Ow, ow, ow. I think baby O has tongue tie. Ok so perhaps that's not meant to be the first thing that jumps to mind, but his sister did. He has had a small amount of the latching problem she did - much less because I know how to breast feed. He has the same retracted chin. I've been hearing the "clicking" when he feeds. And as of yesterday, my nipples are cracked & sore ESP on the left.

MOMD thinks I just want my baby to have an operation and is generally taking the piss then causing me of being grumpy.

I will speak to the community midwives tomorrow, but I don't expect they will know how to diagnose post tongue tie.

Urgh. Good luck Insomniac. Do you have a baby cafe or drop in centre with a lactation consultant? Not that they are always very on the ball. I sympathise with the knackered nipples :(

I'd hoped Maeve wouldn't have TT but of course with it being hereditary it had to be a possibility. Problem is here that once we got it snipped the latch still hasn't improved and I've got a very very windy baby Who is feeding all the time (with nipple shields) because she can't feed very efficiently.

Ooh, yes, sore nipples. I'm applying lansinoh so much I reckon she's probably getting a significant number of calories from it! I *think* latch is ok as once she's latched on it isn't painful beyond the initial 20s let down bit, I'm just a sensitive flower. Maybe TMI but before she was born I couldn't tolerate the jet of the shower on them cos they were all tender! In other news, I seem to have managed to look after her for nearly a whole week without any major disasters and we now have a name: Sophie Arwen.

Beautiful name. I wanted Arwen as Maeve's middle name but had to settle for a family name.

Im feeling in control :-) Ollie has regained is birthweight by D5! The midwife was happy w my latch - although Im not convinced, it's sore throughout and the nipple is lipstick shaped by the end of a feed. But the best thing the midwife did was give me confidence that he only needs to feed for 20 mins, the rest of his crying is because he likes being cuddled, so I've managed to get quite a lot done with him sleeping in the sling, and most importantly I just gave him to MOMD and had a full 3 hrs continuous sleep.

Nice name mrs V. Must be a relief to have it sorted. I've been pleased that people have been very accepting of our name - he has my surname as a first name and MOMD's surname - which means he actually has a different surname from his sister.

Insomniac get some help with feeding! Lipstick shaped and sore throughout are not signs of a good latch! Sounds like you have plenty of milk though as Ollie is putting on weight. And I hate to say this but the time a feed take has no correlation with how much milk baby takes in, so saying that a 20 min feed is 'right' is useless, so babies feed fast, some slow, what is important is milk transfer. When you have a good milk supply baby tends to get a lot fast without doing too much work or having a successful latch. Hopefully you can get some help so that the position of your nipple in baby's mouth is better. Did the MW check for tongue tie?

Great news that he's back to birth weight. But I agree with Tomsmum - lipstick shaped nipples are not right. I had 10 MWs tell me that lipstick shaped nipples were fine and there was no problem with my latch and I knew they were bloody wrong. If you don't think something is right just make sure you follow your instinct.

Hi all, on Tuesday night (2nd September at 23.31 hrs) our lovely little girl Lieke entered this world and she's just perfect. heart She weighs 3086 grams and measures 51cms.

The delivery was just a bit of a nightmare, not something to ever be repeated by anyone else and eventually we were rushed to the operating theatres for an emergency cesarean. But Lieke is worth it, a very happy, content little baby that loves cuddles. We are utterly in love with her and completely smitten. Very excited to start our new life as a family together. :)
