Morning all,

I've ruptured the scapholunate ligament in my wrist and have finally got a date (20/03) for the surgery to reconstruct it. However I'm also preparing for the London Marathon.

Has anyone any experience of this surgery and the kind of recovery period / impact on training? Looking into it, I'll still be in a cast for the marathon.

The other date I was given was 24th April and I thought the marathon would be impact enough without nil by mouth for surgery the next day...

Details from the Dr's / booking team were scarce, and I'm still following up with them, but want to see if there are any runners with experience.

Thanks for any info.

No idea.
However, broken wrist did not stop my wife running. So, I would _assume_ similar process could be adopted. After the cast came off we braced it with a splint and then later used Rock Tape to reduce any stress or range of movement.
You are not actively using the wrist when running, so as long as you are protecting it from any movement at that location I would guess you could proceed with care :-)

Drs can be reticent.
I find the "I am going to be doing X.... , what precautions should I take?" will elicit a better response. They are cautious by circumstance*, and will always advise cautiously as such unless you push.

*Bloody blame culture from us, overwork for them etc...

Thanks for this, I was of a similar opinion re: protecting it, but I did the worst thing you can do with a medical issue -> searched on Google. 10 minutes of gory pictures / stories on blogs about it has somewhat shifted my position...

Good advice on how to approach the Docs... If the reply in a strong negative to an expression of intent, you can take it that it really is a bad idea vs the default cautious position to a 'should I' question.

Fingers crossed it is all straight forward and you get up and running again soon after :-)
Good luck with the marathon.

Just in case someone finds this post and is looking for definitive answers...

I finally managed to speak to the consultant who was unequivocally negative about training after the op. He said 2-3 weeks off training and all but banned me from running the marathon whilst I had the cast on (6 weeks). His concern was that ligament replacements are very fragile in the earlier stages and constant jolting may affect this.

Luckily for me, I could only see the consultant after I would have had the op, so the date had already been deferred. I now need to slot it in after the marathon.

Got something to say?
