Five days on...

10:34am, 20 Jun 2016
and I'm wondering how you're all getting on with the new layout. It's extremely useful to receive feedback - and even moreso the kind that points out a specific issue - so that I can see exactly where you're struggling. Leave your comments below - I'll be bug-fixing and prodding layouts all day, or send me some feedback.

Fleecy made a good point last week - so as a result, I've now created three polls, one for each broad class of device. Now you can focus your like/dislike more accurately :-)

Desktop/Laptop users:

Tablet users:

Mobile users:

Thanks :-)

  • I am getting used to the changes but I don't like the layout of the new blog page. I liked the old tiled style as it was easy on the eye. Too much scrolling required with the new layout and less attractive layout.

  • I don't think the following was caused by the layout changes, but something I've been meaning to ask :-
On the Glasses View of a training entry, the Elevation graph and the Cadence graph have no vertical scale, is that meant to be like that, or been missed out ? The Pace graph above them does have a vertical scale. A graph without a scale is not very meaningful.

  • Gus - if you tap or mouseover, you should get a little popup showing the numbers. Now that they are separate graphs, it's much easier for me to add a scale to them - but I hope you'll excuse me if I hold that thought whilst I concentrate on the update :-)

Seratonin - for less scrolling, you could try switching the avatars off? I might look at reintroducing the three-column layout, but not in the very short-term.

  • Ah yes, not a problem :-)
Have you just changed something on the Training Log view in last 20 mins ? The first 2 columns, ie Twitter/View/Edit/Scales symbols, and Date are now spread over 4 lines rather than 1. Laptop, Windows 10 and Chrome

  • A lot of the lists seem to be on double spacing now so lots of scrolling down.
On the whole league list (on my laptop) my name is no longer high-lighted.
I prefer the tiles on the blog page too.

  • One change that I'd like to see - on my mobile (Android) there is the black header with Fetcheveryone logo and the three-bar menu icon, and below that is a red header with whatever sub-section I'm currently on (i.e. Blogs) and the triangle for the drop down menu. On that red header, could the word 'Blogs' or 'Forum' or 'Games' etc. be made into a clickable link?
Currently if you read through a few pages of a thread, or read a blog, you have to go into a menu to get back to the main forum page or blog page etc. It's not a massive problem, but a bit annoying.

  • I made a good point?!

It's absolutely fine now on my MacBook and on my terrible uni desktop, and I'm adapting to it finally on my iPhone, but I do agree about the scrolling on the blogs pages, you used to be able to get a snapshot of ones you hadn't read etc but now you have to scroll for ages to go beyond the highlights. I'm sure you can come up with a clever solution :)

  • Oh, one thing I thought of:
In the menu the forum and training etc are near the top, but blogs are wayyyyy down the list underneath stuff I NEVER use like injury and god knows what. It would probably make sense to have the menu in order of the popularity of the items in it, wouldn't it? So put training up the top as that's what most people use, then forums then whatever items are the next most visited etc.

  • some more thoughts.... Edit training entry page / mac / safari

It's all very blocky with a lot of unnecessary white space, but most confusing is that it's not possible to tell what the various elements are. Dropdowns and text boxes look the same, buttons look like headers (same here on blog page actually with the submit 'button') i.e. just a block of colour with no clue to it's function, no shadow, mouse-over, etc.

Some (but not nearly an exhaustive list of) things:

The 'Month Navigator' on your training log. If it's getting in the way, click the words 'Month Navigator', and it'll collapse in on itself. It doesn't remember that for next time, but it's handy all the same.

Blogs - a very long list. If the avatars are annoying you, look for the link that says 'switch avatars off'. This one *is* sticky.

"I have an enormous screen, and there's a load of white space around the outside": I haven't really optimised for screens that are *bigger* than the standard site used to be - it's been more about making it squish down nicely for smaller screens.

Inconsistent text sizes across the site. Yeah, hands up, it's a bit all over the place. One of these days I'll have a style guide, that all pages will adhere to. But in the mean time, if you have any specific annoyances, let me know. And don't forget that you need to tell me what type of device you're browsing on, so I can fix you good.

Wrapping nicknames on forum posts. Ok, I'm still stuck for a good solution here. I can force the column wider, so we get less wrapping - but what if there's a thread that only people with tiny names post on? Do we have a lot of unused space? If it defaults to the width of the widest name, then how do you feel about that column being a different width on every page you view. What's the best thing here?

The colours for my skin aren't right: it might be that (a) I haven't gotten around to updating that skin yet, or (b) your browser has an old version of the colour scheme cached. Try refreshing to rule out (b). If you're seeing a difficult colour combination, please let me know which skin you're using.

That Leftfield album isn't all that: it's pretty good I reckon. Nothing will ever beat Leftism though.

Weird word wrapping: seems to be happening on forum posts for Firefox and IE11. Haven't worked out a solution yet.

I can't see training comments on my phone: there was never gonna be a straightforward choice on what to include. Click a training entry to view it in detail, and you should see the comments.

Vertical numbers on your 'Watch List' list: these should be mended mostly now.

The home page 'Route of the Day' pic: yeah, perhaps I'll play with some different ways of cropping it for phones. Maybe there'll be an ideal aspect ratio. I'll come back to that - but you can also try going landscape for a broader view.

It looks like a really old version: old versions are, by definition, always better than the new changes. So that's fine :-) Thanks Sharkie!

The mobile menus hide stuff: I'm not sure I can see that. Pre-change, although the menus were all laid out unhidden, you had to pinch and swish and flick to see stuff big enough to click. The menu and sub-menu button require a click, but it's in a consistent place that presents the data quickly without a trip to the server.

I can't see the columns I want on my training log: the mobile version is simplified right down, but if you're viewing on a desktop, you should see a dropdown allowing you to choose which set of additional columns you'd like to see in your training log.

Sub-menus going behind the advert: I think I've fixed that now. Refresh.

Dancing blog box when the system backs up your blog - that should be working better now.

Page XYZ looks like it hasn't been updated yet: examples include the MOTM nominees, UTMOST, and about 430 others that comprise about 4% of the site traffic. I am working on these, starting with the ones that get the most traffic, and working downwards.

---

Tune in tomorrow for some more fine tunin' :-)

In landscape on iPhone 6 I really like having the log and calendar view side by side (please keep that!!) but the calendar is a little squished as well as going outside the edge of the page - but the training log columns have some unnecessary space, especially the bin which has a huge column. Otherwise looking much better, thanks for the ad banner fix! The font size on the top menu in landscape is way too big but I guess this is part of your ongoing styles work. A quick thank you...

7:50am, 16 Jun 2016
to everyone who has commented on the new site design. As yesterday's poll shows (http://www.fetcheveryone.com/polls-view.php?id=5432), the majority of you don't like it, which is never great news - but I always knew it was going to be an uncomfortable change. But hopefully, as you can see from the comments and my responses on my blogs below, I am listening to feedback, and (now that we've made the transition to pages that change based on screen size), I can fine tune layouts and font sizes until we get something that works best for as many people as possible.

Some of the issues may be down to bugs, or issues with particular browsers / devices that I've not yet been able to test and rectify - so that's why it's really important for you to say if things look badly wrong. And it's also really helpful if you can give me enough information to replicate the problem, so I can see what you're referring to.

Example of bad bug report: "Aaaargh, what have you fripping done to my data".

Example of good bug report: "I'm looking at this URL, using my Samsung Nerdwobbler, and the age-grading column in the table is not showing up. I've posted a screenshot in the gallery".

Thanks folks - I am listening.

Using Windows 7 on a PC
I'm still seeing blogs a a long list, is this how it is going to stay?
Also, on the forum pages, the previous pages bar is still very spaced out and the comments box very big.
In general there seems to be a lot of blank white space everywhere and the fonts seems a bit odd - sort of small and fine, a bit word processory?

Actually, this morning on the PC it looks pretty good so I think the tinkering is paying off.

My main issue with the changes relates to the mobile view. I avoided the mobile version of the site when you set that up and continued to view the full site on my mobile (Windows Phone). However now, because you have gone to the responsive design I am, I think, forced to go with that view. That wouldn't be so bad I suppose but I don't think it looks as good as the 'full' site.

For instance - on the full site, the Route Pic of the Day has been expanded across the screen - that looks lovely! (I'm not just saying that because it's my pic today.) On the mobile one, it's trimmed at each side. Even holding the phone in landscape format leaves bits cut off. You can't 'pinch' it smaller to fit either, though you can zoom in.

  • I agree strongly with McG's comments above. The site appears most like the old version on my Ipad. On my Windows10 laptop is it spare and the colour scheme different (Nigeria is distinctly lacking in green) and on my Android phone in Chrome browser it is like the mobile site when I want to see the desktop version. One of the things I love about Fetch is that almost everything was visible and accessible from one-click on one screen, even on my phone. I think having everything in hidden drop-down menus reduces the user-friendliness of the site, and new users will miss a lot of the functionality that is there. Even as an experienced user I am using less of the site than I did before - there simply isn't the same level of cohesive, addictive, connectedness that keeps me on here far too much of the time.

Hold on, what am I saying, these changes are great!

To help me deal with any issues relating to the site update, which I'm guessing you've seen by now, could you please either leave a comment on this blog, or send me some feedback. And for my sanity, could you please include:

1) the page you're looking at
2) the device you're browsing on (desktop, tablet, mobile; which browser, version etc)
3) what the problem is.

When viewing a page, you might also get some benefit from doing a refresh, as some bits of the update may still be settling into place.

  • I've just used my android phone for the first time since the changes (desktop version on Chrome) and I don't like it at all. No avatars on threads, no last post by in thread list. Lots of drop down menus to navigate anywhere, I much prefer just being able to touch the menu buttons. That seems much more intuitive and slicker. Sorry to be change-phobic

  • Another couple of very minor ones :-
On Conquercise pages there is a common banner across the top with 3 red boxes : Explored, Annual, Owned. The Explored one is not wide enough and the word is being split and wrapped onto new line.
On the Training League pages your own entry used to be highlighted in red ( all others in white ), no longer happening. May be a design decision ?

  • I'm using Firefox on Windows 10 home Desktop, using the default Fetch skin -

    Blog page -

I don't like the long list of blogs. I can see only the 1st 3 or 4 then have to scroll down a long way to see earlier blogs. The grid display was much easier to see who had written a blog. Is the time of posting really required?

    "Add Training" page -

Far too much white space which is a huge waste of screen causing unnecessary scrolling.

In the "Activity" box, the activity takes up only a 1/4 - 1/3rd of the box, a waste of space.
On the "Duration" (time) line, the boxes are too spread apart to see the time all in one look. They are now so far apart that the eyes can't focus on them all in one go, so one has to look first at "hh" then "mm" and finally "ss".
In "Route and distance" there are several large data boxes to hold just a couple of characters. Make the boxes smaller and the distance and ascent/descent boxes can go on the same line, the same with "road" & "flat", which means that only 3 lines instead of 5 are used. In the "Kit list" the last 4 columns are too scrunched up forcing words and 3-digit numbers to take several lines which is very odd and difficult to look at.
The "notes" box is now too narrow, so that when I import a Garmin run, the data for each mile spills over and now take up 2 lines instead of one, making it difficult to pick out information.

I haven't tried every other page, but most of those I have looked at seem alright.

Poised

12:27pm, 15 Jun 2016
You're gonna have to excuse me if I'm a bit quiet over the next 55 minutes. I just put iTunes on, and stuck on Leftism, which is one of my favourite albums - and then for reasons unknown, I opened a browser and googled Leftfield, to see what they've been up to since their second and last album, Rhythm and Stealth, which was 17 YEARS AGO. And it turns out that that they released a new album SEVEN DAYS AGO. I am now wearing MASSIVE HEADPHONES, and grinning like a tool :-)

EDIT:

That's not the blog that goes with the title. I am poised to upload the responsive design update to the live server, which is just a little bit scary, because it's quite a huge update.

In theory, if you use the site on a desktop, things won't change a huge amount - just a little bit of wiggling around, and some of the writing and form fields will have changed size (mostly looking a bit bigger). Some of the pages will look a bit different, but I've tried really hard to avoid making any changes that affect how things work - it's more to do with layout.

But if you use a mobile (and to a lesser extent, a tablet) to browse the site, you'll notice quite a big difference. The main drive behind the updates is to make the site adapt to whatever device you're using - so if you have a small screen, the pages are simplified so you can get to the key information easily, and without too much need for zooming in and out.

As well as individual pages, the header (and less noticeably, the footer) has also had a makeover. The 'Add Training', 'Do Stuff Quickly','Fmail' etc all get squished down into icons; and the Home, Forum, Train, Race line all compacts into what we in the trade call a "burger menu" - three horizontal lines that you can paw at to reveal the main menu options. And when you're in a section, like 'Train', the sub-menu options (Who's Training, Your Plan, Your Log, Add Training etc) are all available in a second drop-down. It might take a bit of getting used to - but it will hopefully be the beginning of a much nicer mobile experience, with way more functionality than you currently get in our existing mobile site. Which by the way, I pretty much never update, because I have to remember to replicate any changes I make to the main site. With the new approach, it's built in, because there's only one set of pages.

Like I said, the approach I've taken is to make minimal functional changes, just adapting the pages so that they squish down nicely when the screen is smaller. It's not something that I can do one page at a time, so I looked at the server stats for a whole month, and worked out which were the most popular pages, and worked my way down that list. There were 550 unique page templates on the list (every page of every thread in the forum comes from the same template, so they're just one of that 550). By converting 88 page templates, I've covered 96% of what you all look at - and I'll keep chipping away at the rest.

I felt that 88 updates was probably enough to do all in one go - so now it's time to get them uploaded, but I need a clear bit of time AFTER that to deal with any problems. So I might go with it once the lunchbreak Fetchies have gone back to work, in the hope that the hours before teatime will be enough to get it singing :-)

This might be a bit of an uncomfortable hump to get over, but once I get this live, I can really start to fine tune the main pages, based on your feedback, and on live data, which is always better and more diverse than anything I can test with.

Loving the album so far :-)

Run Bedford 10k

It's always a lot easier to write a positive blog about a race when you get a nice PB - and so this one might be skewed by the outcome, which I am over the moon about:

About a month ago, I approached the organiser of our local race, and asked whether or not we could have a couple of race places, in exchange for a mention in our newsletter, and if I wrote a review of the race. Imagine the scandal if I wrote a glowing review of the race, and it didn't come out until later that I was racing for free :-)

Glowing? Well yes :-)

The race is about 250 metres (as the crow walks) from our front door, which would work in most races' favour, I'm sure. It meant that we were able to leave the house just 15 minutes before the start, and caught up with some friendly faces as we all milled around the starting area.

The start and finish of the race is on The Embankment - one of Bedford's showpiece locations, a pretty tree-lined stretch of river, linking the 200 year-old Town Bridge and Swan Hotel (where we got married) to the slightly less auspicious McDonalds, Cineworld and Mecca Bingo. Until very recently, thanks to the addition of average speed cameras, it was also the favoured location for the local boy racers to do their tw*t-laps. But yesterday, it was ours alone - and it was a real treat to be able to run along the centre of the road.

Last year's inaugural event saw 429 finishers, but the ambition of the organisers is clear, with over 800 entrants this year. I often hear people talking about the cost of entering road races - and this one would have been £18 as an affiliated runner - but I also heard that the cost of the traffic management was around £7,500, or about half the money raised from entries. This also allowed them to have a generous cut-off, with a sweep vehicle moving at 10mins/km. They also re-opened entries in race week, with some messages coming out that the later entrants might not get medals, which was a bit confusing - particularly imagining how busy it often is at post-race medal collection time.

The race started within a couple of minutes of the advertised 9am - and I set off with the goal of trying to get a few miles at 7:21/mile, to put me on par with my 10k PB from Stanwick at the end of March. But you know how it is in that first half a mile - and on home turf too :-)

1) 1m - 7:09(7:09/m) 151/166bpm

So one mile in, and I'm running at a pace that I really struggled with on my Tuesday run. Admittedly that was in the wind and rain, but as test drives go, it was pretty demoralising. But here I was, off to a fast start, wondering how long I could keep a grip of the rope. A pancake flat mile with two 90 degree turns.

2) 1m - 7:08(7:08/m) 167/171bpm

Mile two goes along what is normally the busiest and fastest road - so once again it was a treat to be traffic free. My mother-in-law was at the 3km mark, which is just by our house, so I managed to spend most of this mile looking forward to grinning at whoever had come out to watch. Just my mother-in-law :-) Thank you!

3) 1m - 7:08(7:08/m) 170/173bpm

Mile three feels like it goes on a bit - there are no turns, just a big old arc with a water station in the middle; and towards the end, the little bit of breeze got in my face, and made things just that little bit harder - but I was still managing to hold on to the pace. The mathematics start - I've made up 38 seconds on my PB, so I could fade quite a bit here, and still do ok. Good news!

4) 1m - 7:21(7:21/m) 173/176bpm

I went through the 5k point in 22:11 according to my watch, which was pretty exciting - but I didn't have much time to enjoy it, as mile four takes in the only hilly bit of the course. It's made much more entertaining because there's a switch back - you go up the hill, down the other side, turn around a traffic island and then come all the way back.I arrived just in time to see the lead bike completing the manoeuvre and disappearing off around the corner. I got the chance to shout at a few of the runners I knew - I'd like to think this helped me get over the awkward bump, but it could equally have slowed me down. It was nice to see who was just in front of me - and who was just behind me. And it was lovely to see Katie, who was running really well. This was my slowest mile, but it was also a fabulous checkpoint to have completed, and I knew that the rest of the course would be a bit more generous.

5) 1m - 7:07(7:07/m) 174/176bpm

The first part of mile five is the final downhill of the manoeuvre mentioned above - so it's a good flying start when things are starting to tire. My overall pace had suffered a bit because of the hill, but I kept my spirits up knowing that we were about to turn left onto the gentle downward swoop of De Parys avenue, and somehow managed to turn in a faster mile than any of the previous four. I caught a very spitty lady, and another that I recognise from parkrun, and the gentle downhill helped keep up the momentum. This is so on!

6) 1m - 6:59(6:59/m) 175/178bpm

This might make me a bit weird, but I like running down the high street, even when it's busy. I think I can pretend I'm Shane Williams, as I dodge around all the muggles. But thanks to the road closures, there was no jinking required, and I kept pushing, round past the Swan Hotel, and back onto the Embankment...

It's a funny thing, but the Embankment always seems to shrink when you're not on it, but the stretch between our house and the town is about a mile long - and it can sometimes seem like it goes on forever, if you're coming in that way after a long run. Luckily for me, I was in an unspoken group of runners, and we somehow managed to pick up the pace, as the finish loomed out of the distance, and the crowds got a little bit more vocal.

7) 0.2m - 1:16(6:25/m) 179/182bpm
I tried hard to push myself to go past parkrun lady, but she seemed to have a bit of an extra gear. But I could see the clock, and it was saying 43 something, and so I didn't really mind what anyone else did - it was gonna be a good day for me. All my gurns came out, as I chucked everything at it, and the finish came - not in desperation, but with a shock and disbelief that left me checking the distance on my watch, and on every other watch - all of which back it up - I've just taken 1min40 off my 10k PB :-) :-) :-)

I was so delighted! I got myself a banana, and picked up a medal, although I returned the latter when I heard that Katie didn't take one, as she'd heard that they might run out. I don't know whether they did or not, but I hope that's something they can sort out for next year - although in fairness, I believe they did make it clear that the later entrants might miss out. The finish area could probably do with a bit of work too - by the time the race clock was showing 55 minutes, there was a snaking cue of finishers waiting to collect their goodies. It wasn't impacting on finishers at all, but it definitely felt pretty busy. An easy one to sort out though, I think. They also had one of those machines that print out your finishing time, which was a nice touch.

I'll be really keen to be part of this race again next year. The weather was ideal, my training was ideal, and I am still in a bit of shock about how well things turned out :-)

  • If they've really managed to work out a way to ensure that it's actually the late entrants that miss out on medals as opposed to the late finishers, then that's a marketable formula. I'm afraid my cynical bastard gene just started shouting!
Meanwhile, imagine the mayhem that could be caused if we all just casually phoned our local race organisers claiming to be the brains behind one of the most popular fitness-based social media sites in the country and asking for free entries. Outrageous ;-)

  • This is not a professional review, but my opinion! What a fab race! loved the early start as I hate running in the heat, so that was my main reason for entering whilst it was not a pb for me it was the best I have run for years.
Positives from the run was, easy to park, clear number collection and bag drop off, plenty of toilets, although there were queues as they were unisex they went down quickly, the early start, wide closed roads so no congestion, flat (ish) course, chip timing available straight after the finish.
Negatives, no signs from the parking to the start area (we relied on following someone else!) and the queues at the end for the medal, banana etc that said there was plenty and we all queued like good brits!!!
Definitely one for the diary next year and I will be recommending it as a club champs

  • Oooh, that's a pretty huge PB for a 10K. Well done. I was thinking as the blog began that you were starting too quickly and were going to suffer later, but loving your work. Nice 6:xx action at the end - a negative split - 22:11 to 21:58? Now that's the way to pace a race. :-) G
