[warning - largely self-absorbed running stats blog]

I had a nice run this morning - I'm up to 12 miles now which, aside from Bedford Half, is my longest run since London. My goal race is Bath Half in March - so I feel like things are in a good place. The winger has sent in a lovely cross, and I'm in the box, and I've just got to get my head on it.

The plan for February is to gently increase the long runs, so that I'm doing a couple of 14's, and maybe a 15 - but my 12 is already longer in terms of time than the half marathon will (hopefully) be. I've got an eight-year-old half PB of 1:45:57 (8:05/mile), and I'd really like to improve on that, if only by a second. Bedford Half in December was encouraging - 1:47:38 on a windy and hilly course, and on the back of nowhere near enough long runs. I held out pretty well, and only fell apart in the last mile really.

I've also been doing some tempo runs. I was doing 6 x 1k, and 3 x2k intervals, but I wasn't seeing a lot (if any) improvement in my speed - so I switched to doing five mile tempo runs at about 7:30/mile. For the next few weeks, I'm planning to gradually increase the distance on these, up to maybe 8 miles. My theory for Bedford was that if I could run 5 miles at 7:30/mile, then it would put me in good stead for running 13.1 at 8:00/mile. So I'm sort of upping the stakes and attacking it from both ends.

Incidents from the run today:

1) battery in wireless headphones started whinging about 200 yards into the run :-(
2) I saw a deer in the forest :-)
3) Buffs are my new favourite thing :-)
4) There was bird shit on my knuckle, from where I know not :-/
5) I ran past a young lady wearing a 'Sneaker Freak' hoodie, and from a distance, I thought she was a Bill Werbeniuk fan :-)

I also had a meeting last night with the outgoing Event Director from Bedford parkrun. I now have our reserve set of tokens, and will start the bidding at £10 for positions inside the top ten :-)

  • you'll get under 1:45, long runs are always my downfall, 10,11, ok after that I get a bored with it, perhaps I run them too fast. Tempo's always a decent idea., 8 miles looks a long way at 7.30!! Bath is a good race, it will start late it always does, people are slightly off about their times, so depending on what you gave as a prediction, you could find yourself with quite a few people slower than yourself, so beware of a congested start. Nice noisy finish though, and the food on the rec at the end is ace!

Badges - Another Update

3:43pm, 20 Jan 2016
There are now 57 badges available to collect - everything from having run a single kilometre, right up to ultras, 500 mile months, and some biking and swimming ones too.

The badge system currently checks what you've earned whenever you log some training - so if you're curious to see what you've earned, then try adding a dummy entry to your training log (but obviously, if you add a 1000 mile run, it's gonna spoil all your fun with earning the badges, so put something realistic in).

Eventually (like maybe tomorrow), there will be a little fmail notification when you unlock a new badge, but for now, you can see what you've unlocked by going here:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/badges.php

There will also be an opt-out from that fmail, which will unlock the 'Humbug' badge :-)

Despite the fact that there are a whole 57 badges, I've not even grazed the surface of the suggestions that have been made - so don't be disheartened if it feels like a flash in the pan. I've built it in such a way that I can add badges without too much effort, and now that I've got the basics in place, I can add more complex ones.

I would *ALSO* like to hear from anyone who fancies designing some badges for this. As you'll be able to see, all the badges have a standard border, but a special centre - so if you fancy trying your hand at making a badge for *some kind of achievement*, then do please shout out.

  • What I see is not what I expect to see: I see four badges of which I have IMO earned two. A headline telling me what my next targets are. No badges I do expect to earn before too long. In other words, four (random) badges, not what I have unlocked.

Unlockable Badges - Update

6:09pm, 19 Jan 2016
Today I built the code that manages badges - and started building the individual badges.

So far I've done the running and biking monthly milestone ones (e.g. a 100 mile running month). The running one starts with a 25 mile month (which is approximately the sort of mileage you can do in the first month of C25K, if you do it religiously 3 times a week), and goes all the way up to a 500 mile month. I've tried to choose similar for biking, but with an upper limit of 1000 miles in a month.

For swimming, I went old school, and have built 10m, 25m, 50m badges, all the way up to 2 miles.

They're not quite ready for you yet, but I hope to get something live towards the end of this week :-)

If the group did that three times a week, that's 4.5/week * 4.5 weeks in a month = 20.25 miles. So in a typical month, you'd actually need to get 5.6 miles/week to reach 25. You can do it! :-)

TomTom Runner 2 Review

10:16am, 15 Jan 2016
With thanks to the folks at TomTom's PR company (for being so patient mainly, and letting me use this watch for a few months), here at last is my review of the TomTom Runner 2 (which is also known as the TomTom Spark - although beware, this also comes in about five different versions, so check which features it includes, before declaring it to be a bargain. They all have core features, but some things (like the optical HR) are optional extras).

Here's a link to them on Amazon: amazon.co.uk

A few months ago, I was loaned one to test out - and I was pretty excited, because I've really enjoyed using the TomTom Multisport Cardio, and was interested to see the improvements that they'd made in the newer watch.

The new watch looks very similar to the old one - just a little bit smaller. The mechanism for attaching the watch to your wrist is slightly different now, and tbh, I found it a little less comfortable to wear - however, I think I've been sent one with a small strap, so that's probably had a bit of a bearing. The straps aren't backwards compatible, so I made do. Katie likes the look of this one, and has said "it's a shame that it has to go back", which is a sure stamp of approval :-)

The watch is still controlled by the same easy-to-use set of buttons - it's like a little flat joystick just below the watch display. If you're familiar with the old iPod Nano click/scroll wheel and menu system, it works in a very similar way.

The charging block is a bit more streamlined, which is good, although this means that if you're upgrading from an older TomTom, you can't use the old one.

The first thing that's obvious is the updated graphics on the menus - it's all just a little bit slicker - and when I went back to using the Multisport Cardio, it was almost like going back to a command-line interface. It's amazing what you can do with a few nice images :-)

The next big thing that's been added to the watch is step counting, calorie count (as in, how many you've burned that day through all your activity), total distance covered, total time spent active, and sleep. It's a nice addition, and the watch is fairly unobtrusive, so it's ok to imagine wearing it all day. I particularly liked the fact that you can quickly see some seven-day totals for all of the above - it's a simple way to balance out the fact that we all tend to have a weekly routine. It means that long run day doesn't look so freakish, and similarly, you can avoid feeling too guilty on rest days. You can see all this data on the app and website - and whilst it's not as slick as the Fitbit site, it's clear that TomTom are keen to keep pushing the quality up.

The other big change is the addition of 3Gb of music storage (which is about 500 songs, in old money). The watch has bluetooth connectivity, so you can pair it up to some wireless earphones, and then you don't have any wires to feed down the back of your t-shirt. It's a great feature to have, and it's pretty easy to use (you can use the TomTom software, but when you plug the watch into your computer, it also shows up like a Flash drive). However, if you're like me, and run with your phone in your pocket, there's every chance that you already have a device that can offer up your tunes via Bluetooth. But, if like me, your phone is there for that emergency call, then it's kind of nice having an option for playing your choones that doesn't drain your battery.

Speaking of which, all the extra features might be expected to put more of a strain on the battery. But just like its predecessor, I found that whenever I plugged it into my computer to transfer the files (I'd usually leave it in for about half an hour whilst my mind wandered around other things), it gave it enough of a kick to mean that I didn't ever have to make a *point* of charging it.

On the subject of transferring files - you can get an app on your phone that'll suck 'em off automatically, and send them to the TomTom website (which is pretty good, and pretty too), without you having to plug it in - but I prefer being able to get to the raw data, mainly because I want to upload it to Fetch, of course. You can also sync it with a few other popular running sites, and I am crossing my fingers that this connectivity will include Fetch at some point in the future.

The GPS accuracy was good - although that's pretty much a given with every watch these days. Every time you sync the watch with TomTom, it updates some info on the watch that helps you get a quick lock on (10-15s). I didn't find any issues with excessive lopping off of corners, or randomly sending me to Mozambique.

The optical HR unit has been changed in the new watch (a different manufacturer) - and unfortunately I didn't get on with it quite as well as with the TomTom Multisport Cardio. It struggled a bit in the first mile quite often, and would occasionally record a plummeting heart rate during a one-paced long run. Here's a 10 miler I did - you can see where it dropped the ball during mile 4:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-log-view.php?id=11907500

For the main though, it was reasonable, just not quite as rock-solid as the Multisport Cardio has been. I took a look at the bible of GPS reviews - the DC Rainmaker site - and although he seems to have had better luck with the optical HR sensor, he also reports a few issues: dcrainmaker.com

Overall, I'm still excited by what TomTom are doing - and despite a few issues, I'd suggest that this is a watch that's worth including in your thoughts when deciding what to buy - particularly if you want something that crams a lot into one device.

  • I'd really recommend trying one on to see how you get on with it. The strap I was sent was probably less than two-thirds of the width of the one on my older watch - so it wasn't as comfortable - but I think part of that was because it was the small size.

  • Twinny, think there are three main differences (apart from the WHRM). (1) It depends on much you want to customise intervals/workouts as the TomTom is more limited (2) Also there are only 3 fields on the tomtom screen (which you can change) (3) no auto pause on the Tom Tom.

Gallery updates

12:11pm, 14 Jan 2016
Some little changes to tell you about.

First, you can have a bit more space - 30Mb now.

Second, you can now upload PNG files (which iPhones seem to spit out sometimes, rather than JPEGs).

Third, I've made the 'upload picture' page a little bit neater.

Fourth, that little code that you have to paste in, is now a bit shorter.

Fifth, I've done away with the image categories. No one was paying them any attention anyway.

Behind the scenes, there were a bunch of other changes that happened, which made the system a lot more manageable. One of them was so revolutionary that I only came up with it *AFTER* I'd uploaded my original idea, and discovered that it was triggering the server into thinking it was facing a denial of service attack.

Unnecessary fiddling? Think of it as a footwell in your car. About every six months, it probably needs a good hoovering out. And think of it as the boot of your car. Or maybe my car. It gets filled up with so much random crap that occasionally I have to take it all out and start again. Yep, that's it.

Anyway, please try uploading an image, 'cos no-one's done so since I made the changes, and I'd like to see if it works for people who aren't me.

And also by way of a test, here's me testing the embedding code:

Did that work?

I have more plans to do exciting things - like giving you some buttons to assign your pics to your recent races or routes, or to make one of your pics into your user profile - that sort of thing. But the thought of doing that with a footwell full of grit was unfathomable.

TTFN,
Me

  • That's all at least a bit sexy. One minor quibble: I've now got 61 'pages' of pics so it's a bit of a trawl through. Also each page has 10 pics but you seem to get 6 on the top row and 4 on the bottom. Could it be a little bit expanded?

  • McG - I'm still struggling with the 'your pics' page at the moment. All the 'public' ones are symbolic linked, so that I can serve those as JPGs directly, but the private ones are served by a PHP script that checks your user credentials. And it's the rapid use of this that's causing the server to trip the switch marked "DOS Attack". I've upped it to 20 though - and if you've got a reasonable mix of public and private images, it should be ok :-)

Snowball coding and Fetch Unlockables!

6:15pm, 12 Jan 2016
I lost my inhaler a few days ago - and I was due to do a longish run today - so I was a bit nervous setting out. But it turned out to be ok. I kept it down to eight miles (I've got another chance to do a 10 on the weekend), so the only thing troubling me on the way home was my Edward Scissortoes.

There were some workers installing a big array of solar panels in a field alongside one of our usual running routes - I've never seen them that close up - they're pretty big. I like seeing stuff like that happening - and I don't mind that it's in my back yard (although if it was in my actual back yard, there wouldn't be much room for ping pong and drinking mojitos).

The Fetch Buffs arrived a couple of days ago, so I managed to get 55 of them to the post office, along with a few of the remaining prizes from the Festive Fetch Calendar (if you're waiting for Puma shoes, you're next on my list, soz). If you want a Buff, please order one here: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/shop.php

My coding work for today was to make what is (on the face of it) a fairly minor change - but it's the sort that has far reaching consequences, particularly with a codebase that spans over 11 years. I won't bore you with the detail of the change - it suffices to say that it relates to how images are displayed across the site. I now have a list of 34 different pages that all have the sort of changes that need to be tested *before* I put them live. Imagine that :-) So I think I'll save that for tomorrow now.

My last blog was about 'achievement' medals - and the overall view is fairly clear, even if there are some folks that would like them. So I've decided to put together some virtual 'unlockables' that you can collect as you train. To give you an example, there'll be one for a 100-mile month; one for a seven-day streak; that sort of thing. The idea is that they'll be suitable whether you're a noob or an old stager. There'll be a special 10,000 miles badge. And a sewing badge, for people who contribute to the knitting and craft thread (thanks to my lovely wife for that fabulous suggestion). I'd be keen to hear your other suggestions.

And finally... please prepare yourselves for a TomTom review blog - hopefully tomorrow. I've been promising the nice man from TomTom that I'd review the watch he very kindly sent me - and I've been hopeless at getting it down on paper.

Pip pip!

Achievement Medals - what do you reckon?

3:21pm, 6 Jan 2016
I've been pointed at various websites that do 'virtual races' and 'virtual challenges' and that sort of thing e.g. run X miles in 2016, and pay us £10, and we'll send you a medal or somesuch.

To be honest, it's not something that's appealed to me personally, but I know that some people like it - and the suggestion that's been made to me is that we could do some Fetch-themed medals for the various groups, like the '700 in 2016' thread, to name but one. You get the idea.

So to see whether it's a goer or not, I'm just wondering if you'd mind voting in this poll. I don't mind how many no's there are really, but it's the yes's that I'm most interested in I guess.

  • I'd be more interested in a virtual medal that appeared on my profile once I'd hit an achievement. I was chuffed to have clocked over 1000 miles in 2015, so maybe like you have bronze, silver gold etc. in the stickerbook if something likethat could be more visible either just on your profile or rather more discreet than the mitts off they're newbies badge on forum postings . . .

  • I wonder how difficult this would be in practice: let people declare 6-12 months in advance that they want to achieve something. E.g. sub 3/4/5/6 marathon, 100 miles/month all year, 12 month streak. If they then say they've achieved it, they get (a) a virtual medal such as Mulbs describes or (b) a certificate as I've described. I now like Mulbs's idea more than mine. I think there would have to be a limit of 2-3 such things at once so as not to devalue the prizes.

I'd find the virtual medals like the animal rating thing on WAVA or any of the strava crowns and so forth, they are interesting as and when you achieve them but they don't especially motivate me personally

Run The Sum

4:20pm, 5 Jan 2016
I've had an email from a Fetchie in Bangkok :-)

This is Vikas: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/userprofile.php?id=70417

He followed Binks' Run Until You Drop challenge last year, and has come up with one of his own, that I've coded up for him. It's called 'Run The Sum' - and it's a bit less nutty than the original - and looks like it could actually be fun, rather than torture.

Here's the challenge:

Join in if you fancy it, Fetchies :-) Don't break yourselves - you can take rest days and still get a good score

2015 Book List (and a bit of a review / plan)

2:59pm, 5 Jan 2016
One thing I like to do at the end of the year is to make myself a list of the books I've read. So here it is. I don't think I've missed any out, but I've been a bit holed under the waterline by Sailor Song. It's not an unentertaining read, but it doesn't exactly make me want to sing inside either. But I'm about 80% through it, so I'll push on now.

The Old Curiosity Shop
The Amateurs
Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Casino Royale
The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman
Heart of Darkness
Flowers for Algernon
The Mystic Masseur
Dear Lupin: Letters to a Wayward Son
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay
Complicity
Running and Stuff
I, Robot
The Great Gatsby
Ready Player One
Lila
The Third Policeman
Boys and Girls
The God Delusion
The Godfather
The Vesuvius Club
The Handmaid's Tale
Goodbye Mr Chips
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Angry Island
Sailor Song (nearly finished)

Some favourites (in no particular order) would include The Amateurs, Flowers for Algernon, Complicity, and The Godfather. Straight into the bargain bin would be Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

2015 was a good year for running for me. As I've gone on about in the newsletter, I was most pleased that I was consistent. The best thing I can say about VMLM was that I got through it in one piece. Aside from that, it was a year of 'very nearly'. December was a good way to round it off, with a course best at a windy and hilly Bedford Half, and a seven year 5k best at parkrun (just 6s away from my all-time best). I've somehow lost some weight (down from around 12st10 to around 12st), and I seem to be doing something close to regular intervals and tempos.

Swimming has been an absolute revelation - we started around the time that Katie was doing lots of cross-training post-VMLMLMLM, and what could so easily have been a flash in the pan has turned into 22 weekly swims since the end of June. I don't think I'm especially fast, and we've not pushed the distance, but we're regularly swimming 1km in about 27 mins, and I've got the hang of the breathing at last.

There won't be a marathon this year. I enjoyed the experience, but it also felt a bit all-consuming. So my racing aim for the first quarter of this year is going to be Bath Half - and if I can train well, I would *REALLY* like to get a PB at something.

In the mean time, I will also be trying to find those extra six seconds at parkrun. And I'll be continuing to try to convince my local event to do a food bank run - although I might have more luck with the six seconds.

My last run of the year was fun. And when I say fun, I mean a bit like water torture. My nephew wanted to run from his house up to Cwm Darren lake in Deri. We got more than a bit soaked and blown by Storm Frank. Fair play to him, we made it all the way there, and back (with a sprint-walk teenage fartlek thing). Sadly, both my nipples perished in the effort.

Right then, I'm heading back to my list.

Comments

  • I am kicking myself for not doing a 'books I've read list' in 2015. I keep picking ones up and realising I read em at some point. Your review certainly killed off any urge I had to buy JLSeagull.

  • Congrats to all winners. Just out of nosiness (and 'cos I know you like a statistic), how great a difference is there in numbers of entries between the various prizes?
