Regardless of what you decide re. the injury, I would say it's perfectly feasible to run a marathon on the long runs you have done IF you've been doing the hard shorter runs inbetween AND if you have got your fueling / rehydration strategy right. I know I'm slightly out of kilter on this one - my longest run before my first marathon was only 15 miles because of illness in March when I missed a big chunk of training. Having said that, on the day itself, I accepted that I was running to finish, not running as a race.
I hope your physio can help and that you make the right decision for you. |

As long as you set your goals and expectations right, I agree with Sherry. I had a knee issue and then a twisted ankle 10 days before the race, and I survived! I knew I wasn't going to set the world on fire with my time anyway, having missed training in Feb and with all the bad weather so I ran sensibly with the mindset of enjoying the day and it was great.
Hope the physio session goes well. |

GFB - totally agree with what everyone above has said. Assuming the physio gives you the all clear to run I'm sure you'll be fine. It's a matter of pacing it right. I tore my calf 6 weeks before Manchester and didn't run again until the day. It may be that you could swim or cycle? Whatever you decide, really hope it goes well

Thanks all,
I'll call the physio in the morning and get in to see her asap. Just remembered that I still have gym membership which I haven't used for a couple of months as I've been running outside all the time so may well get on the bike after seeing the physio. I'll keep you all updated. Gary |

Whoop whoop, I've been to the physio and she has diagnosed a very tight ITB. She gave me some very deep tissue massage and a series of exercises to do before I run. I'm also booked in for a sports massage 8 days before the marathon, and 7 days afterwards. I haven't run since Sunday but will go out for my weekly run with the club with a spring in my step knowing that I don't have to defer my marathon place.
My only issue now is how to pace myself on the day. |

That all sounds very positive. Enjoy (tee hee) the massage.

Went for my first run since the big one today, took me 9 days to face lacing up again. Realised that a week of stuffing my face with anything I fancy 'cos I ran a marathon' leaves you somewhat sluggish hehe!
