I'm running but going slow and taking it easy. The most difficult thing running with my last pregnancy was learning to adapt as my pelvis shifted. I tripped over my feet quite a lot!

Re: running in pregnancy - I count myself pretty lucky as I was able to carry on running throughout pregnancy to a certain extent. I stopped for a couple of weeks early on after some bleeding but started gently again once things had settled down. I didn't race at all as I felt the temptation to push it too hard was too much. I stuck to running less far, less fast and less often than I was used to, and later on, 'running' was more of a jog-walk, just so that mentally I still felt I had 'been for a run'! I know not everyone can or feels comfortable running in pregnancy though. I think I've got some web-links from an obs-gynae friend about exercise in pregnancy I can look up if that's helpful?

Thanks so much everyone, for the welcomes and the running advice. It seems that pretty much everyone else was told it was safe to continue running by their doctor...except me! Which is what is making me so uneasy about it, even though I wasn't given a reason any more in depth than "not disturbing things in there."

Special K - any articles etc. would be very gratefully received, thank you.

When is normal to have your first midwife appointment? As this is something I will ask my midwife about (exercising etc.) but was told not to phone up to get referred for an appointment until I was about 7 weeks. Is that the norm?

lambkin - it's nice to hear you are running. I really hope you are managing to enjoy each day of your pregnancy so far. I was so sorry to hear about the loss of your little boy x

athleticsweekly.com is a useful summary of running in pregnancy - well it's one of the articles I read on behalf of Special*K anyway!

I got referred by the doctor straight away, although there was a long wait for a non-emergency appointment at the surgery so I wasn't seen by him until I was 8 weeks (and I was a bit slow on the uptake about actually being pregnant!)

I think I got an appointment through the post 2 weeks later for the week after that - so on 11 weeks. I got my midwife & scan appointment in the post on the same day.

Thinking about it it was the midwife who said I could carry on exercising. My Doctor didn't say anything except take folic acid & vitamin d.

After 13 weeks of no symptoms at all I spent the end of last week having that wiped out feeling. I spent pretty much all of Friday & Saturday in bed asleep. Not ill or feeling tired but I couldn't stay awake, if that makes sense. We're doing some decorating at home and I slept right through the artex being scraped off the ceiling right underneath me and two shelves being put up metres from my head!

Thankfully that cleared by Sunday and I'm feeling back to normal now. Looking forward to a run tonight, in fact :-)

Thanks for the article Stuart. It's good to know that the breathlessness and stuff I've been getting sometimes is due to a few different normal reasons and not because I'm just getting too heavy to run!

I'll try and dig out some articles later then. I had varied advice from docs and midwives, from "running?! What?!" To "if that's what you normally do, carry on" a bit like the different reactions you might get from people generally about running when not pregnant. I suggest reading up and doing what feels right for you. Err on the side of caution and carry on to a certain extent as long as you feel able.

Yes there was a running in preg article in runnersworld about 2 years ago. I was lucky to run in all my pregnancies but many of my friends don't/didn't. You just have to listen to your body and be sensible. I found that I got thirsty a lot more when preg so would carry a bottle which I normally don't do and same with my mobile phone

Congratulations to all the new Bumps!! Excellent!

I am still in survival mode most days especially in the evening when A decides to be soooooooooo much more fussy than normal. But at least she is sleeping at night when she finally gives into sleep from crying or just being awake.

She's gained 2 pounds in 6 weeks. :-) But I think she's been a bit constipated lately as when she is feeding she starts straining as if trying to move things along. This then starts a period of crying as the straining comes in waves. But I am just going day by day now with her.
