My God, it seems like peace has broken out! :-);-) AND before anyone pounces on my remark there, I WAS JOKING and being a bit light hearted! Hendo, excellent suggestion and well put. Boab, yes I think I know exactly where I went wrong with my last mara training now you have said that. I was doing too many pointless short interval sessions and no where near enough long intervals say 800 yassos for example and long marathon paced runs. The dangers of getting dragged along by club sessions I suppose... I'm definitely going to utilise this method from now on so yes, I'l be grey area training quite a lot. BUT it will be for a reason. Hopefully I have by now developed a reasonable base. Of course the training will have to included maintenance too but this is all very interesting reading. Hendo's idea of a HR thread for beginners has got me thinking that perhaps we would all benefit from another thread that talks about such issues as marathon paced training, the pros and cons etc? I think when you have done one or two marathons then you start wanting to fine tune the training. Threshold training is one area I would benefit from too. I don't do enough although I have quite a bit in my new plan... I know I certainly need to train more effectively, hence me turning to P&D. I more or less died on my arse in the last 10k at Loch Ness too Boab and it left me very frustrated! I was getting excruciating cramp too from my backside all the way down both legs to such a degree that it stopped me dead once or twice and all I could muster for teh last 4k was a slow jog. Hamstrings and quads were trashed for several days after... |

Another thread would be a good idea. I'm now wondering which way to take my training for FLM- to do as I did for NY or to include more tempo work etc? My main weakness was my legs gave out before my CV fitness did, so need to work out what to do with that! |

Girlie - the way to go for you is more of the same! That;s an endurance issue, and the way to improve that is with more time on feet - more miles, and concentrating on becoming an aerobic monster! The two types of running that will benefit you most are the Running a LOT at easy pace, and Good quality Tempo runs! Ian - I had incorporated quite a lot of marathon paced runs into my training before Berlin, and the last 10K was pretty strong. I'm sure that it was that factor that made the difference to me! I had the Base, just needed to train my body to hold a pace! A simplified version that I've heard bandied around with regard to this was Run for your Predicted Marathon TIME AND run at your PM Pace But never together! |
