Hi RS, our dog minder had her own engraved dog tags with her number on. She just gave us one to put on C permanently so that if he was lost there were 2 ways of contacting someone. I thought that was quite nice (and then you don't have to worry about it being temporary).

I'd like to do that for my customers at Christmas Miss Chappo, presuming I've got regulars by then.

It's the initial walks - I need something that clips a tag on quickly. Maybe I'll have to just go with the 4cm carabiners.

I'm sure you will have regulars, RS. Dog minding/walking seems to be a growth industry!

RS I bought a really tiny (might even be for cats) thing (don't know what its called) that you unscrew and it contains a piece of paper for the owner's address/phone number (we use it for holidays so if Wanda ran off she could be returned to where she is staying). It's about the size of my fingernail.

Catching up - shocked (but not really surprised) at the fat Labs encounters. As to men with small dogs, they are definitely worse than 'hard' men with staffies/rotties etc.

Don't get me started but there is a man round here who badmouths Wanda all the time as aggressive because he met her once with his (small and out of control) dog off the lead and Wanda was also off the lead and went she ran over to greet the dog we received a mouthful of abuse for allowing our 'aggressive dog to attack his' - the fact that she didn't even get within five feet of the dog because we called her and (for once!) she came straight back seems to have passed him by. I have to say on that occasion I did tell him that his shouting was frightening our dog and probably his too and that I thought his language was completely unacceptable as the dogs hadn't even got within sniffing distance of each other. I think he now hates me as much as he hates Wanda ;-)

I do blackheart blackheart blackheart you and Wanda, Baroness.

That was completely unacceptable and unprovoked from the stupid bloke. of course you are right the shouting would make the situation far, far worse - either frightening - or in a dog like Jess' case - over exciting the dogs. I often feel a bit silly talking calmly to Jess when she's 'bad', but learned fairly early on that shouting only exacerbates the situation and ramps her up further.

Poor much-maligned Wanda. (((W)))

Baroness I've seen the little cylinders and may get some as they potentially can attach better than a tag on a temporary basis. It's the little attachments I'm having trouble finding. I can't be fiddling and breaking my nails trying to put a ring on an off when collecting for walkies.

Re shouting. We don't shout at Jet - he is actually quite sensitive, as many Cockers are.

On Tuesday Jet climbed up my leg to tell me he'd had enough of my daughter's dog (which had jumped on him several times).

Later that night at dog training one of the trainers shouted very loudly at a Setter that had gone walkabout-exploring during a 'close walk' exercise. Jet's tail went down, he kept following me on the exercise, but as soon as we stopped he climbed up my leg. Then when we did the 'stay and walk away' exercise he stayed for a few seconds then got up and walked back to me. I used my sign language to put him back - three times!

This trainer, who likes us all to speak loudly (I don't, I prefer quiet, calm commands) looked puzzled until I explained that Jet was stressed from being attacked during the afternoon and probably wanted to feel protected by me - I didn't add that the sign language was my way of reversing the 'shouting' - no idea if it's a good idea or not, but Jet responds well to it.

Anyway the effects of trauma didn't last long, and Mr returned from an extra long walk yesterday marvelling at how responsive Jet had been, and both seemed to have had a really good time..
