I love PGW - started reading his books early high school, just the ones on the shelf at home, but after A'levels I took a short course and used to nip out every lunchtime to buy a new one - quick reads. There's some repetition: I have a feeling that if he thought of a good line or situation he'd put it in a notebook somewhere and occasionally forget to mark it as used! Definitely one of the joys of existence.

Godammit just finished ragtime which is advertised as being published 1975 to discover in fact it's 1974. Curses. Enjoyed it though

Forfeit arrived today courtesy of BaronessBL, so much speedier than my library ;-)

I also got Flashman in the same delivery which has a scarily un-PC cover :-o I probably won't be reading this one on the tube!

recently finished 2 of my Year Books in short succession:

1970: Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye" - short, inconsequential "story", but beautifully, *beautifully* written - very evocative of time and place and very real characters - 4 Stars.

1994: Michael Marshall Smith's "Only Forward" for which I had high hopes, but was somewhat disappointing - with a frustrating structure that (eventually) revealed an extremely bizarre/unengaging premise - inventive and intermittently entertaining though - 3.5 Stars.

I read "Beloved" first - it's in my all-time top 10.
"Song Of Solomon" will be next!

meanwhile, I have started another year book:

1984: Angela Carter's "Nights At The Circus" about a woman born (hatched from an egg?) with wings(!)

Glad it arrived safely LN

And thanks to Carp I have got another 2 of mine now - I went to the amazing second hand bookshop she recommended - although I couldn't find it initially so drove round Felixstowe for ages then ran in ten minutes before they shut much to the disapproval of the lady behind the till who was already cashing up. But when I bought two books and said I'd definitely be back another time she softened a little. So I now have Blood Sport (1967) and Enquiry (1969).

Although not in the 'years of my life' I am currently reading Dead Cert his first such novel from 1962. It's quite dated with some of the language etc but still a good yarn.
