I doubt very much indeed that Meg's problem was due to you, Jangles. If professional help and your best efforts couldn't change her it's most unlikely that you will have 'made' her aggressive beyond help.

Yesterday's incident might make Hector more hesitant about approaching people he doesn't know, but that might not be a bad thing. I shouldn't have thought that it would make a normally happy Labrador snappy though.

I expect LD is right, Jangles. She's the Lab expert. :-)

Nasty experience for all concerned (including the horrible - but obviously frightened - woman) but I wouldn't expect any lasting ill effects.

If it was me I would redouble my 'polite greeting' efforts. We're still working on all sorts of things with Jess, so no let up for us.

You sound to have a typical Lab, sad to hear about Meg but glad you're happy with Hector.

D2 - a ten year old (ish) tried to stand on Jess' tail when she was about six months old. She wasn't doing ANYTHING. We were just letting them walk past.

I was pretty cross.

Jangles. I'm so sorry to hear about your incident. I hope Meg isn't injured and that she doesn't lose her natural enthusiasm.

D2 - I need to hear about that.

Jangles I would seriously consider reporting the lady to the RSPCA/Police although. It sounds like you did all the right things (tried to grab his collar, called him) He's a 6 month old Lab puppy for goodness sake, not that her behaviour would have been acceptable whatever breed it was but as the owner of a StaffyX I know that my dog when running towards someone is *always* about to attack them, in fact probably intending to kill them, their child or their dog (possibly all three) - and yes it is hard teaching a dog that basically love people not to approach them or to jump up.

I am sure if Hector had muddied her coat with his paws you'd have been apologetic, helped her if she had been frightened etc so her behaviour was completely inexcusable. It clearly wasn't nice for Hector but hopefully won't have done him any long term harm and if he is wary about approaching strangers for a bit that might be a good thing.

Working on the recall is very hard - I sometimes have more success with the Stop command when Wanda is running off but at other times I could stand and try every command I know and she will ignore me. Like LD I also have to run in the opposite direction sometimes too to get Wanda to come back - she enjoys parkrun with me so if I shout Lets Run and run away she (mostly) comes charging back.

Easier to say than do but if you can put it behind you and accept it's the woman who was at fault not you - and depending on where you live maybe report to the police (I would do but I live in rural Suffolk where the police are used to dealing with reports of dogs-related incidents I appreciate in the middle of a big city they might be considerably less interested - but the advantage of going to the police is in this area they would release that to the local newspaper and someone kicking a cute Andrex puppy would be considered the villan - not the Andrex puppy owner!) That may not be what you want though.....

The woman in question appeared to believe I was the one breaking the law and said so in between calling us irresponsible morons..

Anyway, I hope to put the incident behind me and carry on enjoying Hector's fun and enthusiasm and will work on calming him when we see people (as I was doing before anyway) although, in future I may be carrying slightly more tempting treats in case of emergency.

I had an incident myself this morning where apparantly I was the one to blame and my dog was out of control. I've just written it all here but I'm going to blog it instead - please take a look if you get a chance... comments welcome
