Under the dangerous dogs act, dogs have to be under control, or more specifically the offence is being 'dangerously out of control'. Local bylaws require dogs on lead etc.

Ah - that explains it. So I was half right with my original thought about dogs being ON lead on many highways. Local by laws say so!

Incidentally I now use a very short lead for Jess. She walks close by me and doesn't pull, although she's not under 'heel' instructions most of the time. it's HER walk after all so I let her stop and sniff unless I'm in a tearing hurry to get somewhere.

She DOES pull when the beach is in sight/smell!

I feel the very short lead is fine as she's off lead for so much of her walks. She runs ahead and looks back if I'm not following quickly enough, she lingers behind and explores ... but is very good on recall. Most of the time you don't need to bother, she'll just come racing up when she's ready - or worried!

I'm always amazed by owners who say they're frightened to let their GSD off lead because he'she might 'run off' Unless you've got bitch in heat/uncastrated male situation (ANY breeed!) GSDs just won't run off! Why would they? They are Shepherds FFS, and real 'velcro' dogs.

Hello everyone, I've been reading but not enough time to post. But we are now on holidays so free time awaits!

Holly has now finished her first season and I've noticed her behaviour has turned a corner. She's (mostly) a joy to be around rather than the complete pain she was on the early days, although she still has her mad moments. She's just coming up to 11 months so puppy owners, there is light at the end of the tunnel! I hate to admit it, but there were many times when I'd questioned if we had done the right thing getting her.

We too are not supposed to wear harness for class (although I think one or two do) but that may change as you are now allowed to wear a harness for the KCGC tests which you weren't before.

And a short lead also although we can use a 'long line' in class for training things like recall etc.. especially if you have a dog that might go and investigate another dog! I use an old horse lunge line....

I much prefer the short lead too although I do use the extendable in the countryside so that Wanda can have a bit of freedom. I don't let her off the lead in unfamiliar places or anywhere where I could see a road, even if it's a field away as birds still tend to fly towards them. Having said that, Wanda is better about birds now... she has worked out that when they fly they tend to disappear and if they are sitting on telegraph wires it is pointless trying to jump up in the air as she won't be able to jump high enough. She's still working out though that although a squirrel can run straight up the trunk of a tree, try as she might Wanda can't. :-)

Good news about happy dogs.

We went for a short walk on the lead down my farm track this evening .... on the outside of the gate! He came back very fast; bless.

Today has been a bit better but that could be because he was feeling slightly under the weather after his jab. Tomorrow's bride and groom came for a last run through this afternoon, he meet them about three weeks ago and welcomed them today like long lost best friends - tart :)
