Now... the cycle began well enough. I was pretty happy - I have been excited for ages to get back out on the tri bike in a race, but this joy only lasted for 5km... after that the road surface got bad and the road became less flat and more straight uphill for about 5km... I was probably going too fast at this point.

After 10km there is a left turn and it is hilly for a few km, both downs and ups. You get halfway through the lap and then it becomes more downhill than up and then the last 7km is much flatter straight down to the beach.

Lap 2 was much the same and I think my splits for these two laps were pretty even. The third lap was slightly slower, in particular the last 7km were into a headwind that had been developing throughout the morning.

The course was much harder than I remember and not at all suitable for pace on the tri bike, but I was still 15 minutes quicker than last year. It will be interesting to see how I go on the flatter, better course at Melbourne...
