My run later today will be a hard run irrespective of HR because it'll be a 2hr+ glycogen-guzzler. I won't wear the HRM (though I do plan to start using it again, to see what numbers correlate with various effort levels). I know what level of perceived effort I can sustain for that time on a training run.

It's just a little more relaxed than TmR would like it to be :P

mine will be a steady run for about 90 mins but I dont expect HR to stay below 70% for that length of time. Did a tempo-ish run with the club last night (75%) so with my new method of training I am allowing my HR to go a bit above 70% since yesterday was not a true hard 85% run

Just posting 5 miles at 154 bpm = 68% at 11.05 mins/mile - 30 sec a mile faster than the same route last week, sub 11 mins here we come. I'm lovin' it....

Nice one icemaiden

Symptom of being tired and having a stressful day tonight - 8 miles, bang on 70% average (ie a bit grey!), 9:50 pace. That's some 30-40 seconds slower than the norm. Hmm!

Fatigue and stress do that to me too, Hendo :(

I enjoyed tonight's run. Kept the effort-level very easy and the splits varied from 9.45 to 9.05 depending on the ups and downs (which, from HRM days, would have been around 77-78%WHR). TmR and Brumliz were very patient with my sluggish pace, so a few miles before the end I rewarded them with a couple of little accelerations to around 8.30mm followed by a general stepping-up-a-gear :)

Well done IceMaiden. Sounds like we're at a similar level. My best is 11:05 at 68% and desperate to break the 11 min barrier. I'll race ya! See who gets there first!

I'm loving it too. Done a couple of tempos this week and really looking forward to my sub 70% on Friday.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
