Dear All

Thank you for signing up to join us this weekend at the Bells & Whistles Race Festival in Dover. This email should give you all the information you need with regards the course, facilities and timings for the day but of course if you have any questions please doo feel free to let us know.

I’m pleased to say final preparations are all in hand, and we’re gearing up to welcome you all on either Saturday or Sunday morning, or possibly both!

Race registration will take place in Race HQ at the Clock Tower at the base of the Prince of Wales Pier. There is plenty of pay & display parking available in the area at both the Dover Marina Swingbridge Car Park (where Enterprise cars are – charges from £1.20 for 1 hour up to £7.40 for 12 hours) and at De Bradelei Wharf shopping centre. In addition parking is plentiful on the seafront itself (Marine Parade, Dover CT17 9BU – link to DDC parking page at the bottom of this email). Registration will begin from 8am on both days and this is where you will collect your number – those of you running both days please hold onto your number for Day 2.

I have had to revise the course slightly due to some essential works taking place on the seafront to replace the steel groynes that have reached the end of their life. They are being replaced with large boulder type groynes and as a result a section of the promenade is inaccessible. This means that the loop you will be running is shorter than originally planned, but I hope you all understand. We have a duty of care to all of you out there, your safety is a key concern and I can’t have you running through that area. So, the course will be once up and down the Prince of Wales Pier, followed by 16 loops of the seafront and Pier finishing as you run down the Pier and in through the gantry to collect your medal.

The 10k will consist of 4 full loops of the shortened route.

There is no chip timing, your loops will be manually counted – please ensure your race numbers are on your front and clearly visible.

There will be one drinks station stocked with 330ml sports cap bottles of water and nibbles such as sweets, crisps and jaffa cakes. We also hope to have coke on the day too.

Toilets will be available at the Café on the end of the Pier, seafront public toilets (pay per use) and we should also have 3 portaloos positioned in the Dover Harbour Board staff car park in Cambridge Terrace.

You will be able to leave your bags in the Clock Tower if you wish – please note this is not an official ‘bag drop’ arrangement – more that if you wish to leave your bags there then you may do so at your own risk and we accept no responsibility for them, but we will set aside a corner of the downstairs of the building for this purpose.

Timings are as follows:
8am – marathon registration
8.50am – marathon race brief
9am – marathon start
10am – 10 k registration (Saturday only)
10.50am – 10k race brief (Saturday only)
11am – 10k start (Saturday only)

Presentations for the top three placed males and females for each event will take place around 1.15 – 1.30 on both days.

And don’t forget, the clocks go forward this weekend so it’s one less hour in bed! ;-)

Vixx Thompson from Kinetic Lifestyle has very kindly agreed to join us for the weekend – he will be offering sports massage and taping in the upstairs of the Clock Tower at a charge of £10 for 20 minutes. Vixx was recently on site for the last 2 days of the Enigma Running 7 Marathons in 7 Days series and received some glowing reports about his magic hands J

The Café on the Pier and the seafront kiosks will be open throughout the day for your supporters to get snacks and drinks, and Cullins Yard on Cambridge Terrace have come up trumps with some great deals for our runners - marathon participants receive FREE soft drinks, coffee or tea over the weekend, and groups in excess of 1 person will receive 1 free main meal on evidence of marathon participation over the weekend. Both Riverside Catering who operate the café and kiosks and Jim at Cullins Yard have been fantastically supportive and we owe them a big vote of thanks J

We will have some of the sticks of rock that were created for the event on sale over the weekend in return for a donation - we have taste tested and it's a bit nice..... the things we do for our runners lol!!

Some of you will remember buying some raffle tickets, for which the prize was an entry to the Giant's Head Marathon in June plus a hoody, kindly donated by our fabulous friends at White Star running. We're pleased to confirm the winner of this is Martin Hughes - congratulations Martin! In addition we also have 2 bottles of Johnny Walker as runners up prizes, congratulations Tinu Ogundari and Louise Ayling :-)

Finally, we have to say a big thank you to all the organisations that have supported us in order to be able to stage this event to raise funds for The Brathay Trust – White Star Running and Enigma Running for their help and support both logistically and in an advisory capacity (basically they've helped the Race Director retain her sanity!!), Paul and Trudie Dewar of the Stan Laurel Inn, Ulverston for their sponsorship of the personalised rock in the goody bags, and very importantly Dover Harbour Board for their permissions to use the land, their help with promoting the event and for the time and involvement they have provided through some of their members of staff.

A major thanks also to our marshals for the weekend, all of whom are volunteering their time and to Margate Ambulance service for providing the medical cover.

And finally, a massive thanks to all of you for entering – we’ve raised some much needed funds for The Brathay Trust and here’s to a fabulous weekend of running.

See you there

Karen
