I can't advise as we only have a fabric crate in the car which I doubt would last long with a GSD! But I think it's a good idea to crate from the off, hope you find something suitable.

A friend lent us her crate which her puppy never used. Charlie has never used it either (apart from for a few seconds to retrieve the treats!) and I didn't persevere. But it looks the business!

Rosehip's link is excellent. Think we got ours online - but if we'd had space (and money) I think bigger would have been better. However if you are getting a playpen as well you might not need a v. big crate.

Thinking ahead a grown up, responsible GSD is pretty good with the run of the house - as you know. And they DO like to know where you are! Jess will check we are upstairs and then go back down again for instance. We would never limit her to the kitchen or even the ground floor these days. I think Floss is the same.

GSD puppies are so funny in that they look nothing like the grown up dogs.

D2's baby puppy just looks like a furry glove puppet at the moment (in the nicest, cutest possible way!)

I agree, they do change alot. It's difficult to guess what breed he is from the photo. Very cute though!

I'm persevering with socialising Charlie. He is still too excited around other dogs so I took him along to a dog meet yesterday. He had a total blast - spent the entire time tail wagging, charging after all the big dogs - comical to watch with his little legs, he'd no chance of keeping up! I'm not sure how this will help to calm him down but he enjoyed it.

She was definitely worth the wait, Sharks

The plan is I'm just going to use the crate for sleeping and if I have to go out or maybe the occasional "time out"!

The playpen will be for in the kitchen when I'm cooking and in the garden if I need him to stay nearby and chill..... I'm also going to get one for the car that I can take into family houses when he and I visit so that we are not an imposition and he can have somewhere familiar and safe to rest.

Of course we all know that its quite hard to make our dogs read and stick to "the plan"

Alice that is brilliant - you 'really' don't need to worry about Charlie and other dogs. He sounds a very happy, well adjusted character.

Your plans are sooooo good D2.

PS I have just found this pic of Jess BEFORE she came to us.... Burt I don't know which one is her as you can't see the horns on her head.

Our dog crates are very similar to the wire (in his room at home) and soft (in the car) crates on the Croft page - in fact I think that's where we got the wire crate. Sometimes Jet is clipped to the car boot floor in his harness, occasionally he sits in his harness clipped into the seat belt. It's all quite flexible.

Aww puppies are so sweet, aren't they?

Flossie likes to know where we are here at home, but settles back downstairs once she's checked our whereabouts. She's settling better at Sidmouth too - to begin with she wouldn't let us out of her sight but now she does the checking then returns to her bed in the kitchen. And regarding the sofas - this weekend she did get on the sofa when OH was in the room and I wasn't. I heard a very firm NO from him, she got off and now seems resigned to the fact that she is not allowed on them, by either of us.
