Big Black Mountains Challenge

Hanneke Don't even think about betting... it is a 10 mile fell race with about 1500 metres of ascent in it :-)
Was that TOUGH! You have 3 routes, and us not knowing the routes in advance, I choose the shortest of approx 16 kms (garmin says 16.75). This involved two ascents and descents onto two different mountain ridges, which makes it extremely tough! The other, longer routes stay on the ridge...B route of 27 km next year and who knows the 44kms one the year after? Anyway, wind, storm, rain, sun, hail, more rain and sun at the finish... 2.33.52 I did it in, had hoped for about 2 hours, but the wind, muddy going and extra ascent and descent (not runnable for steepness) made me slower. Ah well, in mountain running being safe and nagivating properly is as important as being relatively fast. Had to stop at every checkpoint while they assessed my level of fitness and if I was ok to proceed! Was also carrying a 3kg backpack on my back with water, food, emergency stuff, waterproofs and all that. Wore a l/s top 3/4 tights and waterproof shell all the time, as well as my trusty NYM cap. Needed the hood of my top to stop the wind from blowing my ears off and had gloves on in the wind along the ridge... a toughie, but very well organised and pleasant event. Well done Longtown Mountain Rescue, who have by the way recruited me to their ranks :-) [ascent and descent to come] FELL PONIES, Black Mountains MBO 2:33:52 33.21
