The weekend was good. I was timekeeper to Katie's Run Director at parkrun on Saturday morning - and our pre-run walk around the course yielded its first ever evidence of its usefulness. First, there was a sh*tload of smashed glass on the path (which one rather nice muggle was sweeping up), and secondly, another part of the path had caved in a bit, presumably as a result of the lorry that delivered Tom Jones his rider of red M&M's at last week's concert in the park. It wasn't exactly the San Andreas fault, but enough that we had to move our cones around a bit.
Post-run was coffee and cake (back on the Viccy sponge, nom) with the usual gang, plus travelling fetchie DocMoye, and back home for a lazy Saturday afternoon. Dog walking, bitching about pointless sports commentary, and hanging out with my Good Friend And Training Partner (#GFATP) Katie
Pizza for tea, a couple of pints at the pub with the neighbours, followed by a giggly wander to the cinema for a massive hot dog and Star Trek. Possibly the most unhealthy day of eating I've had in quite a while - but blimey it was nice

My throat was a bit acidy after all the pizza, lager and hot dogs - but we had a nice run around our local river loop, and invented a new game to be played with a #GFATP. Take it in turns to say 'Good Morning' to people, and score a point if they respond. Katie won, and got two bonus stars for getting people in boats to respond.
More O***pics, more tutting at the coverage, and then we were off to Sports Direct to buy some swimming caps for my first (K's second) open water swim, at Box End Lake. She came back with a buzz after her first trip, and convinced me to give it a try.
I also have a new Suunto Spartan Ultra to try out. By all accounts they are just under £600, but I have this one for a few weeks, on the proviso that I share my thoughts. It has a very James Bond-y feel to it - it's all brushed chrome, and feels very solid. It's got a colour screen, and so far, it seems fairly easy to use - although for £600, it'd have to go some in order to feel worthy of the price tag. Our local water sports place does regular swim sessions throughout the summer months, on a strip of lake that's about 600-700 yards long, and not too wide - so in the worst case, I could choke my way over to the reeds and stumble out, never to return. The other choice was whether to hire a wetsuit, or just to wear my tri suit. The weather was about as warm as you'd wish for, so I decided to brave it. I guess there were 20-30 swimmers, and most were in wetsuits, but I was pleased that I wasn't the only one under-dressed.
After the clinical edges of swimming pools, and being someone who occasionally needs a shove to accept mud, it was a bit weird picking my way along the slimey astroturf entry point in the shallows, and paddling out into a shock of cold water. But I had Katie and Silvershadow for company - reassuring blue-hatted lady-buoys bobbing along just in front - and the shock and cold subsided as I started to front crawl.
SS has been telling us about how peaceful it can be to swim in the lake - and I got a flavour of that (along with a flavour of lake water, which tastes impressively neutral, all things considered) as I tried to think about nothing but my arms as they made arcs over my head, and the blue sky above. I thought about how I would get the direction right if I was in a race - there'd be plenty of people ahead to follow
The underwater weed is a new experience. It feels like someone has torn up a load of string bags, and is gently tickling your undersides with them. It's tempting to recall all those movies (and real-life stuff) where people get tangled up, and I was pleased that I was fairly chilled out about that, and didn't think about crocodiles, shark-o-ducks or German u-boats once! I did get a bit of a feeling of ice-cream head, which wasn't pleasant, but otherwise I was delighted at staying relaxed out of my depth.
Not having a wetsuit was a clear disadvantage in terms of how much effort I had to put in. Katie told me afterwards that they'd had about 20 float-breaks to give me time to catch up - so I must try with a suit next time, to see if the added buoyancy and shiny coating will help make it easier.
45 minutes, and about 0.8 miles later (further than I've ever done in the pool), I chugged back to land, to discover that my legs were far less capable at walking than when I began - is this what they mean by sea legs? Possibly they were a bit numb, having mainly trailed along after me, having assumed their work for the day was done after the long run. So it took a few very wobbly steps to find my balance, and another few minutes before I found the right button combo to stop the watch.

If I can add 50% on to that swim, 0.7 miles on to my current long run, I've just got to find a 56 mile bike ride from somewhere, and I'm half an ironman. The rusty half. I think I must have been more knackered than I imagined - my brain was feeling a bit fuzzled by the time we got home. Fortunately, Katie plonked a plate of dinner in front of me with the most wonderful timing - it was just what I needed. She's awesome like that.

This afternoon I've been testing the code I've written to build exclusion zones on the Fetchpoint map. In this pic, I've reported all the markers that appear in the local lake (southeast of the central point on the map), and then thrown twenty thousand markers at the map. After much swearing, and pouring some Prodigy into my ears, I've got it working - the lake stays clear. As an aside, twenty thousand markers is enough to make my browser crash and stop the actual map from loading in the background
Previously, markers were created entirely at random - but to simplify this process, they now snap to a grid. Within a home circle, there are approximately 1200 positions where markers can go.
I have several years of data on 'reported' markers, and I'll be using this to give you a head start when it comes to clearing those inaccessible areas on your maps. So for all of you who got frustrated at reporting all those inaccessible markers - your time is coming

NB Rather than writing gazillions of points everywhere, I've used "1P" to represent "1 Point". In reality, I might make "1 Point" be 1000 points, but the key thing here is the relative amounts awarded for each action.
In general, I've simplified the rules a bit, but also added a little bit more spice here and there. Fewer markers (plus I'm working on methods for improving their accessibility).

A couple of suggestions. Can the different value money markers be visually differentiated? (e.g. diff colours, icons (big cats?! :-))). I really don't like big value randoms as they throw the scoring out of kilter. My preference would be to get rid. I quite like the idea of a negative money marker (maybe just -1P - don't want to be too mean), which if coupled up with a visual differentiator would act a bit like a rent marker as something to be avoided (black coin or skull or some such?).11:13am, 12th Aug 2016 -

My concern with cake shops was more to do with the possibility of (let's not say cheating but) creative play! Is there a time limit on ownership of rent markers? - it might be necessary to make them like flowers and they pack in after a few weeks of ownership, but it'll be an interesting experiment to see what happens if they're owned for as long as you can keep visiting them (I can see people cancelling holidays to preserve their rent marker collection!)Waveydavey

1p for collectables seems like a lot. In my village that's 4p within 150 metres, then nothing for 4 miles. In a nearby town you could get 10p within about 500 metres. This seems too much like it's encouraging us to go down the same route to get the big rewards (and the sort of places it encourages us to visit, like town centres, aren't necessarily the best for running). Perhaps either 0.1p per collectable, or only allowing each collectable to give 1p if not claimed in last week (like with flowers) would make them less of a chore.DaveG

I can't see any real big differences. The biggest issue from where I sit is regular cycle commuters who pick up all their points from flowers. Changing the watering to every 7 days will only impact them for a few weeks, but once the initial period is over, they will be the same, so plant a flower, water it over 6 weeks until it reaches the peak points and then harvest it.philip_m_jones

Next time you go have a go on the Aquapark, whilst it's still there - fab fun and great upper body workout
My first OWS experience ended with me surfacing face to face with a swan. It didn't quite put me off (although my inability to do front crawl pretty much did).
I'm hoping to try Bedford pr this coming weekend
