The jumping to the side is so you go straight into a sprint with out waiting for the belt to speed up. I thought it was fairly common thing to.

I've always done that when doing any intervals. I struggle more running and holding down the increase pace buttons...

Just goes to show that it's been ages since I used a dreadmill. I remember a number of years ago having to use one when it had snowed and turned to ice. I did 10K and it was really boring. I don't know how some people do marathons on them.
