our changing rooms at work are an open changing room with individual shower cubicles (so pretty standard). there are quite a few people who take their stuff into the wet shower cubicle to get changed rather than changing in public. seems a shame.

I think I would feel weird showering in public, but I don't think twice about drying off and changing in the open area of the changing rooms.
Which makes no sense at all.

(On a slightly related topic, the rudest behaviour I've ever seen in a sporting environment was in the changing rooms at Bikram yoga, where all the showers were in use, and some girl said to a total stranger 'I've got somewhere really important to be, so do you think you could, like, get out so I can have your shower?'*)

*showering girl had been in there about 3 minutes, and was mid-hair wash. Not having a half hour relaxing spa-like experience

I was at the swimming pool yesterday. The men's shower room has two private cubicles at either end and three open showers. I just went in the open bit, but the one other person who came in went into a cubicle but left the door open. Maybe it was the way I was staring at him and grunting?

I don't think wanting a bit of privacy in the shower necessarily means you don't like your body or are ashamed of it. Maybe some of us just like to keep some of the mystery about us 😉

I think it's age-related as well. The girls getting changed under huge towels and using all sorts of contortionism to avoid flashing any bits are nearly all younger. I think as we get older we get more of an "oh, nobody cares, just get on with it" attitude. I really hate my body but still change in the main changing room, I just do it fast and consider that nobody's looking anyway.

I always adopt the Ron Burgundy method....

"Hey everybody, come see how good I look!"

I am though, sadly deluded

The local school sends teens to the gym on Monday and they get around the issue of shower-shyness by not bothering to shower.

gents changing rooms don't tend to give you the option to shower separately....ay my work there are 6 open showers and an open changing area but one shower in a cubicle/with own changing area behind a door. Its rare to see anyone use the cubicle and is often when all other showers full and the door usually left open anyway

I think Carp's right, the older the women in the gym changing room the more readily they'll strip off and wander round naked without giving a shit. Getting older has its compensations :)

We didn't have any showers at my school, but we all did some kind of sport most days. Lucky teachers.
