My inner cynic says the sonic screwdriver is for BBC marketing purposes. After all, you can't really sell Dr Who branded sunglasses.

I enjoyed bits of it, but other bits felt rather contrived to be "clever".

I liked it. After last week's superb episode I was expecting an "after the Lord Mayor's show comes the dustcart", most of the Doctor Who finales have been pretty silly. But that was alright and tied things up as well as any series involving time travel can.

I think the essential problem with Doctor Who finales is that they have to start with the appearance of some universe-shattering threat which makes all the series' previous threats pale into insignificance (usually the Daleks, or in this case, something called "The Hybrid" which is supposed to be really scary even though we'd never heard of it before), which is then knocked on the head within the usual 45 minutes, leaving something of an anti-climactic feeling.

I liked it - quite dark in places,

Still not conviced about the 'Me/Ashildr" character throughout this series.

Xmas special looks like a bit of a 'lark' adventure.

i think that the xmas specials tend to be quite light hearted and a bit silly on purpose. it is xmas, after all :-)

Liked the first 15 minutes, then fell off, then liked the last 10-15. So guess that comes out as a win.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but I liked it. Richmac didn't but I just did. No detailed analysis but it was enjoyable and the Christmas special looks good. Richmac suspected a spin off, but as Mini and I watched all the Sarah Jane Adventures together and I liked Torchwood until it got silly I can't complain!

finally watched the finale on iplayer last night.

Great beginning, not bad ending. Very boring talky nonsense in the middle with no sense of threat at all. Just an artificial threat with weeping angels, daleks, cybermen etc in that catacomby thing for no very good reason.

Funny how Stewie in Family Guy can use his time machine to bring Brian back to life and explain how clearly in about 5 seconds without the lip-pursing, eye-rolling, smug-puzzled-looking (Clara's one expression), shouting and angst that characterise the current Doctor series. Mind you, Seth MacFarlane isn't as far up his own backside as the Doc. Who team.
