Hi. I need to have a fasting blood test on Monday morning. My instructions are 'no undue exertion' in the 24 hours before. Does that mean I shouldn't run on Sunday morning? They are looking at inflammatory markers as well as the usual stuff.

Basically does a run count as undue exertion?

Don't know I'm afraid but would guess they would say no to running.

If the run is hard enough to produce an appreciable training effect, it will increase inflammatory markers, and this increase is likely to be detectable for 24 hours. Maybe after a run that is easy relative to what you are accustomed to, the increase will be very small, but there seems little point in taking the risk of upsetting the test for the sake of a run with minimal training effect.

Thanks, Canute. That makes sense. Will just have to go later on Monday instead.

The no alcohol for 48 hrs before will put a dampener on my weekend though ;-)

Jeebus, I would ask for a 3nd opinion on the no alcohol rule. I'm sure Geneva will have something to say about that

If its 24 hours then get up an hour earlier on Sunday for your run? Or is that cheating the system?

Canute is right, strenuous has a significant impact on inflammation markers, even 24 hours after. Probably good advice to leave it till Monday.

Got something to say?
