Winded, if I was worried about a few hundred grammes I'd cut down on the ale. One thing I haven't noticed is any increase in rolling resistance.

I had marathon + on a hybrid commuter and hey were great. What difference you notice is probably about what you had on before.

Out on my road bike today, which has 105 groupset.

Occasionally ( ie less than 10 times in 33 miles ) I would try and change up gear, the lever would click but nothing happens, shift again, then it jumped up 2 cogs, so had to downshift.

Anyone able to advise on what's the most likely cause of this ? Would it be gear cables being stretched and needing replaced, or adjusted ?

Bike done about 900 miles since new, what's the average mileage for changing things like gear cables ?

TIA

It does sound like a cable issue but probably not cable stretch - wrong symptoms. More likely crud making the cable move "sticky."

Before anything else would check the cable guide under the bottom bracket for mud/bits of grass. A spray of oil there won't hurt. If that does not fix it then I might change the cable.

I was thinking of some stickiness in the shifter itself. Last time I had that problem a good squirt of WD40 sorted it.

Yup - sticky cables.
I'd change the cables and outers.
Lubricating the cables might help a bit, but only as a temporary measure.

As to how long they last....... as long as they last!
Left to oxidise in a garage for six months will kill them quite quickly regardless of the amount they are used overall.

Riding in wet, muddy and dusty environments also speed up the deterioration, as does ham-fisted changing (wears the inside of the outer much more quickly)
But well cared for and regularly 'firtled' cables can last ages

Careful with the WD-40 in the shifter, Glenn - it'll washout the light grease that keeps everything working and although it'll free things up initially, it will only be temporary.
