I Am Groot!

10:22pm, 28 Nov 2014
The boy and I watched Guardians of the Galaxy on DVD this evening.

If you've not seen it, and if you've got some kid left in you, I promise you'll love it :-)

Then it was the inevitable bed time. The boy decided to try to pin me down, and I'd *almost* got to the point where I was winning, when a knee came out of nowhere, and there was a thud, a split-second of bright light, and a shock wave. I think my eyeball maybe flipped round for a brief second to point at my brain :-)

He was mortified, particularly as my eye has fattened up in pretty short order. Aside from the initial few seconds, and the sad boy, I found it surprisingly funny.

Rave safe kids.

Slightly Dismal Friday

11:13am, 28 Nov 2014
1) I've got a bit of a cold
2) It's a bit miz outside.
3) I've reduced everything in the shop to £19.99 in the hope of shifting a few bits and bobs
4) No-one's bought anything yet.
5) There's a load of dishes that need doing.
6) McGoohan suggested a better blog title.

On the plus side, the PTA have just sent out their newsletter advertising the school christmas fayre, and I'm already fancying a hot turkey roll.

"Dear Ian,

On behalf of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Running we would like to invite you to attend afternoon tea in Thames Pavilion at the Houses of Parliament on 2nd December.

The newly formed All Party Parliamentary Group on Running has joined forces with Run Group, which brings together multiple players from across the world of running, to encourage top politicians, media figures and business leaders to play a part in creating a country where more people run more often. Running is an accessible, effective and cheap activity, and we want to help people make positive choices that enable them to enjoy running at any level. Specifically, we are seeking ways to develop running within the workplace, as part of a national campaign being led by Run Group.

At the launch you will be able to discuss with Run Group members and stakeholders how we can promote running. There will also be the opportunity to sign up on a pledge board to commit to do at least one thing in 2015 to get more people running more often.

We hope to see you at Parliament on the 2nd December. More information and the invitation is attached, and we will circulate final details nearer the date. In the meantime, should you have any questions, or would like to meet to discuss this campaign and how you can help, please email us.

Can you please RSVP by Monday 24th November.

Yours sincerely,

Alistair Burt MP
Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Running

David Moorcroft
Chair of Run Group"

  • Woohoo, that sounds fab! What an honour and an opportunity to influence etc. Get stuck in. Are you going to ask for Fetchie input?

    - reduced price at running tracks (our council charges £4.80 - given that one would normally only do it for 1 hour and ideally should be every week, that's a big barrier to training)
    - reduced health and life insurance for commitment/proof of running (any sporting activity) and not smoking, not being obese etc.
-subsidised/reduced cost health/recovery services e.g. physio, massage etc. for commitment/proof of running (any sporting activity) this one is a double win - encourages people in and keeps them fit. Probably cheaper than fixing them afterwards on NHS.

All def cheaper than inactivity leading to problems in old age. etc. :-) G

He helps at the 'Sandy 10' and other events - and I think it says a lot for his support of the sport that rather than insisting on being at the finish handing out the medals, he is quite happy to turn up at 7:30 in the morning to do car park duty.

Free Daps! aka Test GORE-TEX® footwear this winter!

12:35pm, 18 Nov 2014
The GORE-TEX® footwear elves have given me the opportunity to en-dap-ulate two of you :-)

If you're:

1) training for a spring marathon (any, doesn't have to be as long as London etc etc),
2) willing to do a weekly blog about your training
3) willing to receive two free pairs of trainers (one before Christmas, one after)

then do me a blog today titled "I want free daps", and say why you should get picked. The trainers will be GORE-TEX® ones - I've got a pair of Columbias that are GORE-TEX®, and genuinely they are really good at keeping the water out when we're stomping around on wet grass.

I'll conflab with the GORE-TEX® elves, and we'll pick two winners :-)

More chances for VMLM entries

1:59pm, 14 Nov 2014
Did you know that Fetch also has a UKA registered running club? And that this year, we've been given three club places for the London marathon?

The club is (quite understandably) called Fetch Everyone Running Club, and it's currently £20 for a year's membership. You get £2 off lots of race entries, and also the chance to be in our London marathon ballot. If you want to be considered for the latter, you need to join up BEFORE the end of November.

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/ferc

(Your membership fees are partly paid to UKA, and aside from a few stamps and envelopes, we donate the rest to charity.)

  • Oh how excellent. Having entered the ballot and commented on your blog to win, I've realised that each time I didn't get a place I actually felt relief and what this means is - I need to stop entering LOL. Hope someone gets the place and is chuffed to bits :-)

Marathon Talk

2:18pm, 13 Nov 2014
On Tuesday I had a Skype interview with Tom Williams from Marathon Talk. He was a nice bloke, and I felt like it went well. I've listened back to it today, and I really struggle when it comes to listening to myself mutter and mumble, so it was a bit of a cringe-fest. I hear all my stock words that mean "my brain is thinking of what to say next", and of course I think about all the things I probably should have said :-)

If you like running chat and / or you want to hear me chops away for about 50 minutes, then here's the link:

traffic.libsyn.com

(if you just want to hear my bit, skip forward to about 1hr08mins)

If you want to know more about Marathon Talk (I'd recommend it) here's their Facebook page:

I think the odds were a lot betterer than the big ballot.
