I saw my friend's rescue last night. She never stops talking and is a total attention whore. A series of gentle whines and squeaks ensue and it's not long before she's on her back on the floor awaiting tummy scratches. V sweet. There were 4 boys at my friend's house having a sleepover, so she was doing the rounds all evening.

We went to the All About Dogs event yesterday - which was brilliant. I may have to put it all in a blog there was so much stuff - but we had a go at agility, fastest recall (we were in second place behind a professional agility dog for pretty much all day until two greyhounds beat us to take second & third place). We weren't placed in any of the Scruffts classes (the finals of which are judged at Crufts) but I can only assume the judges for that didn't have a clue ;-) although one was a lady from the East Anglia Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club so I had expected better of her ;-)

We were second in 'Rear of the Year' (the dog's not mine!) which was essentially dog with the waggiest tail. Wanda's tail did not stop wagging the whole time but the winner (who was less waggy IMHO) had tied a ribbon on her dog's tail and hence took the prize.

A great day, although we did spend a fortune.... a new padded harness for running was one of our purchases.... but try as she might I refused to buy a cani-X belt from the same saleslady... although I did promise her I might buy one next year... :-)

You were quite obviously ROBBED of the Rear of the Year. but apart from that, and the other obviously BLIND judging that took place it sounds like a fab day.

There's a similar event on in Hackney soon - and I'm sorry we're not at the stage of taking Jess to the London flat yet. That's as maybe - I'm so glad you had such a good time - and Wanda sounded really happy, which means that socialisation wise she's doing very well.

:-)

I'd call that cheating, drawing attention to the tail.

Incidentally Helegant is correct - GSDs are notoriously vocal with a VERY wide range of sounds. Unlike Squirrel's friend's rescue Jess' never ending conversation is not all about attention seeking. Sometimes it is - but she also chunters to herself, and yes 'sings' . (LAWKS!) and her exctied noises are a wondrous thing to behold. The let everyone know how upset I am noises ARE piercingly loud and attention seeking.

She knows 'shush' and the finger to lips signal. But sometimes just chooses to shush long enough for you to say 'good shush!' then she's off again.

Another thing - D2 agreed - is that they DO like the last word!

Raffo sometimes says, 'it's a good job you are beautiful Jess, because you really are an Ungrateful Hound and a Terrible Pet.'

Proud owner moment this morning as we had a group of people in for breakfast.

Jet, locked in his room, was scrabbling at the door, and the assembled crowd all asked for him to be let into the kitchen with them. I was worried that he would bounce everyone but he didn't. He came in, ran round the legs of all present and sat in his 'please give me some of your bacon' very best behaved pose (unsuccessfully - all had been told not to sneak treats to him), and then sat down quietly. Wow!

Both Mr and I were slightly stunned at this display of 'good-dog'gery, but then realised that we only see the small increments in training, but he has actually come quite a long way. Big grin here :-)

Don't be stunned... you and Mr have done lots of work with Jet. He has never sounded anything less than delightful - but 'controlled' bounce is a big achievement for all concerned.

Gold stars and gold bones to the Helegant household! :-)

Poor Teddy, I think he has kennel cough. No idea where he may have got it but he's off to the vets today at 4:30. We had a frustrating time yesterday with the insurers and the emergency vet, basically neither wanted to say whether kennel cough was an emergency or not - "assessed on a case-by-case basis sir". I felt bad as it seemed we were avoiding having to pay the emergency fee when Teddy may be in a bad way. I think if he was obviously listless then we would have gone, however he doesn't really seem much different to his normal self so I think we did the right thing in the end. I even took him out for a walk in the evening, and made multiple road crossings to keep out of other dogs' way.

Well done to Jet! We like to think that Teddy is just nuts and so will always mob people to a certain extent. The truth is more probably that we haven't done much about that aspect of his behaviour!
