I approached the episode with trepidation - I have not enjoyed so many of the more recent episodes.

I kinda enjoyed this. Bill seems like a breath of fresh air and Capaldi's Doctor was far more bearable than the grumpier version in previous episodes. Matt Lucas seems completely superfluous, though. The story was simple - captivating at times - but I found my interest wandering in a few sections and feel that the pacing could have been better.

Certainly going in the right direction though, hope this means more enjoyable episodes than ho-hum ones.

That's pretty much how I felt about it, too. Clearly it was just about re-establishing all the basics of the series (just like every other "new companion" story) and it's likely that future episodes will be more ambitious.

I'm intrigued by the teaser for the next episode at the very least.

Capaldi's depiction had a nod towards William Hartnell's often irascible Doctor [this was many moons ago] but Bill was quick with a smile and comprehending in her curiosity. Heather, her new best friend, turned out to be much more menacing than that. Matt Lucas was hopelessly sidelined as the comedy interest and the show could have run perfectly well without him. Still, the return held the attention, set the context and retained its wackiness.

***Possible Spoilers Alert***

**Look Away Now**

So will we find out who the lad in the pic is?

From the pic next to the pic of the lad, are we to assume that Bill is River's child (or, given that the good Doctor has been hanging around the university for a lengthy, her granddaughter?). (Or an incarnation of River ~ Chameleon Watch???)

And what are the promises he made?

The picture next to River? Is that the 'lad' you're talking about? Or did I miss something?
