Pheasant

9:18pm, 28 Feb 2015
I am as full as a pheasant, and sitting on our bed with my feet up, doing nothing but digesting.

We got to Bath at about 1pm today, and after checking into our lovely B&B, we met up with Mr and Mrs Jigs for a nice lunch, and a stroll through the drizzle through the city centre. Then it was back to our room to watch the rugby (yay, exciting), before a lovely dinner cooked by our lovely hosts (google "77 Pultney Street", it's lovely).

Quite excited about the race now - and a bit nervous to boot. The wind seems ok at the moment, but it's due to pick up just as the race starts. So we could get really lucky. If it turns out to be hard work, I'll just switch off and try to enjoy the run.

Right then. This is too much effort now, so I'll sign off. Good luck to everyone racing tomorrow, and big hugs to everyone who isn't.

An Unexpected Journey

2:53pm, 27 Feb 2015
It's Book Day at school today, which means everyone has to dress up as a character from a book. The kids mainly enjoy it, and the parents usually tear their hair out.

My boy went as a hobbit today. We couldn't decide which one he should be, so we went with the hybrid Thrillbo Baggins. His mum has helped him collect all the bits and bobs he needed, and I was entrusted with the job of trying to curl his hair. This didn't go well - I managed to burn his head. And when we transferred all the bits from his mum's car to mine, we didn't transfer all the bits. Luckily she'd noticed this morning, and dropped them off at a safe house on our route to school - hence the blog title.

It was the first continuous 20 minute run for the beginners group today, and they absolutely nailed it :-) We covered 1.7 miles in that time, so the distance is creeping up too. It's made me think back to before it all started, and all the concerns and doubts that they had. The best bit of the day was hearing how it's given them some added energy to do stuff like having races with their kids, and running up stairs. Big smiles all round, as we keep building towards that first 5k :-)

Meanwhile, back at the coal face, I'm still noodling around with the 'Train' page. What would you like to see on there, and what would you be disappointed to lose? I'm asking all this now, so that when I do it the way I was gonna do it anyway, I can at least pretend you were consulted ;-)

  • Until a couple of years ago, when we logged a type of run (e.g., tempo, interval) we would get a pop up box showing recent runs of the same type, which I found very useful to gauge any improvements. I know we now have the Run Pace (Rolling) chart, but that can get quite skewed by LSRs, so any chance of reinstating the pop up?

Wind picking up...

9:36pm, 26 Feb 2015
It's a run with my beginners tomorrow - and a bit of a milestone, as we tackle our first continuous 20 minute run :-) They've been doing 2 x 10 mins, with a break sandwiched in the middle, this week - so we're getting together as a group to sew it all together. They've all done pretty well on it so far.

We'll cover about 2 miles in that time, maybe a little bit less, and then I'll do 1-2 myself afterwards - all at a gentle pace, and then that's me done before Bath on Sunday :-O The wind seems to be picking up - it's now reported as being a 27mph westerly wind. The adjusted plan for wind goes like this:

Mile 1 = just go with the adrenaline. Mostly a side-wind.
Mile 2 = a mixture of into and out of the wind. Hang on.
Mile 3-4 = straight into the wind. Don't lose too much.
Mile 5-6.6 = make hay whilst the wind blows
Mile 8-9.5 = tuck in behind someone big
Mile 9.5-13.1 = fly home

Parents evening tonight - and the boy is doing ok. The teacher says he's keen to contribute in class, and seems happy to talk about what he knows, but he's a bit more reluctant when it comes to getting stuff down on paper. To the point where he's trying to do the least amount possible :-) Some careful shoeing required :-)

An unplanned kit alarm

9:35pm, 25 Feb 2015
Today I've been working on a redesign of the page you get to when you click 'Train'. None of it's live yet, so don't rush off for a look.

The stats show that it gets about half the number of page views as the main training log page (that's the one with the month navigator, and your list of training on it). However, I think the 'Train' page serves an important purpose, and I want to make a bit more of it. In my head, it needs to be like a dashboard, giving you an overview of your recent training - summarising all the important data, so you can get an idea of how you're doing without having to poke and prod at your training log.

That's all well and good for the folks who have lots of recent data - but I feel like it's also really failing to make an impression on new users. Try logging out for a moment, and then clicking on 'Train'. It looks bloody awful, doesn't it? There's a whole bunch of blank graphs on the left; there's a broken image where the kit list would be; there's some copy about mileage targets that doesn't make a lot of sense; and anything that might indicate some sort of life on the page (the list of recent training) is a whole scroll down the page. It's not all that great for early users either - in fact, it really only kicks into life when you've got plenty of data.

It needs an update.

Lots of people come to Fetch because they hear about the training log, or they come to the home page, and click the tabs in the menu. Forum = does what it says on the tin. Train = doesn't exactly lead you through the process.

More on that tomorrow. Suggestions welcome!

One of the things that happened whilst I was working on this today was the addition of kit alarms. It struck me that the 'kit graph' on the Train page might not need to be there at all, if you could get alerted when your kit had reached a certain mileage. So that's been added to the kit page now. I hope you like it.

  • not quite what you're asking but I'd like the current month's log to be shown above all previous years so that I don't have to scroll down the page. Would also like the "calendar view" to cover the previous 4-5 weeks rather than the current calendar month.

  • I hate to go on and on about the advertising (and yes, I know it's apparently necessary so that the tightwads don't have to pay to use the site and that that's part of the cachet of Fetch) but, part of the problem is the disproportionately large (and amusing?) picture of a dog pishing on someone's shoes, which is an inducement to participate in Checkpoint (The Game)™, which is a thinly disguised advert for Gore. Remove the 'advert' and free up a load of space for other stuff.

I agree that, when you log out and look at the page it's a load of meaningless blanks (apart from the dog picture) and I agree that it might not be a great shop window for Fetch. I don't have immediate solutions or even ideas, sorry. I'll try to be more helpful tomorrow.

I agree with ChrisHB that the 'calendar view' should cover a set number of weeks rather than a standard month.

  • Dio - I like it too - I'm gonna try to keep the best bits, but maybe put them into a more inspiring order.

Chris - the calendar on the right will show whatever date range is asked of it - so it follows the default, which is the current month. I'd agree that it might be more useful for the whole thing to show the last X weeks, rather than the month (which sometimes, esp. on 1st of the month means there are no entries to be seen). Leave that one with me. I'm not quite sure how I'd handle moving the month navigator right now, but let me have a think.

Angus - Checkpoints isn't connected to Gore. You're thinking of Fetchpoint. Incidentally, I think the large image probably will disappear as part of the redesign. Lots of people have fun playing both games (and the chance to win free stuff is largely welcomed as an extra bit of fun), and a lot of hard work has gone into building them, so perhaps I need to do more to ensure they aren't dismissed as advertisements.

Whether or not we agree about advertising (which I'm also not complaining about because I've turned mine off with AdBlocker), all I'm saying is the mahoosive picture of a wee dog taking a wizz is, perhaps, less intelligible to someone who hasn't been around the site for long and was expecting maybe charts, graphs, stats and analysis (which I know are comprehensive and elsewhere). And it takes up loads of space on the page.

  • I like the 'train' page and the graph section in particular.

Could a short narrative be displayed to explain what each graph is depicting, perhaps when you hover over the graph name (in the same way as the exact numbers are shown when hovering over the graph detail). Yes, I know some are very self-explanatory and may not need much text at all, but I’ve forgotten what the ‘run benchmark’ and ‘pace percentage’ graphs are supposed to show and what the days to the left and right of zero on the ‘creaks and streaks’ graph represent.

Perhaps a short paragraph to explain what result would be shown if your training was improving your running times.

Could the time period selected for the graphs be shown in the general heading at the top of the graph section as an aid-memoir to save having to visit the control page? Perhaps this could also be updated from the ‘train’ page itself?

A link to training articles that can be found elsewhere on the site may also be helpful and increase cross referencing to integrate other pages.

Race Pace Test

10:31am, 24 Feb 2015
Just back from my test run at race pace, and I wanted to get some notes down about how it went, before I forget some of the detail, as it feels pretty useful.

Here's the run:
http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-log-view.php?id=11019691

The mile splits go like this:
8:53 (WU), 7:56, 7:54, 8:01, 8:00 (not the 9:04 that's reported - I stopped to do a bit of filming before the thing clicked over. Doh!)

The avge HR splits go like this:
133, 161,164,167,171

Firstly, I'm a tiny bit wheezy now, which is unusual, particularly as I've been doing most of my runs faster than this. It might be down to breathing being a bit tougher in the wind, or it might be that my inhaler is on its last legs. Breathing certainly felt quite laboured after I turned into the wind. I've just looked at the local weather forecast, and it's showing as 20mph from the west, which means I was running straight into it. This has cheered me right up, as I didn't realise it was that strong. However, the (admittedly vague long term) forecast for Bath on Sunday is a 22mph westerly wind. At least it'll help blow me home, as it'll be at my back from 9.5 miles 'til the end.

Secondly, I had my watch set up to show me my lap pace. This is the sort of reading that means absolutely nothing for the first 0.1 of each mile, but gets pretty useful from then on. I'd been trying to hit 7:55, and thought I was doing well, but when each mile beeped, the total lap times were consistently about 4-5s slower per mile. This was worrying me a bit, as I wondered if it meant that I'd have to push even faster to hit my goal pace. However, I've just imported it - and discovered that the mile splits reported by the watch suffer from a bit of a rounding problem. It also brought me to a halt before I'd actually reached the five mile point, which was a bit annoying from a stat point of view, and makes my final mile look rubbish. Long story short, my pacing was actually pretty good today. On the day, I will completely ignore the split times that the watch reports, and just use the lap pace and course mile markers as a guide to how I'm doing.

Thirdly, I'm not all that pleased with the way that the HR had risen. Ideally, I would have liked it to have stayed consistent, or failing that, a bit lower than it was. But with a retrospective half an hour, and a cup of coffee, I'm willing to write a bit of that off due to the reasons already stated. In short, it hasn't taken me long to forget how tough that was, so if you could wish for a fair wind, dear reader, this thing might still be on.

  • The wind was strong and COLD today (here at least) so all things considered your run looks pretty good to me! Why does your log show HR graphs whereas mine shows Cadence? Is it to do with how your Garmin is set up? Hope Bath goes according to plan luck

  • HR needs to be looked at in 4-6 week cycles. It can go up and down for any given run - health (e.g. breathing issues!), conditions (e.g. windy!), anxiety, fatigue from previous sessions etc. If you only lost 5s per mile in a strong wind, you're doing well. 10-20s per mile for me on 5Ks that I have tried on windy day. Well done generally. :-) G

  • I reckon a wind like that would have a cost of around 15s a mile (data from Edinburgh parkrun). So a slight dip in pace/hr increase shows an increase in effort rather than a fade in performance. A few people (self included) have commented this winter on the cold winds troubling breathing: I wonder if we are getting the wrong kind of wind?
    Dvorak

  • Indeed, wind makes things very difficult. One thing I learnt early on, in races more than anything, is to arbitrage ebtween your watch and the mile/km markers to tell how you're doing in any given race. Which I also use for intervals, ie lamposts. Temperature too.....must affect you.

The running was cut a bit shorter than I'd like (no beginners, and no extra miles post long run for me), but the extra rest wasn't unwelcome, and I'm aiming to do a bit of a race pace trial tomorrow morning now. Some might say it's a little close to race day, but (a) it worked well for me pre-Bath 2013, and (b) hey, if this doesn't come off, I'm marathon training anyway, don'tcha know.

And hey, hey - we came second on this thing:

Bounceback

11:46pm, 21 Feb 2015
The boy bounced back today. We didn't make it to rugby, but he was full of beans again, and starting to get his appetite back.

We walked the dog, and watched the second Hunger Games movie - but not much besides.

I've been looking back at my last two Bath Half Marathons, to do a bit of that there visualisation.

My GPS has measured 13.24 for both events. I know lots of officially measured courses are like this - there's always about 1% added on, just to be on the safe side. But the first time it did that (2013), it really caught me out, as I thought I was on for a PB, and of course the finish line had other ideas. The second time (2014), I was just getting over a chest infection, so I was just pleased to finish.

This time, it's game on.

On the basis that I'll be running 13.24 miles, I need exactly 8:00/mile to get my PB (would be 8:05 for exactly 13.1 miles). And also working on the basis that I'd like to put a little bit in the bank, I'm going to aim for 7:55/mile. To try to measure how I'll get on, I'll be trying to do my faster run this week at 7:55/mile, and keeping an eye on my heart rate.

My 5k splits from 2013 look like this:

Split, Time, Average HR
5k 24:54 161bpm
10k 24:50 164bpm
15k 25:03 168bpm
20k 25:13 171bpm

I'll be aiming to do 5-6 miles at 7:55/mile, and what I'd like to see is whether I can keep the HR down below the 161 and 164 at the 5k and 10k stage. And if not, then I at least want to finish feeling strong.

7:55 for 6 miles would leave me with 7.24 miles to go, and the opportunity to drop back to 8:04/mile.

7:55 for 10 miles would leave me with 3.24 miles to go, and the opportunity to drop back to 8:31/mile.
7:55 for 13.24 miles would give me 1:44:49, and a 68 second PB.

I'd like that last one please.

  • You're really going for a positive split? Given your marathon training, wouldn't it be better to aim for a negative split or even pacing? Very good thinking on the distance though, I've been caught out by an elusive finish line myself, must remember your trick of calculating paces for a longer distance :)

  • By the way, that wasn't supposed to be negative about your plan, I know some people do ok on positive splits and it's inevitable that you slow down at 10-11 miles (I find), but you know yourself best. Me, I have to factor in the first mile or so being slow due to crowds and warming up. But you've got plenty of long runs in the bank, you shouldn't be too uncomfortable in the later stages cos you have that endurance (you'd hope!). I think even splits are what you should aim for :)

  • Good luck for the PB. I have to pick you up about the measurement though: organisers won't be adding on 1%. Bath is a certified course (done by one of the world's top measurers (and a past London marathon winner)). Whilst there is a "short course correction factor" the maximum a HM would be longer is 42m. • When I race, I do use a Garmin to get an idea of my current pace, but I also wear a timing watch and press the lap button at each official mile marker which gives me an accurate gauge of my race time. Dvorak's right, Hugh Jones is an official credited course measurer.
An alternative HM strategy for you could be something like 7:57/7:58 for the first few miles, and then slow down as necessary but with far less chance of blowing up, and be more likely to finish strongly. You might even end up running faster than you would otherwise.
Good luck for a Bath PB.

  • Thanks everybody :-) I have a 7:55 run planned for tomorrow, so it'll hopefully give me a useful feel for how it's going to go. Not intending to slow down in the second half of the race, it's more about understanding the contingency. • Yeah, ditto to Dv up there. The course will be 13.11 miles. The route you run (dodging round other runners, not quite racing line etc.) may be a bit longer, but the main thing is a Garmin is often out - either consistently or randomly. The one I have now (maybe my 4th or 5th Garmin) is consistent 0.1-0.2% over. Others I have had have lost distance, even where there weren't obvious obstacles like trees, buildings or mountains. Have you seen Paul The Builder's patent Garmin correction method of mile measuring? It's in one of his blogs and should really be in the Fetch Bible. I'll try and find a link to it. It is dependent on the race having accurate on course mile markers though. Does it? Good luck, sounds like you're in great shape. Give it da beanz! :-) G

Although GPS post race traces can have particular use identifying when a course is actually layed out wrong, for example the 2014 Scottish Half Marathon (other inaccurate races are available, but probably none which has ever handled its post-rsce customer relations so badly).

Barking carrots

10:15pm, 20 Feb 2015
After posting my blog last night, the boy made a further dash for the bathroom, decorating another bedroom carpet en route. I sorted him out, but then ended up sleeping in my clothes as I fell asleep on top of the duvet, as he lay under it.

At just after 5am, he woke asking for a shower, which he sometimes likes just to cool off. So all in all, we've not had the most restful time.

Having said that, we totally and utterly sat in front of the TV all day, alternately dozing off, and trying to stay hydrated.

All he's eaten today is jelly, but I hope he gets a hankering for some grub in the morning. He's in my bed again, as it's much closer to the bathroom, and doesn't involve climbing down a ladder to get out.

I did do a bit of work, putting together an email that will go out to beginners, reminding them of our programme. I've also made the smallest of starts on the mobile-friendly version of the training log.

My beginners were left to fend for themselves, and did well by all accounts. One of them even said they tend to go faster when I'm not there. Challenge accepted ;-)

And of course, no running today. Just as well really, it means I can give my hamstring a little bit of extra rest.

That's about it. Just really hoping the boy has a good night, and missing my lovely wife (check out her blog today).

Bedroom pizza

11:49pm, 19 Feb 2015
I would have posted this blog much sooner, but I've just been cleaning up a puddle of sick that my boy produced from the top bunk of his bed, onto the bedroom floor :-( I think tomorrow's plans have changed. His first sick day for about four years I think.

Anyway... here's what I was in the middle of writing...

What a very tiring, but very excellent day yesterday!

Up early to cram in some breakfast, then off for our 20 miler. I promised that I'd dissect it a bit more yesterday, now that I've got my breath back.

A direct comparison with the 18 from the previous week is a bit hard - it felt like a different animal. Firstly, it was a bit warmer - two layers felt like a lot at times, and I was tempted to take my top layer off - but I don't think the world is quite ready for me in a skin tight lime green t-shirt just yet :-)

Second, my left hamstring was a bit niggly for a large proportion of the run. This is a new thing, and has come out of nowhere. I've always had fairly tight hamstrings, but I can recall the last two times I've pulled them (in the 100m at Derby track, a month after London 2008; and playing village cricket back in 2002), so they've not really presented a problem. Katie put me through the taffy machine today, and given me instructions not to do any speedy stuff tomorrow. Hopefully this means it'll settle down.

Back to the run. As I said yesterday, we went off a bit faster. I've got mixed feelings about that, as I think it made up for the lack of hills - and we were aiming to make it a bit easier on ourselves yesterday. But the first 9-10 really breezed by, and it was actually hard to think about slowing down. The difference in pace makes it a bit harder to compare HR between the 20 and the 18 from the previous week - but there is an interesting pattern. This week the HR stays fairly consistent for the first 17 miles, and then is about 10bpm higher for the last 3. Last week, it did a similar thing, holding steady for the first 15, before going up by about 10bpm for the last 3. Both of these points roughly coincide with the point where both runs started to feel really tough. A similar thing happened in the last mile of the 16, but there's no noticeable upturn in the 14 or the 12. Is the upturn an indicator of when my body starts to employ more fat burning, as glycogen supplies are low - therefore needing more oxygen? If so, I hope it also implies that I'm pushing that point further towards the finish line!

The tiredness that comes after you've done one of these is quite special. I've been taking my refuelling very slowly, so as to avoid the stomach issues that I've had in previous weeks. So tempting to act like a human garbage disposal unit. I think it's a bit tough on my stomach *whatever* I do, but touch wood, things were ok, just a little grumbly.

After beans on marmite on toast at about 4pm, we lazed around for a bit, and got things ready for Katie's quiz. We had a great time, although I think both of us were in a bit of a daze. It was quite surreal actually. My job was to go round with the raffle tickets, and it was really very humbling to see everyone reaching into their pockets, and lobbing all sorts of big contributions into the tin. It felt strange knowing that only a small handful of the entrants would win anything... but then, it's lovely that everyone was willing to give, and to have a bit of fun with just the chance of winning.

The food was a ploughman's supper - I'm not usually very big on salad, but by this time my stomach was ready to fight - and I totally inhaled it. I even used my bread roll to mop up the leftover butter on my plate. The quiz itself was a bit of fun - but entertaining to see some folks taking it very seriously :-) And the crowning bit for me at the end of the night was seeing Katie with the microphone, doing the thank you's, and knowing how much emotional energy she'd put into it, and just how much it meant to her to have the support of the people around her.

I'll end this blog here, as I need to make a bed up on the sofa (having surrendered my bed to the boy). Toodle pip.

Top of the mountain

5:05pm, 18 Feb 2015
20 miles done :-)

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-log-view.php?id=10999801

We sped into it this week, getting to the 10 mile mark in less than 100 minutes, compared to about 103 on the 18 last week. We both struggled in the second half - maybe as a result, but we went through 18 about 6 mins quicker than last week too.

I think we've reached the point where the long runs can't quite be recovered from, before the next one comes along - everything felt quite creaky and a little sore. But now we have 10 days before our next long run (Bath Half), and a further 9 days after that before we do our next 20, so hopefully we've just about made it to the top of the mountain, and have a bit more breathing space from here on.

We're both recovering now, so we can go do the pub quiz tonight. I'll sit and chew over the run stats a bit more tomorrow.

Zzzzzzz.

Blogs get the mobile treatment

1:05pm, 17 Feb 2015
For those of you that haven't read older blogs, I've been building a mobile-friendly version of the site. I've started with an exact copy of the main website, and have been paring it back, section by section, starting with the forum last week. If you're viewing this blog on your mobile, come and have a look at the mobile version of the blog pages:

m.fetcheveryone.com

(it'll look all massive if you view it on a desktop, so get your mobile out of your pocket, now :-))

Things:
The links to write a blog, and to view your own blog, are under the big red title bar.
Buddies only blogs are highlighted in pale yellow
Favourited blogs are highlighted in pale red
When you view a blog, there's a 'Back to Blogs' link above the red title bar, and "Previous

Next" links on the right, so you can page through different bloggers.
To keep the layout simple, the comments, and the 'add comments' box are hidden behind a click - you can see these at the foot of each blog entry.
When you write a blog, the form elements should be the full width of the screen.

Questions:
1) Can you navigate it easily?
2) Obviously, there are a few features missing. Are there any I should put back?

Not directly related things:
I've adjusted the black menu bar at the top of the page, so that it's not permanently pinned to the top.
I've cut out some of the content that was popping up to the north of the menu.
When you click the menu icon (the little white bars at the top-left corner of the page), the menu slides down now, not in from the left.
I've simplified the options in the menu, so that it just links to the top-level of each category within the site.

Even more general stuff:
1) If you wander outside of the forum and blogs, it'll start to look a lot more like the regular site content (albeit with the strange new menu up top). This is because I've only done the forum and blogs.
2) If you want to report some weirdness, PLEASE make sure you say what mobile you're using, and if possible upload a screenshot to the gallery.
3) Notifications probably don't work properly yet.
4) I've no idea what to do with the home page, at the moment.

A final question:
Which section shall I work on next?

Supersonic Katie, and a marathon pace question

6:09pm, 16 Feb 2015
The Katie bit is in this week's training vLog:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/vlog

Today I was looking at my Amazon list - I tend to stick a whole bunch of stuff in my basket that I might get round to buying one day. Lots of it I probably won't, but it's good for keeping a record of books I'd like to read, or albums I'd like to buy (isn't it nice when you can buy CD's that you used to listen to, for only about a quid).

Anyway... as a result of all this, Amazon also tries to flog me 'recommended' stuff. And today, for some unknown reason, it's recommended that I buy a deerstalker hat. Aside from having previously bought some Arthur Conan Doyle (not SH), I can't imagine how it's made that connection.

Today we ran 5 miles, and by the end of mile 1, we found ourselves doing close to 9min/mile, which is a fair bit faster than we'd normally set out to do. Normally, it's either around 9:45-10min/mile for the easy/long run stuff, or it's tempo pace, which for me means about 7:30/mile. So we did the next 3 at sub-9min/mile, just because.

It turned out to be a good test. Sub-9:09 would give me a sub-4 marathon, which is something I've been vaguely wondering about. What I was hoping to see when I got home was a nice low HR for this sort of pace. And it was pretty good - I managed to get 85% of my time at less than 75% of WHR. I *think* this means that I can run at this pace without using too much glycogen. Expert input welcomed :-)

Here's the run:

  • Fat burning capacity varies between individuals and can be increased by appropriate diet and training. For a ‘typical’ male, fat burning reaches a peak at about 75% of WHR and falls to about half its peak rate by 80% WHR. Provided you develop adequate leg muscle resilience, you should be in good shape for sub-4 hours. (A specialist marathon runner would probably aim to increase fat burning capacity so that it was not far below peak even at 80% WHR – but I would think at this stage getting your legs used to long running should probably be your priority.) Good luck

Back home

7:38pm, 15 Feb 2015
Just back after a 13 hour round trip to the Isle of Wight :-)

Up at 5.30am, on the road by 6am, Portsmouth by 8.30 for the 9am ferry. Magic portal to Greggs from the Costa at the ferry terminal :-O

A quick catch up over a coffee with Katie's dad and step mum, then out into the garden to do some overdue gardening jobs. Back in for pork casserole for lunch, followed by sherry trifle :-) and a walk on the downs with their adorable dog (adorable until she ran off). Managed to watch the first half of the match :-)

Drove like Colin McCrae, as the satnav had a mental meltdown and took us along farm tracks and through every pot hole imaginable, JUST in time to board the ferry. Overheard a woman on the ferry talking about the rugby score, which was a bit annoying as I'd recorded it to watch. Then 2.5 hours of increasingly busy motorway, until here we are right now.

And the fun hasn't finished yet.

We're off to the local pub to sell raffle tickets for Katie's quiz. It's on Wednesday. If you haven't got any plans, please come along :-)

Racing parkrun ;-)

9:45pm, 14 Feb 2015
I raced parkrun today ;-)

I slowed down a bit from start to finish, but ended up with 22:39, which is a 7:19 average. It's a good starting point for the year, and something I can chomp away at, when my legs are a bit fresher :-)

Cake at Fancy, and I've got my breathing technique right. One slab of chocolate cake, inhaled :-)

The boy is fully recovered from his episode yesterday, and has reversed his decision never to run again :-)

A nice valentines dinner with Katie (steak and potatoes), and it's an early bath for both of us. Mainly 'cos we've got to be on the road for 6am tomorrow morning to catch our ferry to the IoW.

Night campers.

Unblocking the sink

10:35pm, 13 Feb 2015
A mixed bag today.

Woke myself up with a horrid dream about my boy smoking. One of those real chest thumping wake ups.

The beginners did fantastically well with the step up to week 4, and seem to be looking out for each other, which is great. The boy did well, bolstered by his friend turning up and running too. He's not far off a 5k I reckon :-)

I treated him to a hot choc from the machine at the co-op, but as we drove home, he was complaining about it being just milky. And sure enough, there didn't seem to be any chocolate in it. I put a couple of spoonfuls of powder in it when we got home, and he got stuck in.

About an hour later, he was complaining of a headache. I wondered if he was dehydrated, so gave him another drink, and a bit of calpol. But his temperature got high, and he was jettisoning clothing in that way that kids do, but still hot and teary. I suggested a shower, which brought him back to his usual self, but shortly afterwards he was complaining of a sore tum, then leapt up and puked in the kitchen sink. It was a definite help to him, but he was clearly a bit wiped out, and slept for over an hour, lying with his legs on my lap, as I read my book.

He was a bit fragile-looking when I took him back to his mums, but reports that he's feeling a wee bit better. Since doing decimals at school, he's grading his well being out of 10 (this is a common question I ask of him) to one decimal place. He's up to 8.1 now :-)

Really enjoying 'Flowers for Algernon' :-)

Start in Darkness

11:12pm, 12 Feb 2015
There was a very dubious looking green spillage on the M1 today, a few hundred yards long, with lots of police and maintenance workers walking round the edge of it and coning it off. I've just looked it up, and it was fuel and/or oil from two lorries that collided in the middle of the night. Shudder.

It's been a day with the boy today, as it's half term here. We've built Cole's Boulder Blaster - that's a Lego Ninjago thing. It fires little torpedoes, eight of the little buggers, all in the space of about half a second. All of the spears then hide somewhere, and we have to find them ALL before order is restored to the galaxy.

Beginners tomorrow, and we're pushing on with week 4, but with added kids, and corresponding hot chocolate at the cafe afterwards. It's a big step up this week. The last three weeks have all had 8-9 minutes running, but tomorrow it jumps up to 16. I think they'll do great, but it's like any run where you push yourself - you don't quite believe in it 'til you've done it. I'm really pleased that my boy is willing to join in :-)

We've also had some lovely news from Wales. My nephew has been picked as one of 125 boys from the Newport Gwent Dragons feeder sides, to go on a tour to Poland in the summer. There'll be Dragons coaches spotting talent, and a film crew. Very exciting for him, and for us watching :-)

Katie and I have recovered amazingly well after yesterday's 18 and the near-comatose mire that followed. As Katie put it, "I thought I was tired when I finished the 16, but it turns out I wasn't". We were both pretty knackered last night, but despite an early start this morning, and a bit of stiffness in my legs after being in the car for nearly 2hrs, everything is feeling about as close to normal as I would dare it to feel. A mile or two with the beginners tomorrow will be a good test.

Nearly finished 'Heart of Darkness'. Despite being only 72 pages (of very small print - it's a 'thrift' edition that cost me a quid brand new), it's been a struggle. So much of the book is about the imagery, and the analog between the journey into the mind, and the journey up the river into the deepest part of the jungle, that it's a real wade. I have to concentrate hard, keep my finger on my place, and often re-read stuff to keep a grip on what's happening.

Some times I'd like

6:19pm, 11 Feb 2015
We did our 18 miler this morning. The run is one thing, but the rest of the day is spent getting over it :-)

On the whole, it went pretty well - I'm calling it a bit of an improvement on last week's 16. Sure, it was two miles longer, and those two extra miles felt pretty tough - but I *think* that the bulk of the run felt a bit more comfortable. Our overall pace is a little slower, but we had nine short breaks within the run for various things, including traffic lights, gel/water walks, stretches, and destoning shoes. Take all that out, and the bulk of our run was in the 9:40-10:20/mile bracket. It was a little hillier overall than last week's run (175m of climb, compared to 134m last week). Overall, my HR was a bit better - it was below 135bpm for 14 out of the 18 miles today, but went up to 145-150 for the last three miles. Last week, it was only below 135bpm for 6 out of the 16 miles. I know that's a bit skewed by our walk breaks, but I'm still treating it as a positive.

Here's the run:
http://www.fetcheveryone.com/training-log-view.php?id=10975584

One thing that marathon training does is fool you into thinking that the shorter races will be much easier as a result (although right now, the thought of moving my arse off the sofa AT ALL is not a welcome one). Last night I looked up what I need to get to Bronze (60%) this year. Last year I got 59% in three distances, so it'd be good to go at least one better for 2015 :-)

Here's the times I need (taken from http://www.fetcheveryone.com/race-standards.php):

Mile = 6:29 (PB 6:02, from 2008)
5k = 22:34 (PB 21:31, from 2008, 22:03 in 2014)
5M = 37:19 (PB 36:23, from 2009, 37:38 in 2014)
10k = 47:00 (PB 46:44, from 2014!!)
10M = 1:16:55 (PB 1:19:02, from 2007, 1:19:35 in 2014)
Half = 1:42:00 (PB 1:45:57, from 2008, 1:54:27 in 2014 - boo!)
Mara = 3:31:34 (PB 4:14:59, from 2008)

The one thing that quite a few of the PB's have in common is that they're all clustered around my last marathon (VLM 2008). I'm getting ahead of myself I know, but I'm looking forward to moving down through the distances when the marathon is done. I honestly can't imagine me going particularly fast at marathon distance - maybe 9:30/mile as an absolute max. Our 20 next week will be as flat as we can manage it, which might give a bit more of an idea. I don't even know what I'm capable of, and I'm not keen to disrespect the distance. Finish it, have a good time, eat contents of goody bag (including leaflets and samples of hair care products). Done :-)

But I can just about imagine running a half marathon at 8mins/mile. And from there down, it gets a little more believable. It's exciting. And at the very least, it's a way to avoid focusing on marathon training, by thinking of it as a big block of endurance work, in preparation for the shorter stuff. I've enjoyed the tempo runs, so as the weather gets a bit more pleasant, and the super-long runs ease off, it'd be good to replace them with some intervals too. Got to make use of my track card somehow :-)

I've got some races clustered around the marathon already :-) How many of you have PB'd on the way to a marathon, but then screwed up the big one? What's the general consensus?

Bath Half - 1st March - lovely course if the wind's in the right direction.
Sandy 10 - 12th April - ditto, if the hill's in the right direction.

What would also be good is a nice 10k in mid-late May, or June. Bedford parkrun can be my 5k, until one of those comes along. For the 5 miler, there's the Myton Hospice 5 at Draycote Water, or Wellingborough 5, or Long Eaton 5.

I'd better stop right there. I've got to make it off this sofa first.

Mobile Site - Forum Section

4:55pm, 10 Feb 2015
If you're reading this on a mobile, it'd be great if you could try something out for me, and leave some feedback.

Here's the forum page of the mobile site:

m.fetcheveryone.com

It's a very cut-down version of the main forum pages. You can click the titles to go into threads, you can read and contribute to threads, and you can create threads. I've tried to make everything a bit bigger, to make it easier to navigate with fingers.

If you have a chance to look at this via your mobile, it'd be great if you could leave a comment below. Does it look ok? Are there any fonts that come which mobile you're using, incl. version (e.g. iPhone 5, etc) and maybe the browser, if it's not the default one that comes with the phone. If you can upload a screenshot to the gallery, that'd also be very useful.

If you can help me sort out the main issues, and get it working reasonably well, I can move on to the other sections of the site.

  • One thing is that zoom text to fit on my phone (Android 4.0.3, HTC default browser. Same with Firefox tho) means the avatars drop off the left, so I have to keep scrolling to see who posted each line. That's true with the standard site too though. I find serif fonts harder to read than san serif. But generally smaller, simpler etc. is better yip. Nice one. :-) G

  • It looks very clean - though I'm not sure I like the bold font for the thread titles and it's odd seeing in a serif font as the full version of the site has a sans serif font (whether on my PC or my phone). But it's much more navigable without all the header information, much easier when you can see more thread titles on one page. I'd like to have the pin back, to remind me which threads I'm following.

  • I've uploaded two screen grabs into my gallery (taken on Nokia Windows phone, I think on IE?).

The first one is showing the bar (Search if you're not logged in, shortcuts if you are) and I find it a bit intrusive that it sits in the same place on the screen even as you scroll so blocks off part of the page. I think I'd prefer to have to scroll up to this, or have it pinned to the very top rather than in the middle of the screen.
Second one shows how easy it is to swipe over to the empty space to the right which I don't think you meant to have? But it's there I think because I still have the header piece about d2 being MOTM which is wider than the column for the forum list.
In general I like how clean it is, although I'd probably stick to the browser view because my phone copes well with the full-fat version of the site. It seemed a bit slower to render as well, although that might be subjective. Something that doesn't consume data allowances would be good, if not for my avoidance of distraction when I'm supposed to be working!

All-Time Leaderboards

12:17pm, 10 Feb 2015
Well, here's a thing.

You can now look at the all-time leaderboard for most running races. Look out for the new trophy graphic on the right-hand-side of race listings.

For example, here's the leaderboard for Bath Half, with Marigold sitting pretty at the top:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/race-leaderboard.php?id=102294

You can sort the main table by time (the default), or by WAVA - just click the column titles.

I've colour coded the gender-based positioning, to make it a bit clearer - and to avoid the usual stereotype, the men are in pink, and the women are in yellow. Take that, gender-stereotyping!

There are also some summary stats that show you the number of Fetchies that have recorded a time at the race, and the number of PB's and SB's that have happened there. As it stands, the PB/SB stats should be taken with a pinch of salt, because they don't take into account how many previous attempts the runners have made at that distance. So for example, lots of first-timers might get VLM PB's, and make the numbers look great. I'm looking into a better way to measure this.

Another limitation to mention - it's based on exact matches of the race name. So if it's 'Wokingham Half Marathon' one year, and 'Wokey Half' the next, it won't pick up the variations. Stuff like hyphens, race year, sponsors name, etc, will all make this problem happen. If you spot a problem like this, send me some feedback.

No running for me today. Last week, we both ran the day before our 16, and it may well have contributed to it feeling tough. As we've stepped up to 12 and 14, we've always felt like there's been a bit of adaptation i.e. when passing 10 miles on our 12, we felt ok; when passing 12 on our 14, we felt ok. On our 16, we felt pretty rough from about 11 onwards I'd say. It's always hard to strip away all the variables, but taking a rest day beforehand seems to make a lot of sense. Followers of my vLog may be pleased to know that my left nipple has grown back :-)

Onwards!

We need new batteries for our door bell. The 'Ding' is still crisp and intrusive, but the 'Dong' is a poor follow-up.

Here's the weekly training vLog, including snow, hot water bottles, an indecisive tiger, a dog running in circles, some beginners, and a word from our new sponsor :-)

4 miles this morning, with Katie and the dog - all felt pretty good, but I'm going through a knackered phase now. Maybe scrambled eggs and bacon for lunch takes quite a bit of afternoon digesting.

Sword fighting

10:20pm, 8 Feb 2015
There's a 16 mile 50mph average speed camera thing on the M1 at the moment. How come some people sail through it at whatever pace they choose? Are they completely unaware, or are they in some sort of secret gang?

Today the boy and I ran with some of the beginners, which was nice. He may even be happy to repeat the experience :-) Maybe.

We sat round a lot, did a bit of homework (ordering decimals), smashed some wood up with a hammer in the back garden and made swords, watched You've Been Framed, ate pancakes and muffins, and not a lot else really.

This evening, after a lovely tea, we watched Hobbit 2: Citizens on Patrol, and now it's now. TTFN.

PB Attempts

2:31pm, 7 Feb 2015
As you might know, I like looking at all the data from the training log, trying to find patterns and useful insights into training.

One of the problems this exercise has always faced is the fact that people race for all sorts of reasons, and not always for the purposes of beating a time.

So to help clear a path through the murky water, I've put together a simple tick list, whereby you can indicate which races you tried to PB in:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/pbattempt.php

If you could fill it in, and *ALSO* push other people on your favourite threads to do the same, we should hopefully get a useful set of data.

Rugby = damnit. But on the upside, I watched the boy playing this morning, and he was flinging himself around like a lunatic. Enjoy your time in the sun England ;-)

Duct tape and WD40

1:48pm, 6 Feb 2015
Beginners this morning :-) I'd better say nice things about them, because it seems they read my blog :-O But it's easy to say nice stuff really, because they're all putting in lots of effort. Our run-walk plan now has two three minute chunks of running in it, and they seem to be very cheerful about the whole thing. If you've ever thought about leading a group of noobs, I'd say an emphatic "do it" :-)

Home for a bit, then time for me to do my tempo run, so I trotted off to the canal path.

The water was full of large shards of ice that had reformed to make one amazing sheet that made it all look so still. In the first mile, I saw a swan, standing on it - then the ice broke under it, and it plopped into the water. At first I thought it had just embarrassed itself, but as I got closer, I realised that it was breaking a path. I've seen swan paths before now, but never seen one actually do it. After landing back in the water, it started thrusting its chest at the ice ahead, cracking it and mashing it with its beak. It's doubled the list of things that I know a swan can break:

1) a mans arm
2) ice

The run was good :-) Here's how my tempo runs have been progressing, since I started doing them:

Week 1 [3 miles] = 7:46, 7:38, 7:53 (average = 7:46)
Week 2 [3 miles] = 7:39, 7:38, 7:44 (average = 7:40)
Week 3 [3.86 miles] = 7:35, 7:31, 7:26, [7:26] (average = 7:30)
Week 4 = CUTBACK WEEK
Week 5 [4 miles] = 7:27, 7:24, 7:26, 7:18 (average = 7:24)

My HR was higher this week though, perhaps because I pushed it from the start, or possibly because it followed on the heels of a 16, rather than a 14. My plan for the rest of the month is to gradually increase the distance of the tempo run, and I keep saying that I will slow down as I do that (7:40 is where I need to be with them). As it stands, that's the fastest 4 miles I've *ever* run, outside of my 5 mile PB (7:14/mile), which was June 2009, and the downhill 10k at Aberdare - so the signs are good. Speaking of which, the 16 this week is also the longest I've run since VLM 2008 :-O I'm only really doing tempo runs at the moment to make marathon pace feel easier, but it's left me feeling quite optimistic about what I can do off the back of marathon training, with enough duct tape and WD40.

I don't mean to be bragging about getting a bit faster, but I'm genuinely pleased. The bit I like the best though is that it backs up the idea that you don't need to do all your miles faster, in order to get faster [even if it's only my own personal faster]. Since the start of the year, I've run 131 miles, which is in itself a fairly big increase - but only 16 of those (12%) have been at tempo/fast pace. The other 115 come in at just under 10mins/mile.

Looking forward to tonight's match :-O It's a good job they've left the roof off, otherwise the sospan might boil over. I hope we win, but it's impossible to be confident when playing England. Optimistic, yes definitely. Breathlessly so.

Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants

10:24pm, 5 Feb 2015
I overcame the cake-based tum soreness in time for us to go to Bedford Pavilion Supper Club yesterday evening. It was nice - a rustic sort of atmosphere - two long tables, so you end up chatting to the people you're sitting next to. We knew our fellow diners, so it was very chatty. The meal was a huge lasagne, with two slices of garlic baguette, and a salad laced with anchovies, bacon and cheese. I also had a can of coke. Being my first major meal since the 16, I absolutely inhaled it. Do you know where this is going, reader? Do you want to punch me?

We had a nice giggly time walking back through the park by torchlight, and we were all in quite high spirits at bed time - but my tum decided that the earlier business was unfinished, so I spent timeless wandering twisting sleepless hours with my knees up to my chest, and a dull throbbing in my guts. The dog started woofing to go out just before 4am, but that turned out to be a bit of a blessing. Without wanting to overshare, we both got what we needed.

So today I've been feeling a tiny bit battered still, but we had a nice dog walk this morning (still picking the burrs out of the dog's fur though). In work terms, dear Fetchies, I've been a bit less than productive, with my chief contribution being to pull some images together on the 'Games' page, to make it look a bit more interesting: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/games.php . I have also been doing some more work on the mobile site, although you might not notice any major differences just now.

School pickup was a bit early today, as the kids were doing a group dance / sing to 'Let It Go'. My boy took a few choruses before letting it go, but he was flinging his arms around with everyone else by the end, and he was near enough to the fake snow machine to get some on him. Homophones homework tonight - he had to make up a paragraph using as many as he could. He sore a girl with a flour in her hare. Then spellings. Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants.

Beginners group tomorrow (no ice, thank goodness), and then (all being well) I'm aiming to fit in my tempo run for this week :-) :-O It'll be my third and last session of the week, but will also take me up to about 36 miles in the last 7 days, which will very much do for now, thank you.

My sister got 70% in her psychology essay - she's gonna take the world by storm :-)

Lessons

3:46pm, 4 Feb 2015
I did get a sore stomach yesterday evening :-( I was chaining hot water bottles until the pain finally subsided around bed time.

This morning I woke up feeling pretty good, just a bit tired - and got into my kit for our 16 miler.

The first four miles absolutely whizzed by, but then we turned into the northerly wind, and a few unforgiving hills, and it turned into a bit of a struggle - certainly felt like harder going than the 14 from 2 weeks ago. We'd both run yesterday, and I think that played quite a part in taking a bit of the spring out of our legs.

That said, the pace was pretty good, and the HR stats look a little bit more relaxed than last time, which is a good sign.

I started off trying to do the recovery sensibly, with just some chocolate milk to begin with, but then made the mistake of remembering that we'd planned to go to the coffee shop. So I ended up shovelling a slice of Victoria sponge down my face. Please look away now if you're easily offended, or one of my parents.

TW*T!

I'm now here with a hot water bottle clamped to my stomach, and a twisted knot of discomfort in my stomach.

Lessons:

1) that rule about making sure you're well rested before a long run? Follow it.
2) Cake (with regret, but especially with about a litre of fresh cream) is not the best way to help my body refuel.

In some much better news, my LiRF article is on the Guardian website today :-)

Shoe horning

5:26pm, 3 Feb 2015
Well... I *was* going to do a tempo run today, honest, but then everything got covered in snow. So the plans have changed - I went out and did an easy-paced 5 miler, then tomorrow we'll do our 16 miler (was going to be Thursday), giving me the possibility of doing my tempo run on Friday, after I've led my beginners group.

I've made the mistake of throwing food into my face at break-face speed, since running - I hope I won't pay the price later :-/

This morning I did some work to integrate the Checkpoints local leaderboard into the rest of the game - you should be able to see your local board by going here:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/checkpoints

The rectangle on the map outlines all the checkpoints that contribute to that particular leaderboard. You should see your local Fetchies on the list, and if you're on the list, you should be highlighted. The leaderboards don't show anonymous players btw. You can also investigate other areas - just type the name of the place you want to look at. The Regent's Park square is quite pretty, and I'm the

This afternoon, I spent a couple of hours working on the mobile site. If (and only if) you're willing to be kind, you can have a look at it here:

m.fetcheveryone.com

(just in case that link gets obscured, it's m.fetcheveryone.com)

You won't notice a massive difference - the last few hours have been purely about trimming down the header, and shoehorning the menu into those three little horizontal stripes in the top left corner. None of it is especially pretty right now :-)

Once I get the header and menu into a decent state, I'll be tackling individual page layouts. If you look at the forum, you can see I've made a start on simplifying the list of threads. The idea is to work through the pages (forum, training, race listings, gallery, blogs etc), starting with the most-used (tempered slightly by a bit of personal preference regarding what I feel like doing, with a dash of 'what's easiest', and a teaspoon of 'meh').

I'm off now to cook some tea, and read my book, and call my boy, and cwch my wife, and all that good stuff.

Pip pip.

OMGwlad, I keep remembering that the Six Nations starts this Friday! :-) V. excited about that.

  • Sorry, no, the redirect is my phone (most phones? or mobile browsers?) There's a setting in Chrome, Firefox and the native one for "Use desktop version of site" or something, which by default is not checked, so it will look for an "m.xxx.com" version, if available (don't know exactly how?). So I got m.fetcheveryone.com and couldn't work out why it behaved differently to my other browser (which is set to show desktop only). Phew! :-) G

Big February Project

2:22pm, 1 Feb 2015
Sooooooooooo..... six miles today, putting me up to 20 for the week. Win :-)

Run aside, it's been a bit of a lazy one today. I woke up early, let the dog out, brought tea and toast back to bed, and clung on to it for as long as possible :-)

The 16 on Thursday is feeling a bit daunting at the moment, but I know that it'll be ok. A new route is needed :-)

By the way, if you're up for running over 400 miles in February, possibly snapping yourself irreparably in the process, you might want to sign up for this: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/ruyd - but it's your own fault if you do.

Showered, walked the pooches, got veg and pudding and petrol from the supermarket. And now I'm here, semi-comatose on the sofa. I *have* been playing around with those jazzy menus that you see on mobile sites (you press the little menu button, and it slides in from the side). I've worked out what I'm aiming to do this week, and I've set aside a big chunk of time to work on the mobile site. Let's call it my Big February Project :-)

Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.
