Finished my 1993 book, Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha. What a lovely, clever, warm, nostalgic, sad book. In many ways it took me right back to my 50's childhood in Wales (even though it's set in Dublin in the 60's.) Having missed reading it when it came out first I probably would never have read it had it not been for this thread. I'm very grateful! I'm going to read my 'first' book next - 1954, Rosemary Sutcliff's Eagle of the Ninth. Son1 read it as a youngster and says he doesn't think it'll be my sort of thing. We'll see |

I've decided on Flashman for my 1969 choice, one of those books I've always meant to try. Didn't bother with the library as they've been so slow with Forfeit, got it 2nd hand from Amazon instead

Ooh LazyDaisy, love both those books, I regularly run round the walls of Calleva, the Roman town mentioned at the beginning of Eagle of the Ninth!

I know I enjoyed Eagle of the Ninth, but that's all I can remember about it. I'm struggling with my 2014 book After Me Comes The Flood. It's sort of gothic and currently not making a lot of sense. doesn't help that I'm only managing 5 minutes reading before I fall asleep, so the story doesn't get a chance to flow |

I enjoyed the Rosemary Sutcliffe books when I was young - also Henry Treece and Cynthia Harnett - anything history related.

1954 is LOTR of course and for my 101 Years til Birth list (1864-1964 inclusive), I have Kingsley Amis' "Lucky Jim" lined up |

Lucky Jim was quite good I seem to remember My 1976 finally arrived. I'm enjoying EB White, I was chatting to a chap at pottery this afternoon who said he read them when they first came out. I might blog about it actually, there are lots of quotes I want to share! |
