pines. Some lovely cinematography, one of those compressed timeline movies, full of symmetry.

I also received 2 x LR44 batteries in the post, which makes me very happy, as I've got my minmax window thermometer working again. If I've got to go out in the cold, I like knowing exactly how cold :-)

As D2 would say:

(Lack of) Pump Action

4:30pm, 16 Jan 2015
Five miles today, was originally gonna be a tempo, but I didn't fancy it, so I just ran. It's progress I think. A few weeks ago I would probably have just stayed at home. I've rescheduled the tempo for Sunday. No excuses :-)

Today's work has been mainly about fighting the tyre-yard fire that is the feedback mountain. I brought the list down from about 55 to about 29, but I did cherry pick the easiest fruits.

The boy got two house points for his letter from Santa to the Head Elf. It mentions farting :-)

The central heating pump is screwed again. Fortunately the plumber lives a few doors away, and he's been good enough to pop in for a look (yesterday), and is due back any minute to replace the pump. The damn thing cost £90 I think, and it was only installed last December. He's hoping to persuade the merchants to give us a replacement, hopefully for nowt.

My LiRF course is tomorrow. Eep. How soon after the course do you get your card? I'm starting with my C25k group next Friday :-)

You have to get one of those first - mine has only recently arrived (did the course in September!) - then you send it to UKA - they say it can take 2-3 weeks. Not had mine yet - getting away with starting our group up this weekend as scheduled because my running buddy has a licence.

This week we were told that we need a new flow joint thingy. The boiler refuses to turn itself off unless we kill it from the isolating switch. It has also decided to heat the radiators even when we only have it on hot water setting. My plumber is has reliability issues too :-(

A thread to follow

9:28am, 15 Jan 2015
If you're a regular reader of my blog, you'll know that I'm putting together some pages designed to support beginners through their early running. It's based around the NHS Choices Couch to 5k programme, but it will also use the specific things that Fetch offers, like a cut-down version of the training log, and support and advice from fellow Fetchies.

So with that in mind, it'd be great if you could stick the following thread on your Watch List:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/forum__57060__beginners

When beginners ask questions, they'll be automatically posted on this thread - and if it has lots of followers, then it should mean that they get a response nice and quick.

Thanks :-)

This Boy Can

6:08pm, 14 Jan 2015
I've bought myself an album - it's called Tamer Animals, by a band called Other Lives. If you've never heard them before, check out this video. I can't believe how much I love this song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWMqgeIDJs8

I've just had a quick stab at making something that will pick 8 random checkpoints within a given leaderboard area, and find the quickest route between them all. Some of the results are quite mental. A bit like a cross between Russell Grant's wallpaper, and those inkblot pictures that are supposed to reveal whether you're a psychopath. It's not quite ready for you to see yet :-)

We did our 12 miler today, heading out to the west of Bedford, taking in the villages of Bromham, Oakley and Clapham.

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-log-view.php?id=10873148

It was lovely. We were a bit slower than when we did the 10, but neither of us particularly care about that. Last week my HR was above the 70% mark for about three-quarters of the time. This week it was under 70% for the majority - so hopefully the recovery should be a bit better too. The route included an unknown (to me) section, which made a massive difference to the run. And compartmentalising it into sections means that I don't look too far ahead. We've 14 to do next week, and it's Katie's turn to pick the route - with the same the principle in mind - throw in something new.

I'm a lucky boy - my contact at High5 has sent us a *mahooooosive* box of gels and recovery potions. We took some gels with us today, and they were pretty nice. I've always used 'Go' gels before, but I'm happily converted :-) I wolfed mine down at about 6 miles, but Katie held on to hers until 10 miles, treating it as an experiment in how well her stomach would handle the gel, rather than using it as fuel. All good. We also have various powders to make into drinks, some energy bars (they look like something you might put out for the birds to peck at, but they taste lovely and fruity), and what look like some fizzy tablets that you drop into water. I remember being fascinated by the Steradent tablets in my grandparents bathroom :-)

I've also been eating some lovely home made chicken soup, and shoving all manner of crap from the biscuit cupboard in my face. Properly tired now - it's hard work, this refuelling :-)

I'd be interested to know whether any of my lovely readers have seen the 'This Girl Can' campaign on TV/online. The basic idea is to encourage more women and girls into all sorts of sports, by illustrating (amongst other things) that you don't have to conform to some sort of idealised body type in order to get stuck in. It's one of the things I was introduced to when we went to parliament, and I'm pleased to say that we're one of the links in the 'running' section :-) I think *everybody* should be encouraged to feel ok about engaging in sport / exercise - so the stuff I'm building for beginners isn't designed to target any specific group - but if you happen to know any women or girls who might have some mental barriers to overcome, this would be a good link to point them at: thisgirlcan.co.uk

  • There was a debate on BBC Radio 2 this lunchtime about the This Girl Can campaign. the athlete (sorry I wasn't paying attention who, dropped in half way through) was all for it, but a prof from bath Uni was not so impressed. the use of the word 'girl' rather than woman was seen as patronizing and she believes the advert is too focused on body imaging and sexualizing women in sport, and that the music was aimed only at a young audience. I didn't see it myself, but then I run about; maybe I would feel differently if I was in a stage of being anxious about starting up exercise. Interesting to hear another viewpoint I guess...

Godzilla!

10:25pm, 12 Jan 2015
Today I've been back to working on the Beginners Portal, as I'm calling it. The idea is to create a simplified, slightly more hand-holdy method for new runners to make their way into running. I hope to be able to show it off soon, and then I'll be pestering you all to find friends and family members that we can process :-)

I've started reading 'The Amateurs'. After six weeks of Dickens, it's so refreshing to read something modern. Dickens is literary hill work :-)

Three miles today. Felt nice and short. Interesting little niggle above right knee. Only a minor though.

My nephew has been put forward to play district rugby :-) Another couple of years and he'll look like Godzilla! We're all very proud of him.

The Travelling Checkpoint Salesman

1:50pm, 11 Jan 2015
The TSP is a famous computer science problem. A salesman must choose the best route to visit all the cities in an area, minimising his mileage in the process. I remember studying it a little bit at university. It's of interest to me right now because of Fetch Checkpoints. Now that we have lots of them and (any day now) local leaderboards, it occurred to me that it would be great to automatically generate the shortest route between all local checkpoints. It would be different for each person based on their starting point, and on the checkpoints within range. You could look up your route, then go out to see how many points you could pick up.

I was pleased to discover that the Google Directions API has a built-in ability to provide solutions, given a set of waypoints. Expect geeky fun with that at some point in the future :-)

Acorn Antiques

11:22pm, 10 Jan 2015
According to a post I made on the Book Group thread, I started reading The Old Curiosity Shop on November 22nd, and I finished it today. That's 49 days of reading time. I read a quote recently that said that people read books for enjoyment, or for boasting. It was enjoyable *in places*, and Mr Dickens can certainly turn a very good phrase. I particularly liked:

"... this might have been a very comical thing to look at from a secure gallery, as a bull-fight is found to be a comfortable spectacle by those who are not in the arena, and a house on fire is better than a play to people who don’t live near it..."

I found lots of interesting nuggets like this as I worked my way through it, navigating all the people who turn out to be the pauper's rich grandfather, and the people who suddenly develop coughs that refuse to go away until suddenly they peg it on Christmas Day (sounds like Eastenders when you put it like that). And in unearthing the nuggets, I've found a ridiculously simple way of keeping note of them. Rather than having the wherewithal to write them all down, I just have some mini-PostIt notes next to me, and I stick one on the bit that I'd like to remember. I did say it was ridiculously simple, didn't I? So my copy of the book is now decorated with lots of little pink tabs.

Overall though, I wouldn't recommend it. I think I was expecting something a bit more like Acorn Antiques. I know it was originally written as a weekly serial, which might explain the meandering nature of the story - but certainly as a novel it was drowning in turgidness.

Not sure what to read next, but I need something light that I can just breeze through. I don't think I can handle The Mill On The Floss just now, sorry Columba!

We've had a lazy day today, except for the boy doing rugby. It was windy some more - to the extent that the gate between me and my neighbour has blown off its hinges. How can I work out which of us owns the gate? It's a bit of a pain, because the dog can run amok whenever he goes out for a wee now. At rugby, we saw seagulls trying to fly into the wind, and failing.

Regarding my blog from a few days ago about apps - the consensus seems to be (at least amongst the existing Fetchies - that was an interesting point) is that what's needed is a better way to access the site from a mobile device. Well, if you've been following my blog closely over the last year, you might recall that a lot of the under-the-hood work has been about preparing the site for a better mobile experience. I've been taking a modular approach to pages, so that I can serve up different elements, depending on whether the user is viewing the mobile site or the desktop one.

Spurred into action by the results of the poll, I've retired the old mobile site, and created a brand new mobile site, which is largely indistinguishable from the desktop site. Rather than starting with empty pages, and building up a structure, I'm going the opposite way - taking the existing content, and paring it back. I can hone the navigation and key pages, whilst still offering all the less-obvious features.

The mobile site is here: m.fetcheveryone.com (just 'm' instead of 'www'). As I've said, it's currently an identical copy of the normal site - but with a few small updates. The navigation at the top has had a very quick going-over with the razor, so that it takes up a lot less space. I know the icons need to be much larger in order to be proddable, and I will probably turn Home/Forum/Train/Race etc into a dropdown, or into a horizontal icon bar. I've also started butchering the main forum list page, and individual threads, stripping out some of the less critical stuff, and working on increasing font sizes and clickable areas. I'll keep chipping away at those, until I've got them the way I'd like, then I'll start on other popular pages.

Bearing Up

10:46pm, 9 Jan 2015
The car needed a new wheel bearing, but apart from that, it went through the MOT. The repair bill was £90, plus £54 for the MOT, but I did get a free cup of machine coffee out of it, so it wasn't all bad.

I had bold intentions of heading off to find new paths today, hence my enquiries of Pabsey yesterday - but we were late enough leaving for school that I was in so much of a rush that I couldn't find my contact lenses, and hadn't had the chance to go to the loo. So I abandoned the idea of running early, took the boy to school in a gimpish combination of running kit and civilian clothes, all thrown on just to get us out of the door. But I'm past caring about that. Dropped the car off, and caught the bus back to the house.

The call came through that the car was ready, so I ran to the garage (don't you just love being able to do that?), and threw in a little loop of West Park to end up with 6.6 miles. So there was no long run this week (our 10 was on Sunday), but I was pleased to finish the 6.6 strongly, being my third consecutive training day of this week. I won't get another chance now, so I get 16.4 miles for the week. Hardly setting the world on fire, but I'm happy with it. On Wednesday, we're doing 12 in one serving :-)

Nine days of no alcohol. Not doing too badly, although I wouldn't mind a glass tonight. It's been proper windy. There was a 'For Sale' sign macheting its way down the street earlier, and the roof sounds like it's bouncing up and down. We're on the sort of street where you regularly find smashed tiles on the pavement after weather like this.

Deleted Bridges and Dodgy Lasers

11:03pm, 8 Jan 2015
We braved the heavy rain this morning to get Katie's tempo run done. The weather was quite unpleasant, but somehow it stoicised us (what is the right word that means to engender stoicism?) to fight it. My legs felt it a little bit, early on, as they shook off the leftovers of my own tempo yesterday, but they came through admirably well :-) And Katie? Well, she nailed it, just like she always does - each mile slightly faster than the last, finishing strongly (albeit cursing the lack of beeping from the watch).

The car is going in for its MOT tomorrow. Despite being only six years old, it's a nervous occasion (it's a nervous wreck, haha) as it's had a recurring gearbox problem for the last year. I hope this means that statistically, the rest of the car is in great condition. I'm planning a little run when I drop it off, and aiming for a route I've not done before. It goes across the Trent in a couple of places, and I wasn't sure whether the bridges advertised on Google Maps still existed. I even tried looking on the Checkpoints map, to see if there was any evidence of people crossing at that point - but the evidence was inconclusive. Thankfully, I've checked with SPKoF (aka Pabsey), and he says that although it sometimes gets a bit waterlogged, I won't have to wade across the river :-)

Spent a tense hour trying to get the data off my boy's failing Xbox memory stick. It's every bit of progress in every game he's every played. It's a bit like losing your training log, and all your fitness along with it. Luckily it sparked into life one last time, and we copied the data quick sharp. Unfortunately though, we have another boy with another Xbox that looks like it's got a dodgy laser. Damnit. Any Xbox owners have any experience of getting them successfully repaired?

Healthy and Appy

11:55am, 7 Jan 2015
With absolutely *NO* promises about actually making something happen, I would really like to get some feedback for this poll:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/polls-view.php?id=4726

It's asking what the key feature of a Fetch app should be. Should it focus on being a simplified, browsable version of the website? Or is it more about having something that you can stick in your pocket when you go for a run, that will give you time/distance/etc, and feed it into your training log?

Of course, if you're interested in an app, I know you might say "both". But then I might have to poke you in the eye :-) If I've any chance of making this happen, then it'll be because I've broken it into more manageable chunks. Right now I'm trying to think about how I recreate the whole of Fetch - and frankly, I don't think that's healthy ;-)

  • The time distance thing would be good for competing with the likes of strava and would be more attractive to newbies who might never stick their heads into forums and blogs etc but who don't have a Garmin. I think if you're asking those of us who lounge around doing the social stuff or who upload straight from their Garmins then you'll get the second answer. You're kind of looking at two audiences. It would actually be handy to have a time and distance function for when your Garmin has gone flat, that's when I tend to use Strava.

  • Wow - I'm a bit surprised by the result so far. I'd say that the website works fine as it is on a mobile browser. Sure it's a bit hard to hit some of the buttons with my big fingers on a small screen but there are ways around that. I would like to see an app leverage the things that only a mobile can do while out and about; tracking using GPS or cell data for example. I don't mean to replace a watch but a periodic update of where people are in a race would be useful for support crews and make it more exciting to follow a race. Perhaps it could alert you when another Fetchie is about to pass you in a race, and automatically collect the sticker. Uploading of photos direct to the gallery is another thing it could do. The TomTom can upload run stats via their mobile app so I can look at my run almost immediately and I'd like to see that on a Fetch app too (obviously relies on the watch being able to connect directly to the mobile).

  • I think it's a nightmare on a mobile browser meself, drives me nuts. That'd be the key thing for me: forum, training log, blogs etc. But I DO agree with Nightjar re using the affordances of mobile - uploading pics to gallery is a brilliant idea. I wouldn't use it to log runs (Garmin all the way) but I'd love it if it it could link to the two geolocation-specific games, Fetchpoint and Conquercise, and maybe allow you to 'check in' at races.

Punch O'Clock!

6:27pm, 6 Jan 2015
If you've not seen it yet, go and take a look at the Fetch Stickerbook :-)

It's a way of recording the Fetchies that you've met in real life.

Some of the stickers have stars and jazzy backgrounds, if they've done cool stuff like run lots of miles, or posted loads on the forum.

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/stickers.php

If you're not a sticker yourself, just make sure you (a) visit the site reasonably regularly [as a logged in user], and (b) visit lots of pages. The list of stickers is rebuilt each night, so if you make enough of a nuisance of yourself, you'll be on it before you know it ;-)

In other news, I spent an hour standing in the TV shop whilst the manboy behind the desk did lots of incompetent stuff, like (a) dealing with customers who weren't me, (b) ringing the wrong people to get an authorisation code to approve the replacement telly, (c) cutting himself off whilst sitting in a ten minute queue to the right department, (d) wandering off. It was very close to punch o'clock.

Running has not got a look-in so far this week, which means that if I want to fit three runs in now, they're gonna have to be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday - not ideal, but not terrible. Please make sure I run tomorrow, Fetchworld.

I'm making good progress with my Machine Learning course though - at the moment it's covering algorithms that you can feed lots of examples to (and each example can have lots of parameters), and it'll basically generate a best fit model for that data. We've started off with linear regression, but now it's moved on to logistic regression. I'm looking forward to experimenting with the Fetch data :-)

The plan, then.

11:39am, 5 Jan 2015
Woke up this morning feeling a bit leaden, which is no surprise given that yesterday's run took quite a bit out of us.

I also got out of bed a few times in the night with some dream-inspired thinking that I was taking part in a surprise party. I'll spare you the details, except to say that it involved trying to find pants, and Katie telling me to climb back in and go to sleep.

Marathon then. It starts here, etc :-)

The long runs for January go a bit like this:

10 (done), 10 again, 12, 14, and then a 16 on the first day of February. We're building to a 20 in mid-February, and then two further 20's, including Oakley at the end of March. That's a fairly testing one, from what I've heard, so it should be a good marker.

I am also planning to work on my lactate threshold pace, on the basis that it will make everything slower feel much easier. My plan for January is to do a weekly threshold run - warm up for a mile, then run for 3 miles at about 10s/mile slower than my 10k pace, which means about 7:37/mile. In theory, I think this should also correspond to 85% of my WHR (working heart rate), which is around 165bpm. My plan (because it's unlikely I'll be able to reassess my pace during Jan or Feb) is to keep an eye on my heart rate during these runs, and if it's working to plan, I should see my heart rate coming down a bit for the same pace. In February, I will either inch the pace up, or add an extra mile, depending entirely on what I feel like doing :-)

Aside from those two elements, I will fit in at least one, but hopefully two other runs per week. There'll be no agenda for these - just using them for fun, or for knackering the dog. I'll be starting with my C25K group on Jan 23rd, so this might swallow up the time for one of those runs. The reason I'm aiming for 4/week in January is so that when the mileage goes up even further in February, I've got the opportunity to drop back down to 3 if it's too tiring.

We have some cutback weeks included, when the long runs start to get up to 16-18 and beyond.

And that's about the extent of my thinking so far.

  • For marathon training, most plans recommend lengthening the LT run from 3 miles up to 6 or 7 over a period of 4-6 weeks. Looks like a good plan. Do you have "tune up" races planned too? A half, a 10K and a 5K or other distances? Good way of gauging progress and good confidence boost too. Best of luck. :-) G

Ten mile toes

6:59pm, 4 Jan 2015
Ten miles done.

The first of our long runs for marathon training, and the smallest foothill in the mountain range we are about to climb. The last couple of miles were the most tortuous (although my HR was pleasingly solid). We last did a 10 on the 10th of December, so there's no surprise it was a bit tough really. Added to that it was cold enough for my shirt to have a white sheen of frost on it, and a bitey wind on the back 5, and you get the general idea.

Bit tired now :-) Legs are not too bad, toes feel a bit like they've been squished. My toenails are quite short at the moment. Normally they're long enough for me to administer the occasional accidental lethal strike under the duvet :-)

Now it gets serious. 2014 was about trundling and being consistent, now it's all about shaping the raw materials into something marathonable. Or something. More details on the plan tomorrow :-)

On Parliament

9:08pm, 3 Jan 2015
I realised the other day that I hadn't really done a blog about how things went in parliament back in December.

It was an exciting trip for sure - I've never even walked past the HoP, so the chance to go in for a nosey around was great. I still don't know how I managed to be on the guest list. The security had some interesting signs, telling us we weren't allowed to take anything suitable for causing agitation (not whisks, Mr Jigs) like flags, or banners. Luckily we'd left ours at home.

There's a lovely big hall called Westminster Hall, which had a choir singing at one end, so it felt a bit Hogwartsy - and it was quite chilly inside. Apparently Churchill and the Queen Mum, and the victims of the R1 airship disaster have all lain in state here.

Beyond the hall, a lovely sort of "middle room" separating the Commons and the Lords, with a very big ceiling, and very fancy floors.

Our big meeting was in the Thames Pavillion. There were what felt like about 80-100 guests, in a very small room - not really enough to move elbows. Just about everybody there was connected with running in some form. It felt a *bit* like some folks were clearly there to "work the room", and that's not something I've ever known how to do (nor do I particularly wish to learn) - so me and Katie stood and made big eyes at each other for a bit. We did chat to some nice people though, the highlight being my first chance to meet Marigold :-) Lovely man, and very patient as I asked him all the questions that everyone asks him when they know his back story. Good luck at Comrades Steve!

There were some speeches, talking about the importance of running - stuff we all know really - and it's all about making some connections between running organisations to help bring more people to running. I have had some useful chats, and the stuff I'm putting together to help beginners may well get publicised a bit, if things work out well.

It was all over pretty quickly really, and we were back on our way to the station.

The chair of the meeting was Alistair Burt, who (as he later announced to a room full of people) is also one of Katie's patients / clients. I shook his hand, and he asked me 'how I came to be at the meeting'. In retrospect, I can see that this was my cue to put forward all the reasons why Fetch is such a wonderful community, so supportive and inclusive of runners of every standard. But as I've said above, I've no idea how to work a room, and because I was still quite curious as to why I was on the guest list, I instead went with "no idea, I was hoping you could tell me!". He's clearly a very kind man, and recovered well with "Let me introduce you to David Moorcroft". "David", he said, "this is Katie, my physio, and this is... her Ian". That'll do :-)

Bold Claims, and a Challenge for 2015

6:33pm, 1 Jan 2015
Ey up,

just back from my first run of 2015 - a friendly 3-miler around the pond with Katie and the dog. I had a bit of a headache after three large glasses of red wine last night, but I'd emerged from the blur after a couple of miles.

2014 was a good running year - I managed 844 miles, which is my highest mileage for about 7 years. But more pleasingly, I avoided the boom-and-bust approach - with no major gaps in my training (the biggest being a seven day period at the end of November. There's a tool for this - here: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-analysis-consecutive.php ). Hopefully it's the best preparation to take with me into the next few months, as we build up to quote the unquote marathon.

I read 26.5 books in 2014 - you can see the full list here: pinterest.com - my favourite three (in no particular order) The Curious Incident..., The Second Coming, and To Kill a Mockingbird. I'm currently chugging my way through The Old Curiosity Shop, which has taken over a month. It's not all that inspiring - very long-winded, but I will stick with it. If you like reading, come and join the Fetch Book Group: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/viewtopic.php?id=56655&page=223

I can't blog about 2014 without mentioning the Blog-a-Day gang #fetchBAD - and the 15 people who managed to keep blogging every day throughout the year. Anyone attempting it for 2015? Despite most people's concerns about their own output being boring, it actually meant we got to learn a heck of a lot about the bloggers. I missed my first day in April I think, then struggled on until the start of the summer holidays - and then it all fell apart :-)

If you're up for something similar, but just a little bit different, try #fetchPAD... I'm giving it a go:
http://www.fetcheveryone.com/forum__57155__1__fetch_photo_a_day_challenge_2015_fetch_pad

I've got some more challenges for myself - so I'm writing them down here, for a bit of peer pressure.

I'm giving up alcohol until I've run London. I'm not concerned about the amount I drink, but I'd like to see what sort of a difference it makes.

I was going to put something about the online courses, maybe specifying a number I wanted to have completed - but I want those to be purely about my own *want*. So no pressure there, just a bit of exploring.

I will also be doing my LiRF course on 17th Jan at Bedford Stadium - and I've started advertising at my son's primary school for parents who want to be helped through the Couch to 5k programme. I have four interested parents so far, and we're starting on Jan 23rd :-) So that's another one of my goals - is to encourage as many beginners into running as I possibly can. I'll be looking after my group, and also putting together some functionality on Fetch that will be designed to look after beginners, and to help you all bring more beginners to running, and to Fetch. More info on that soon. I was hoping to get it all ready for New Year - but you know how it is :-) It's one reason why I'm a bit jealous of the bigger running brands - they always seem to have their co-ordinated New Year stuff all set up and ready to go. But I wouldn't swap. You'll just have to wait a bit :-)

I also want to finish the next chapter of the story I'm writing, somewhere within the first three months of 2015. If you're interested in reading chapter 1, here it is: facebook.com - all pestering and thoughts appreciated.

In running terms, January is quite simple - we want to be up to at least 14 miles long run by the end of the month. I need to put some thought into the speed stuff too.

There are some other little projects coming your way too. Checkpoint Leaderboards, the Fetch Stickerbook, and maybe even the long-overdue app ;-)

Other than that, I just want to look after my family - my lovely wife, my boy, my step-boys, and everyone around us. Lots to be grateful for in 2015!
