LN - which is your favourite, then? This is my favourite (but I haven't read them all).

"Book club at its best" - that's an interesting thought. Is it because we can't interrupt one another? Or are there loads of online book clubs of which the same could be said?

I don't know of any other online book clubs. There's the Radio 4 one which probably has a forum I guess. I have never been in a 'real life' book club but people who are tell me that discussion seems to move on v quickly from the book to other topics. |

Which doesn't happen here because there are plenty of other threads for discussion of other things. (or am I already discussing other things? Than "Complicity", I mean?) |

I've found real-life book clubs to be very snooty around these parts. I tried to join a few but was told they were full. One club even said I had to have a published piece of work. None of the other clubs offered to put me on a waiting list, even though it was one out, one in. This really put me off as it's not very inclusive. It's not snooty at all on here.

That's incredible. I've never tried to join a book club (apart from this one) and now I probably never shall. Though a friend of mine started one in her locality. Maybe you could do that, Red Squirrel? A book club for the non-snooty?

I've managed to obtain and read Complicity. On the whole I enjoyed it. I got off to a slow start but then it became easier to read. Lots of description of the violence in the murders but this I feel was necessary in that Andy was fitting the punishment to the crimes. What I didn't like were the gratuitous sex scenes. Yes, we needed to know that Cameron and Yvonne were having a torrid relationship but there was no need for pornographic descriptions. Perhaps they were included to keep the seriously sex starved reading. I'd not read any Iain Banks books before but often thought I needed to. Now, however, I feel that I can take them or leave them - I'm in no rush to read another. I shall award 8 out of 10 for a good story. |

I think you're right, Unity. About the pornographic descriptions being included to keep the sex starved reading. Or if not actually sex starved, at least those with such jaded palates that nothing less would keep them alert. And yet I don't know. Perhaps they were necessary, to emphasise how devastating it was for Cameron when Yvonne dropped him like a hot brick when her husband actually needed her (at this distance I've forgotten the husband's name).
