Draggable?

5:12pm, 28 Feb 2017
More route plotting updates...

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/routes-add.php

When you plot a route now, you'll see brand new little yellow plus symbols along the line. You can drag these in case you want to adjust part of the route midway through building it :-)

Oh, and I'm really not suggesting anyone is a minion (except perhaps me), but I saw this the other day, and it felt incredibly familiar :-)

  • Very cool. Couple points (there's always one, right?!) - if you drag, then the dragged point doesn't "follow roads". And Undo doesn't undo the dragged point, only the last added point. Or there could be a "delete point" option to delete the dragged point? Basically, like Google maps! Only better, cos it's Fetch?! :-) G

  • Really cool - but I've noticed what I'd count as a bug on the route editing. It seems that there are real time road closures information on route editing (which is cool for cars, but not so cool for runners) I plot a route, along a local road that is closed for roadworks for months - the A387 at Looe south of Sandplace (but open for runners as most roadworks are), and I have to plot the whole road manually... this is a real pain. Could this be changed please?

Route Plotter now with OpenStreetMap

1:22pm, 27 Feb 2017
If you take a look here:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/routes-add.php

you'll see a new button top-left, that says "Gmaps" (Google Maps). If you click that, it changes to OSM, which stands for Open Street Map - a fantastic community-driven mapping project that in many cases offers a richer experience that's not always available via Google Maps. Like Wikipedia, but for maps.

If you leave 'Follow Roads' switched on, then the lookup service is still Google - so it might not spot paths that are on Open Street Map. But if you switch Follow Roads off, then you can click your way along those undocumented paths. And you can flip back and fore as much as you like.

The other new feature to point you at is controlled by the distance button (to the left of 'Undo'). The units *should* default to whatever you've selected as your favourite units (miles or km), but if you click the distance button, it will switch to the opposite unit, and the distance markers will also update too.

OSM around me is showing a purple dashed line which generally follows the river but which happens to cross over my front garden as well - any ideas what this purple dashed line is and why it is in my garden? or should I ask this on OSM? Update to Route Plotter

11:09am, 23 Feb 2017
Here's the old route plotter:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/routes-add.php

and here's the new one I've been working on:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/routes-plot.php

I'll replace the old one when I'm pretty confident that I've ironed out any wrinkles.

Here's the side-by-side of the desktop view:

(Because both images were pretty wide to begin with, you might have to squint a bit)

The changes:

1) Big red box at the top has been squished down
2) All the buttons have been tidied up, and laid over the top of the map
3) The map is way bigger
4) Use the 'Save' button to pop up the save form.

This is just a tidy, rather than creating a great deal of new functionality - but I do have stuff in mind - particularly to do with using this as a route editing, rather than just a route creating tool. There's nothing worse than plotting 26.1 miles, and spotting a 0.1 that you could add in somewhere near the start. Unless you count running it :-)

Give the new version a try, and see if it's working well for you. If you're mobile, you should find the experience to be an improvement too.

  • It is definitely better than the old version on my phone. One issue that still causes problems is that if your 'click' is near a point on the map that pops up - like a tourist attraction or just a pub - the map assumes that is where you are wanting to go. This was causing big problems with my mapping in NYC last week - enlarging the scale sometimes helps but if you aren't careful the map can log a route to a random place if you don't move your fingers quickly! Having the undo button at the top is much better :)

Let me know what you think. It should work better on mobile. No new functionality yet, just a bit of a tidy up. Here's the old one, for comparison:

Obviously for the last month or so, I've been spending quite a bit of time thinking about how the site earns money - and it's been an enjoyable challenge. But at the back of my head, I'm always conscious of the virtuous circle that goes like this:

making the site better => more people using the site => easier to make money => more time to make the site better

So apart from taking an hour out to deliver some gin to a poorly Wine Legs :-) and a trip to the post office to post a shirt for Lady Sol, and a vest for Tat26.2, and a few hours this morning watching the Race Guide go out with its payload of race advertisements... apart from all that, I've been working on smartening up the route pages.

I spend a lot of time looking at the old and new version of a page side-by-side, to see whether what I'm doing feels like an improvement. Here's the mobile view of a route, with the new version on the left, old version on the right.

You can play 'spot the difference' if you're bored enough, and then see how many you got right :-) Here they are:

1) I ditched the little thumbnail image of the route. I had it in there originally because I thought it was necessary for making it pop up when you do a facebook share.
2) The 'Upload a picture' box no longer takes up half an inch of height - it's tidied away behind the 'Add Pic' button now.
3) Export to GPX was hidden down below the map. I've also dropped the TCX option, because since I added the GPX link in mid-Jan, people have pretty much stopped using the TCX option.
4) Likewise, the mess of facetwinterest links has been hidden behind a 'share' button.
5) There used to be a 'Duplicate' button, for making a copy of a route you already had in your list (so you could edit it, I think). It's been pressed five times in the last FIVE YEARS. So it's gone.
6) The 'Measure New Route' button is green now, as I think it's helpful to make it stand out.
7) The distance, ascent, descent etc were also hidden way down the page. Not any more.
8) All of this means the map is about an inch further up the screen on mobile. And so (because The Fetch Corporation NEEDS ENDLESS MARMITE), I've snuck another ad in underneath it.
9) About this route - no description supplied. Fascinating. No description = no box.
10) The elevation graph also gets boosted up by over an inch.

I'm not finished yet:
1) I want to link the map and the graph so you can get a visual on the hills
2) the page already has some richer functionality if you've assigned the route to entries in your training log - I need to figure out all of that, as it's been a long time since I wrote that bit.

3) The layout changes again if you've uploaded a pic. And don't get me started on the crappiness of my upload code :-)
4) Then I get into measuring routes, snipping polylines, dragging /inserting route changes, and there's a whole can of worms.

So this seemed like a nice place to pause.

  • I'm sure I've used the Duplicate button twice myself. It's an outrage that it's been removed, an OUTRAGE I say! ;-)
In all seriousness, I like it, a definite improvement :-)

  • Not sure if it's what you are working on, but if I try to manually plot a route on my phone, and make the map big enough to see the roads I'm planning running on, I lose the "undo" and "out and back" etc buttons, and find it hard to scroll the screen off the map and back to the "outer" bit without adding more points on the map that need undone. Is that just me?

BTW - I think you may pick up a few more members/site hits since RW have "upgraded" their website/forums. It's a mess over there............

Competition coming soon

1:57pm, 20 Feb 2017
Hello :-)

I'm talking to Bluffer's at the moment - they are giving us a set of books to give away in a competition on Fetch. They're not advertising, but I figure it'd be a bit of fun, and hey, everyone likes prizes.

So as it's books, I thought we might do a blogging competition. In the festive calendar, I asked you all to write a 'Bluffer's Guide To Running', which seemed to go down well - but obviously I need a new idea for this competition.

Over to you. What should people have to blog about, in order to get a chance to win the books; and how should we pick a winner?

Cheers m'dears :-)

  • Blog about the last book they read? As to picking a winner it has struck me that with the Christmas blogs some people really write from the heart but someone who blogged (for example) 'I am writing a blog entitled sprouts so I can be in the draw for a prize' (and I don't know if that actually happened) would also get into the draw. Maybe a certain number of comments would have to be reached to get into the draw?

  • Tricky :-O It's a very good prize. I happen to have reason to know this ;)
I like BBL's idea of people's chances of winning being increased by them putting in a bit of effort. At the same time, it seems contrary to the spirit of the site to reward someone just for being a good/prolific runner or for being a good/prolific writer. It would be better if everyone started with an equal chance. And presumably bringing new potential members into the site is important too.
World's Biggest Bluffer competition? Most imaginative lie about something that (never)happened to you on a run, maybe accompanied by a photo?

  • I second that idea about a proper blog. So rather than just 'running' what about very specific topic related to running or swimming or cycling. Bluffers guide to XC or goggles or pacing during club runs 😆 or when to pee defore a race. That sort of thing. Whatever the blogger chooses.

  • How about every entrant gets an entry (or maybe 10 entries?), and each comment or "suggest for highlight" their blog post generates gets them another entry, and each time they comment or suggest for highlight on someone else's post gets them another entry.
That way you are giving everyone a chance, but people get extra chances for interacting more.

Race Guide Ads

4:51pm, 15 Feb 2017
Today I've been working on the ad system for the Race Guide, which hits all good inboxes on Tuesday. All in all, things are going reasonably well - I've spent the last month having some interesting conversations with different people and organisations within the running community - and learning a lot as I go. Lots of you have set up direct debits - and even more of you have said that you will ;-) We had our first take-away of the year last night - so we must be feeling optimistic. Fish and chips from Nobby's :-) Awesome.

Anyway, here's what I've been working on. The guide lists all the events near your home location - so it makes sense to try to offer a bit of ad space that is targeted towards a specific location. So for example, if you've got an event in Bristol, your ad could be served up to 2000 runners who are within 20 miles of the event. And it doesn't have to be events - I imagine it would be useful for anyone wanting to target a local audience of runners, cyclists, swimmers etc. So coaches, physios, running clubs hoping to recruit members, that sort of thing. Here's where the ads will go:

I've built a tool which allows me to put a placename or postcode in, and will report back on the number of users within a certain radius of that location - so if you want to find out how many people there are in an area, it's easy. We have four Fetchies on the Isle of Man :-)

The Race Guide goes out to 18,000 Fetchies, and there's a good-sized audience across the UK. I've set the price at £75 per 1000 emails, which I think is a fair price. If you're someone who wants to promote an event, or to reach a local audience - or if you know someone who this might be useful for, leave me a comment :-) Or even if you don't :-)

Whilst I'm here - we're also plotting London Marathon Fetchpoint. If you're a runner who wants support, it's this group:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/groups-view.php?id=1252

And if you're joining us as a supporter, it's this group:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/groups-view.php?id=1253

I know it's early days, but get joined up. We've taken the plunge and got a hotel for the night before and the night after - so we'll be there at the crack of dawn to set up - and we'd love to see what Chandos is all about. I hear it's a bit messy :-)

Fetch Fixtures

9:17am, 7 Feb 2017
Starting next month, I'm aiming to pick out an event somewhere in the UK for a Fetch get-together. And as The Race Organiser have very kindly taken on one of our home page slots, it seems like the ideal start to pick the Draycote Water 10 - as it's one of theirs.

Katie and I did the autumn version of the DW10 - not through planning - we were giving Silvershadow a lift, as she was aiming for a time that would give her a Bedford Harriers club award... but rather than standing and watching, we ended up entering :-) We ran together, and enjoyed it - there's a picture of us somewhere running across the finish line holding hands :-)

It would be really good if we can get as many Fetchies there as possible. I'm not running, as I'll have my boy with me BUT that means that me and him will be setting up a Fetchpoint on the course, and will cheer as many Fetchies as we can spot. And we'll be heading to The Dun Cow after the run, for a bit of grub - and I think there are already plans for a dozen or so Fetchies to do that too.

Whatever else, if you can have a quick read of the page, and click through to have a look at The Race Organiser's website (they do over a hundred events across the UK), that'd be really good - thank you :-) Here's the page:

I am glad to see the idea is still going even if I don't think I'll make this one. Would like to get involved in one at some point though and happy to help/advise on pubs if the selected event is in my part of the world :-)
