i think i might have to watch it again, as watching any TV after a few too many sherbets is never a good idea, but i enjoyed it.

not overly christmasy, but it kept with the spirit of an Xmas edition in that it was a bit tongue in cheek and the story line involved aliens trying to take over the world.

the more i watch Capaldi the more i think he's a brilliant doctor, despite having to work with so many below average scripts in his time.

I hadn't realised it was a whole year since the last one and I was a bit confused he was mourning for..

Why New York? Appeal to the US audience?

i guess partly new york cos it's nearly always London, but no reason it couldn't be somewhere else in the uk. Though maybe because it was easier to pay tribute to / take the mickey out of existing super hero stories as most of them are set in america. The 'globe' symbol was obviously a superman reference but i'm sure there were more.

I was surprised they were allowed to show a bit of a Superman comic. Not sure how copyright works on that.

I thought it was really good fun. Was slightly confused about the 'mourning' thing as I thought, 'But he can't remember Clara.' Thanks for the link Tomsmum: I'd clearly forgotten last Christmas's special.

I've just watched yesterday's show on iPlayer and found it rather a curate's egg: good in parts. In being derivative, the writing was honestly so and the SFX a tribute to the CGI skills the comic producers never imagined.
Capaldi has warmed to the role and I to him by equal measure but his character's strength & presence leave the other cast members struggling to keep up - or perhaps that was the writer's intention.
Still, a tasty morsel.

Just watched it and enjoyed it. The clips from the new series look good. Can you remind us where did Matt Lucas' character come from?

I also couldn't work out the mourning thing.

Did enjoy it though :)

Good, fun episode !

Just one thought from me though - aren't UNIT a bit rubbish at what they do? I've seen a couple of issues with their ways of working over the last episodes where they've been involved !
