We had like 2 showers for 15 girls. We didn't usually bother, it would have taken a whole lesson just to shower.

JK *chameleon*
My cheapo gym (which I really ought to either cancel or visit once in a while) has only shower cubicles. No open ones.

I'm a shy sort really, and I'm not sure I'd be comfortable showering for all and sundry to look at (yes, I know, nobody's looking. Tell that to my paranoia) I'm not a huge fan of the communal changing either, but I can tolerate that.

We were forced to shower - you needed a note claiming a) verucca or b) period to get out of it. Good for hygeine, good for bullying, horrible for self-conscious/lacking confidence types. Mental cruelty, really. I hear it's changed now.

Son of a Pronator Man
at school in the 1970's, there was no way we would have been allowed to end a PE class without a shower, the teachers would simply not have allowed it. So i got used to being naked around other guys ( in a changing room situation) and it doesn't bother me. I'm happy to shower in the open part of the showers. It's funny seeing younger guys at the gym undress under a towel and then scurry into the cubicle to shower .

Not in the gym, but in open showers (female only) when camping, I have seen teenage girls go into the showers with swimsuits and cagoules on...

I went to an all boys school. Showers were compulsory and cold. The changing room was separated from the corridor by no more than iron railings. It came as rather a surprise one week to discover that we were merrily getting changed in full view of a few sixth form girls whose Economics A-level class was a joint effort with the neighbouring girls school.

I suspect these days such arrangements would not be allowed to continue.

Years of all boys schools and then rugby clubs mean that I don't even think twice about communal showering. Men's bodies and bits mostly look bloody silly , so what is there to worry about? Makes me laugh watching the contortions that go on. Did realise that I was probably showing more than I should to the outside world when changing after HDS, but was so cold I really didn't care. :-)

I suspect - and I realise that this is another huge and unproven generalisation - but teenage girls are a lot better at psychological warfare than boys of that age, who lean more towards physical bullying. Am I wrong?

After HDS I was so cold I didn't care that the women's changing tent was full and rather than wait, most of us just changed outside, in full view of the entire finish area and bag drop.
