Having injured my ankle two weeks after running my marathon, I have done NO running for 6 weeks. I went for a run today - meh. Ankle is NOT happy. So I'm not happy either. I did about 2.5 miles in total. Reasonable pace but my lungs! I can't believe that it was just two months ago that I ran a marathon. So I think the start of my Beach training will be on the bike.

I ended up not running for 4 weeks post marathon and found the first few runs really hard. I thought I'd lost all my fitness. But, it's not taking me long to get it back again. Hope the recovery goes well sherry.

So far I had a week of nothing post marathon apart from some very long shifts at work and then a two weeks of holiday in Lanzarote. The first week I jogged a weekly mileage of 17 miles and felt great whilst doing so. The Monday of second week I was mentally and physically shattered. I listened to my body and rested and relaxed. Now back training gently with Maffetone method.

There's a book. Started reading it, but it didn't grab me. Must finish it some time.

It's based on heart rate. He maintains you must develop an aerobic engine before introducing anaerobic training and that without self imposed heart rate limits we all train anaerobically without even knowing it. This can lead to breakdown in form of injury and overtraining syndrome. Don't buy a book, his formula is online. Phil Maffetone

About This Thread

Maintained by DiscoSteve
Right, by popular demand (as in, at least 2 people thought it was an ok idea) we're expanding into a 'second-or-more-time marathonist at some point in the future' thread. Have left the first timers up for posterity (although deleted any that we didn't have a result for, let me know if I have exterminated you in error).

I think we also need a motivational quote from the more experienced marathoneer a la Fitz's 'Eyes on the prize!', answers on a postcard.
