richmac how old is the Marin and what travel does the old forks have? Newer forks you'll struggle to find anything under 100mm which could chop your bike out.

Rockshox are still doing a basic 100mm travel fork for 26ers . They ain't light or pretty but they'd fit.

Also, be ware of tapered steerers - you can run them with a 1 1/8th head tube but you'll need an adapter on the bottom race of your headset, and again it'll change the geometry of the bike. Just something to watch if you re thinking 2nd hand.

SW tapered forks are 1.5" at the base and 1 1/8th upper.

There are times when MrsC thoroughly regrets getting suspension forks for her favourite old bike, mostly because of the faff we had but partly because the revised geometry is a bit of a compromise. She definitely needs a new bike.

Has anyone got any tips for stopping bars slipping? The aero bars on my tri bike refuse to stay in place, and keep working completely loose after a few km of cycling.

I've tightened them to the rated torque value, slightly above that value. I've tried putting a slice of old inner tube between the clamp and bull horn bars. I've tried spraying the bar with hair spray (someone suggested this may help), but none of them have worked.

I could possibly try loctiting the bolts, but that then limits subsequent adjustment. The fundamental problem is a slightly tapered set of bull horn bars, so any road vibration works the bar slightly along until the pretension in the bolts is lost, but before I go for replacing the bar does anyone have any other ideas that may work?

Why the fuck would a manufacturer taper a bull bar when the next most obvious addition is a set of aero clip-ons?

Sorry MM, but you've already tried all my suggestions. There's no point in thread locking because, as you say, the problem is lateral movement along the bar.

Yes, Idio, I am aware of that, ta. You can run a tapered fork on a straight 1 1/8th tube with an adapter.

MM - can't think of anything you haven't tried.

It's worse than that - it's supposedly a matched set of bull bars and aero bars! The stem clamp is chosen at 31.8mm, and the brake mounting at 26mm, but they've chosen the worst possible transition between the two sizes!
