Pantsfest! May the stains be ever in your favour!

10:12am, 22 Dec 2016
Greetings, apprentices!

Today we begin a three day ceremony marking everything that is important in life. Such as wearing pants... mainly that, actually.

The Boy and I have just performed the opening ceremony (no pants were opened), and we invite you all to join us in our celebration of inexpensive fun and silly games.

We will shortly be beginning our first event: the 10.15 Bottle Flip Challenge.

Other highlights from today's include:

FIFA Challenge
Fish Finger Death Match
Ping Pork
Funny Accent Hour (hopefully including Christian Bale cameo)
Pants Biscuit Bake Off
Stair Throwing (With Stares)

We hope that you can join us in celebrating Pantsfest - and would welcome your suggestions for events for the next few days.

On behalf of The Boy and myself, and everyone who enjoys wearing pants, we wish you a most joyous Pantsfest. May the stains be ever in your favour!

#FEXIT

8:44am, 20 Dec 2016
Dear Fetchie,

As of December 31st (pending a few signatures), Fetcheveryone will become an independent website once again, with every aspect of the site owned and controlled by me, Mr Fetch! It will no longer be a part of Hearst-Rodale, and I will also no longer be their employee.

Before I go on, the headline here is that NOTHING WILL STOP US NOW!

I think most of you will be aware of the Fetcheveryone story. I started the site in 2004 as a way to log my training - just as a little coding project in the evenings - but by 2007 we had 6000 registered users. I was approached by Hearst-Rodale who wanted to buy the website and employ me to run it. So for the last 9.5 years, I have worked full-time on the website as an employee - yet I hope it’s clear that it has remained my utter pride and joy throughout.

Over the last year or so, many of you will have seen my efforts to ensure the site generates enough revenue to pay its own way. Your generous donations, and the money I’ve been able to generate through on-site advertising have gone some way towards that. But in the whole of the last 9.5 years, the site has fallen some way short of what is needed within a publishing company that is constrained by the same difficult world we all share.

Now it’s just me, with no corporate involvement whatsoever. But like I said earlier, we’re not going away. We're going to get stronger. If nothing changes, the site already generates enough revenue to support itself, and to go some way towards making an income for me too.

As things stand right now, I will need to do a couple of days of freelance web development each week (let me know if you need a coder) to top things up, leaving me with three days of Fetching. Of course, the ideal scenario for me would be to continue to devote every minute of my time to supporting the website. I love doing it, I love looking after all of you - I don’t ever want to step away from it.

I would be very grateful therefore if you could take a few minutes to think about whether you can make an ongoing monthly donation to support Fetcheveryone. I hope it helps to know that it will be coming directly to me. I will shortly be sharing my bank account details, because I think the simplest, most cost-effective way to make a contribution would be with a standing order. It gives you complete control should your circumstances change, and whether your contribution is £1, £10 or £100 a month (or anything in between), it will all make a difference. Of course, I know that some of you have taken out voluntary subscriptions to the site already - and I would of course honour those - but it would be of enormous help in planning for the future to establish a regular income by building up a core of monthly contributions.

I’m not an extravagant person. I am used to running the website on minimum budget (the server being the only expense of note), and I have no ambitions to own a fancy car, diamond-encrusted running shoes, or to do anything other than look after my family. I've never considered myself to be 'Lord' Fetch, and nor do I aspire to be. Your ongoing donations and purchases will be spent on Marmite, cake mix (actually ingredients, thanks Girlie for that tip), and council tax - and will help us reach out to thousands of runners, with a continuing message of inclusivity, support, and a little bit of fun.

Drop me a line and let me know what you think, and if you can, an idea of what you might be able to contribute. If you have any questions, I will reply.

Thanks,
Ian

  • Maybe you should put a Donate button on the site for people who'd just like to donate the price of a cup of coffee if they don't want to do a monthly sub? And maybe have a couple of suggested monthly amounts to give people some guidance? Otherwise people might feel it's a bit vague. You could use some sort of running kit unit perhaps, after all people are happy to shell out for a new sports bra or pair of shoes or capris on a regular basis, and personally I'd be happy to contribute a pair of running socks' worth a month :)

  • I think a donate game, with cups of coffee, cayke, soup and loaves of bread, tins of beans, and as the donate buttons are pressed (and you donate the price of that item) the graph/stack of food adds an icon. You can then choose to "feed Fetch" (yes that's the new game name), where you can see what has been bought before and choose to drown him in scotch eggs, or milk, or get him something more extravegant that he's carefully posted (say posh coffee?). This really needs to materialise into an exact reality of what he actually ends up getting into his house (his only control is what he puts on the donate options).

If only Tesco (*other supermarkets do exist) had a wishlist you could share for other people to buy items for you, and when you hit "deliver" it closes the list (emtpy or full) and they drive it over. It could be the new face of food banking/student feeding/neighbour helping/elderly/vulnerable. Donors can see it and it gets posted onto a generalised local map so you can buy food for people local to somewhere of your choice that *they actually need*.
The supermarket integrates with it socially (like it's donation bins at the entrance) to encourage everyone to buy something from a crowd funded shopping list when they complete an order online.

There you go Ian, a completely new social concept that needs a webmaster. Food shopping crowdfunding. I think it could work. If only Tesco have an API...

When you get the award, please give me a mention for the crazy idea in the first place.

oh and good luck with the same old venture. Hope they don't make you move office.

And they don't live very long generally do they so it wouldn't be all that long most likely before I needed to buy another. I'd chuck in a pair of running gloves in the winter too........... :-)

Is there anyone with Photoshop who could spare 20 minutes later this evening or tomorrow? My laptop expired this morning, and I need to prepare a couple of images for Sunday and Monday's doors in the calendar. It shouldn't take too long I hope.

Attention: Fitbit users

11:08am, 6 Dec 2016
Hello Fitbitters,

Whilst you're all having fun with the calendar, I'm working on Fitbit integration with the training log. So you'll be able to import your training runs and rides from the Fitbit website, in the same way that you can with TomTom and Garmin.

For updates, and to give me an idea of how many of you there are, join the group:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/groups-view.php?id=1244

And in case you hadn't spotted it, there's a Fitbit Charge 2 waiting behind one of the doors in the calendar some time soon :-)

  • Fitbit famously don't do 'wet' apart from the Pulse2(?) - the sports super watch (Surge I think) has to be taken off in the shower. It's a shame because there's so, so much to like about Fitbit kit - the 'dayside only' thing is a PITA too far for me at least (I've got a One and a Charge - I have some experience).

  • I like :-) I tend to use Garmin data as it seems to be more accurate, but it will be really useful to be able to upload treddy runs, which my FitBit seems to pick up, and to have it when I forget to take my Garmin to parkrun. Is it just listing old runs (beginning of November) cos it's a beta?

Bedford Half 2016

10:05am, 5 Dec 2016
Expecting the official race results later on today, but by my reckoning, I got a tiny course PB (maybe about 2 seconds) beating last year's time. Even if I'm just the wrong side of the line, I'm still very happy with how yesterday's run went.

This time last year, I went into the race with not so many long runs (I'd peaked at about 10 miles), but I'd done quite a lot of speedwork (6 interval sessions, a couple of tempo's, and some fast parkruns). This year, I've done lots of longer runs (five 13 milers), and relatively little speedwork (2 sessions where I did 5 miles at slightly faster than race pace). So I went into the race feeling like I'd have the endurance, but not the speed.

I've found that it helps to really concentrate in the first half of the race - not to let the pace get away from you in either direction. Last year I averaged 8:02 for the first five miles, with a fastest of 7:47 and a slowest of 8:16. This year it was an average of 8:09 with a quickest of 8:03 and a slowest of 8:15. I felt like I controlled the mad urges well :-)

The next four miles are likewise, with the longest hills too. Last year they ranged from 7:55 to 8:35, but this year I kept the grouping a bit closer, with a range between 7:56 and 8:16. The quickest one in this set is a nice downhill, tempered by the sight of the hill you need to go back up when you're done.

Usually, I kid myself that by the time I reach the long downhill in mile 10, I will be able to make up any lost time earlier in the course - but I've learned from experience (this is my fifth time doing this race) that my quads are usually mashed by then, and it's hard to take advantage. But feeling a bit stronger, last year's 7:51 was a 7:46 this time round. In retrospect, I think I might have done better if I'd have reined in this urge to make the use of the hill.

Because.. what I need to remember is that the quad mashing hits in mile 11, when you've flung yourself down the hill on tired shock absorbers, and the road flattens out, and even goes up again. Sadistic bloody course. So mile 11 was a struggle, and I really had to give myself a bit of a talking to. You know the sort, where you tell yourself that there's only 24 more minutes of this, and then it'll all be over. There was an uphill I'd forgotten about, into Upper Shelton (the clue's in the frickin' name), which was a real sapper, mentally and physically, that made mile 11 the slowest one so far with an 8.17.

I was really flagging going into mile 12, but goodness knows how, I managed to pull it back slightly with an 8.15. Mile 13 is real twist of the knife, and I really went into 'one foot in front of the other' mode, as the final hill winds on to infinity. The marshals were lovely though (as they were throughout), and the slightly pleasing thing is that last year's 9:01 for this mile was a slightly more respectable 8:48. But despite the last 0.1 dipping back down again, I didn't have much fight left in me, and was just pleased to finish.

Vote Fetch!

We seem to have made the shortlist for the 'Online Community' category at this year's Running Awards :-) If it's anything like last year, they scrub all the votes, and we go again to decide a winner. So even if you've voted already, please can you get in there and vote Fetch? It's the challenge in tomorrow's #festivefetchcalendar, so you'll be ahead of the game:

Thanks :-)
