But, isn't it the changer that is different in 11 speed? Molesy was only going to change the rear mech..

""So a 6800 rear mech would work with a 10-spd cassette and my existing 105 shifters.""
NO!
NO!
I refer you to my previous answer.
6800 = 11 speed
Rear end of bike and the corresponding shifter do not allow mixing 10 and 11 speeds (but you can in theory add a device so that the wrong shifter mimics the behaviour of the correct shifter)
For the front mech generally it does not make much difference as the spacing tends to be the same - I would look up the specs i.e. How far the wire is pulled by the shifter etc but generally speaking the front mech and chai set would be OK- the rear ones are not mix &anarchy. (Officially not are the front ones and they may also not work too well if you mix 10 & 11 speed.)

The shifter pulls the wire a specific distance. In the shimano system that distance is different for 10 speed and 11 speed.

The pulled wire then makes the rear mech move across a specific amount - again the amount it moves across is different per MM of wired pulled. The gearing of the pulleys is different - the indexing will only work if the gearing of those pulleys allows overlap. You might be able to fiddle with it and get it to "work" but these beautiful machines work very well - there is no point in putting 11 speed ultegra bits on in such a way that they will work badly/not at all.

Swap between different 10 speeds shimano sets ups all you like if it is all 10 speed. Also if it is all 11 speed. Also take liberties with the front mech/ changer combo. Don't mix 10 &11 speed kit when it comes to shifter/rear mech/cassette.

No - 10 speed and below are all compatible.
11-speed has both a different cable pull length and rear rhombus ratio.

Mech hanger straight? That can cause odd shifting further up the block.

Incidentally, as well as the road 10 and 11 speed stuff not being compatible, road and mtb ten are also different, as are road and mtb eleven speed. Some road ten speed stuff you can run an MTB 9 speed rear mech, and some you can't. So running a big MTB block with a road shifter can be fun. Now if Shimano would just do a clutch mech in their cx series....

So 11-spd would require new cassette, chain, mech and shifters in one go.

Thanks all.

After a thotough inspection, I took the rear mech apart and cleaned it, seems to have fixed the issue :)
And as it's the bank holiday I sat and tinkered with my old bikes too... I've got quite a lot of play in a rear mech - it's between the hanger bolt and the mech housing - which a strip down and clean up hasn't fixed.

Given the mech is around 18 years old, this is just old age/wear and tear isn't it? There didn't seem to be anything which could affect this other than the mech body being 'snugger' on the hanger bolt. I imagine the body gradually loosens as the years pass by from the tension holding it. Can you even buy 7 speed mach's any more?
