If the Ultegra double gives you the same range, then there is no problem... Allthough I doubt it...

I've got a triple, because I knew nothing about bikes when I bought it. Would prefer a double.

I find it a bit confusing comparing different sets of gears. I think this is because they are sold by how many teeth are on the cogs but what actually matters is how far the bike moves for each revolution of the pedals, sometimes this is expressed in gear inches or gear metres.

It may not be as good as trying different gearing on different hills but it is possible to compare the output you will get rather than just the size of the cogs. There are lots of online tools if you can't be bothered to make your own spreadsheet, sheldonbrown.com or bikecalc.com or Google will show you many more.

If you were told that the compact offered the same range as the triple, well that might be true or it might not depending on the size of the cogs they use. What you can do is check the truth of what you were told. Look up the bikes online and put the gears each has into (say) the sheldon brown calculator. If the range isn't the same and you were told it was then that gives you a reason to show the bike shop a print out and ask/tell them to swap the bike for you. (no cost is always the cheapest option)

I realised that, Edi. You know about bikes, unlike me.

I love having a Triple. The Granny ring gets me out of trouble when the poor old legs have had enough and I can't be arsed to get out of the saddle :-)

I have a compact and two triples. I quite like having the choice. The triple is strictly speaking my winter bike, but when I'm doing vicious gradients I sometimes take it out even in summer. Like this weekend (although my good bike needs a bit of fettling which was the "official" excuse). I also quite like using the 39 ring on more rolling stuff.

I was out on the bike tonight and when I was changing up and down the gears ar the back it felt and sounded like it was between gears and when changing the front gear down it was making a grinding/rubbing noise? Any ideas on how to fix or should I take it to a professional
