Deliveryman

11:53am, 25 Nov 2016
Delivery Man [on the phone]: we've come down your street, and there's a big concrete bollard stopping us getting to your house.
Me: Yeah, it fools a lot of sat navs. If you go back to the main road and turn right, then take the next right...
Delivery Man: I can't turn right mate, that'll take me away from your house.
Me: No seriously, it's ok.
Delivery Man: Can't turn right mate, that's the wrong direction.
Me: Look, this is where I live ok, I know how to get here.
Delivery Man: Ok, I'm back on the road, and I'm turning right where you said. Hold on, there's a big metal gate - I can't go down there mate.
Me: Stay calm, you don't have to. There's a turning.
Delivery Man: I've got a big truck here, are you sure?
Me: Yes, lots of people have things delivered, and the bin lorry gets down here just fine.

So they turn onto my street, and there's much waving from the delivery men, as I'm standing by the door, looking out for them. They proceed to do a million-point turn in the most inappropriate place possible, denting their van with a crunch on a lamppost. Finally they pull up, and I'm taking the packages in (it's a new bed). As I'm coming downstairs to grab the last package, the driver is standing on the doorstep holding up a small Batarang.

Delivery Man: Do you like Batman then?
Me: (thinking it was on the pavement) Ooh, I don't know where that came from.
Delivery Man: It's mine.
Me: That's nice.
Delivery Man: I use it for opening bottles and cutting stuff.
Me: Oh? (slightly freaked out now)
Delivery Man: Yeah, like plastic off packages and stuff. So you like Batman then do you?
Me: Ah, phew. Who doesn't like Batman eh?
Delivery Man: I love him. Have a nice day.

And with that, he climbed back into the deliverymobile, and disappeared into the daylight. Who knows where we will see him next?

Movember: Project Beard: Day 24: Beardraggled

9:40am, 24 Nov 2016
Here's the latest incarnation of the beard:

Yesterday was not a good day in beard land. The moustache area has the consistency of a toilet brush. The whole thing has gone past itching now, and into that stage where I hypnotise myself into rummaging through it with my fingertips. The unpleasantness comes as all the hairs then start working to their own agendas, shuffling past each other to get to the optimum spot. It feels like someone has painted something sticky and alive onto my face.

Anyway. I'm doing this for a reason, which is the whole Movember thing. So locate the nearest set of testicles immediately, and check them for unexpectedness. Do it.

Festive Fetch Calendar 2016

2:24pm, 21 Nov 2016
Right then. It's a-coming :-)

This year, you're gonna want to make sure you're in at the start, so make sure you've got Thursday December 1st in your calendars.

If you're new, it's a bit like an advent calendar, but with prizes behind each door. The prizes range from boxes of energy gels, right up to an overseas trip (spoiler alert - no CLS this year, but I've lined up somewhere else). In between we've got watches, trainers, rucksacks, books, maps, vouchers, and a few surprises.

What I need from you lot now, are some suggestions for little challenges to accompany some of the doors. So last year, we did stuff like 'write a food bank blog', and 'add someone as a buddy'. Not necessarily complex, but partially to get people engaged with the site, and also a decent portion of spread-the-love altruism. Post your ideas here, or on the thread: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/viewtopic.php?id=59432

Hey Chiefy

9:23am, 17 Nov 2016
Here's something new I've done for November :-)

I can't say I'm in love with it yet, nor can I see any way forward for me and the beard. T'wife doesn't like the prickles, and t'boy is afeard of the beard. But I'm sticking with it 'til midnight on the 30th.

And as the whole point is to raise awareness of mens health, please can you all now check yourselves for any deficiencies, warning lights, strange rattles, loose screws, bumps where there oughtn't to be bumps, gaps where there ought to be no gaps, and most importantly, lack of support where there ought to be. It's a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how I keep from going under. Ah-huh huh-huh. And that's just my beard.

  • I think you may need to apply a 'handicap' factor to the various Ironman races like golf courses vary in difficulty. Lanza & Wales for example are probably about an hour tougher than Austria & Roth.
I probably raced better in Altriman (6000m climb on bike, 1000m climb on run) taking 18 hours, than I did in Austria (1200m on bike, flat run) taking 11hrs 20.
If you have talent then you can probably race some very fast times on about 10 well-targeted hours a week

Training Log Beta

2:12pm, 9 Nov 2016
I've done a little bit of shuffling around of the elements in the training log beta - just moving a few bits up and down the page. See yesterday's blog for some info, particularly the bit about viewing in landscape mode if you're on a phone.

So here's the beta:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/trainingbeta.php

and here's the poll:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/polls-view.php?id=5629

If you voted anywhere south of average before, do have a look, and see if your opinion has changed. If you still don't like it, say something, even if it's "see original comment".

  • I still think it's less good for me than before (me being - almost always on a PC when looking at training log) since each page has less on it now. Specifically - what I wrote before (last month?) about Entries / Calendar / Summary being on 3 separate pages now, when I liked to be able to run my eyes across them all together previously.

    3:30pm, 9th Nov 2016
  • Nice one! (if we all do that - not use tabs - will you be back in the same server bother as you were before? ;-))
(you've moved it to a little cog-wheel at the top, rather than "configure your training log", I think?)
But - the Entries table formatting is not right, at least for me - about 2x width of screen when tabs not in use, but OK when tabs used)
    paul the builder
    3:40pm, 9th Nov 2016
  • I don't really need to see the entire 10 year history in the table. It takes up half of my laptop screen! (I probably liked a previous iteration before everyone said make it like this?) Oh - I can click on 2016. Why not put a date selector like lower down to make it really obvious, and then I could have just my runs for 2016 without feeling bad about the lack of swimming or running. How do I get back to "Most Recent Month" after selecting another period? (I'd make it "Last 30 days" by the way.) Selections are a bit eratic; if I select Other and click on a month is shows me all types for the month. Then I click Cross Training only in the detail and the whole page refreshes back to Run. Maybe move the date selector and the activity selector to the top and have the whole page work from that?

    fetcheveryone
    4:14pm, 9th Nov 2016
  • Under the "Entries" display, the LH columns are too narrow and the figures spill over into the next column making it very difficult to read.
I might be interested in the map, but could the Hexagons be colour coded to distinguish between running, walking and cycling?
    Flatlander
    4:54pm, 9th Nov 2016
  • When not using tabs, it looks like every column is shown in the 'entries' table, rather than just the subset of Heart/Preidctions/Notes/whatever.
CharlieP's question - no, the hexagons don't work perfectly outside Bedford ;-).
    http://www.fetcheveryone.com/gallery-showphoto.php?id=85341
I guess the hexagons might have to 'flex' in the same way that Conquersize squares do? Which would probably make them not-very-hexagony for most of us then, assuming that they are perfectly regular at the equator.
    paul the builder
    8:38am, 10th Nov 2016
  • the "Recent" isn't displaying as a proper drop down - just appears as a white text field until I click it
Is it possible to load all the rows in the background rather than displaying every year's row when the page first loads and then hiding all but the most recent?

Still think the summary and entries tabs would be better combined.
    (Safari/Mac)

  • Been commenting on the thread so you know I like it. Use on my mobile and tablet so like the tabs, it is a pain when looking at a whole year to have to scroll down through all entries to see the summary so tabs work perfectly for this.
    SPR
    10:02am, 10th Nov 2016
  • Flatlander - can you upload a screenshot, and let me know what you're browsing on? Colour coding might be tricky, but I'll have a think. I've got to save *something* for v2 :-)

CharlieP - less of the Lord, but I approve of the spelling of Ffetch :-) The hexagons are 2D, and enough maths to make my brain hurt. There are still 'orphaned' hexagons where the algorithm goes slightly wrong. Edinburgh to the IOW is all fine, but there are gaps when you get as far south as (say) Lanzarote.

mbln - for at least a year :-)

ptb - the columns are all displayed, and then when the page is loaded, the unwanted ones are hidden. Could be that something is halting page load, like maybe bad ad code (if you have them) or a plugin.

flanker - is it black text on a white box? As for background loading, I've been working on the basis that if jquery fails to get going (like ptb has been experiencing - see previous comment) then at least the log will be presented. Better to fail to hide stuff, than to fail to show stuff.

    SPR - :-)

  • Yes, black text in a white box. Same on the mobile too.

Get why you load all the data, display it, then hide it. But the screen jumping around expanding then contracting when it does is pretty hideous. And given that it still has to load it all anyway does it actually solve the problem? I'd have thought it better to do load it in a background thread and show nothing until you get the correct dataset?

Feel like I'm always picking fault. Generally I like it and on the plus side it definitely works a lot better on the mobile than the old version.

  • It's revealing some interesting things.... here's a query - any way of showing the average speed at which you ran for that month? I quite like the new look, I would love to be able to customise the view of the annual summary at the top of the page - switch this figure on here, turn that off there, but I suspect I'm asking way too much :-) It's blown my mind as for the first time it's given me some really interesting stats I hadn't considered (like the faster I run overall in a year, the better I do in races - which contradicts HR running and polarised a bit). I'm sat here thinking, show up months with a pb in red just by clicking on them, and then switch on something like average speed per month, or average number of intervals or hill sessions, and see the correlations, and that would be more sorted for life. In fact I don't think I'd need to run anymore, ever!

Updates to Training Beta

12:41pm, 8 Nov 2016
Two updates to point you at:

1) Rolling monthly totals. Lots of you were massively unsure about how the rolling 12-month totals were supposed to work- particularly when you chose a date from an older year, and didn't get an updated set of monthly totals. So I've reverted the standard view back to "all years", *but* in the little drop down where you used to be able to choose "run distance", "run time", "swim distance", "swim time" etc etc, there's now an option called '2016'. If you just want to see the monthly totals for the current year, you can choose this. The site remembers your choice. I think I will include a rolling 12 month summary in the 'training home' page that sits above this one.

2) Lean to the side. The other cause of dismay with the new responsive design as a whole has been the loss of detail on some pages, when viewing on a mobile device. On the training log for example, the existing log just gives you Date, Category, Distance, Time, Pace, Mph. There's no access to the other fields, like your heart rate stats, not without going into the individual training entry. This p*ssed quite a lot of people off. But with the latest version, if you want more detail, you just hold your phone in landscape mode, and you get a whole load of extra columns and data.

So here's the poll again:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/polls-view.php?id=5629

If you voted awful, poor or average last time, see if the above info has helped improve your viewpoint. If so, upgrade your vote. If not, leave your comments below. Cheers.

Movember: Project Beard - Day 8 (The Seven Day Itch)

10:35am, 8 Nov 2016
Here's what happened last time I did Movember - 9 years ago:

What a scary image! But after promising I would never have a moustache again, I've exploited a loophole in the constitution, and triggered Project Beard!

Here I am on day 8. It's been itchy as hell (which probably is terribly itchy, if it's been doing its homework). I read some tips online, so I've battered it with conditioner in the shower after my run this morning.

Subscriber offer: Unlock the 'tache! I will make a subscriber-only picture available on November 30th, when I will shave off the rest to leave just the moustache. Non-subscribers will get two pictures.

Training Log Detail View - Some Changes

4:26pm, 2 Nov 2016
In no particular order, here are a bunch of small changes to the detail view in your training log (i.e. the page you see when you click on any run, ride, swim or x-train):

1) the 'Write a comment' box doesn't appear right at the top when you're viewing your own entries. Why would you want it to?
2) The summary information about your training and 'useful buttons' have been consolidated into one bar across the top of the page.
3) Surface doesn't appear in the summary, for swimming :-)
4) In fact, any pointlessly zero'd numbers in the header are hidden e.g. '0km of yoga'.
5) The 'Save this as a route' box is now overlaid on the top-right corner of the map
6) The notes field is now the same height as the map - if you have a lot of notes, a scroll bar appears.
7) If there's no map available, we don't waste screen telling you.
8) Likewise, when there's no map, the notes field reverts to 'however big it needs to be' - less wastage on mobile.
9) For mobile users, the map is slightly shorter, so you don't run aground when scrolling.

You can have that.

  • 6 hours hard effort? 😳 I think this may need a bit of thinking through.

  • Using the typically quoted ratio of 80%/20% of easy to hard training, that means you are looking for people who do about 30hrs training a week? Good luck.

Consultation V2

6:52pm, 1 Nov 2016
As the number of suggested changes grows, I think the voting mechanism needs to improve with it.

You're no longer restricted to five votes - and you can vote for or against every single proposal:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/consultation.php

A vote 'for' adds one to the score, whereas a vote 'against' is worth minus one.

Happy voting :-)
Click here to suggest fetcheveryone's blog for today's highlights.

Comments

  • Not convinced this will improve voting. I think you'll end up with a large number of features that everyone votes for, but you won't be able to distinguish the 'killer' features to implement first as you can with just 5 votes.
    flanker
    10:37pm, 1st Nov 2016
  • Without advocating the Daily Mail in anyway but the voting doesn't distinguish in the same way their system does (plus votes and down votes), so you might have something a small amount of people think is a good idea (say 50 yes and 0 no) or something controversial that everybody has a say on (300 yes 250 no) and I'd argue that in a voting system, you'd want to differentiate between the two? (Just saying :-) )

[Untitled]

4:39pm, 1 Nov 2016
Here's a quick view of the new 'glasses' view I've been knocking up in Photoshop. Things to think about:

1) the 'conditions' e.g. cold, top of the world, windy etc appear in the red bar above the map, as little icons.
2) ascent and descent move into the black box top right with the other summary data.
3) there's a new little interactive graph just below the notes. You can mouseover it, *or* over the map, and see your data at that point. There's a little black bar under elevation - you could switch it to a pace graph, HR, whatever.
4) The bulk of the other content on the page goes into seven tabs: splits (the split breaker), graphs (like the big ones on the current page), kit (with extra information about how you've done in that kit), comparisons (benchmarks, checkpoints, and predictions), heart rate (yep, heart rate stuff), comments (from others - with a little badge icon to show you when there are new ones), and games (which Conq zones, and a link to see Fetchpoint stuff etc).

Like? Don't like? Leave a comment :-)

  • Sorry Fetch, but I prefer everything on one page, rather than having to flick between tabs.

  • "They" may get used to the tabs, but "they" were answering the question "Like?".
    Nelly
    7:20pm, 1st Nov 2016
  • Yep, I'm with Nelly here, and would rather see everything on one page.

Would be interested to hear what the driver is to change various pages to have less data viewable at one go and have to jump between tabs. Is it in some way a better design philosophy for mobile users ? Everything seems to be getting driven by the "needs" of mobile users these days, but I think the latest stats still showed that the majority of users were still on non-mobile devices.

  • Feels like adding features because you have a new toy rather than to improve functionality/usability.
    flanker
    10:39pm, 1st Nov 2016
  • I also think I prefer everything on one page. There is already A LOT of great stuff here on FE, but it seems to be getting spread across more pages.
    StuH
    10:50pm, 1st Nov 2016
  • I don't mind the tabs. I don't usually look at kit and at the moment I'm not monitoring heart rate.
    sallykate
    10:37am, 2nd Nov 2016
  • I like the proposed view! Looks great. Grouping by tab is sensible and works well, as long as switching between tabs is very snappy.
    murmur
    1:18pm, 2nd Nov 2016
  • The tabs would all be client-side, so they should be instant. And I'm currently thinking about how I can appease both camps - with a layout that can be tabbed or fully-expanded.
