CLIF citrus caffeinated for me.

First one not until 7 or 8 miles for me - muscles and liver should be stuffed full of glycogen if you've carb loaded the days before and had some breakfast, so no need for one at start line, imo.

Then every 30 mins or so

Oh, I also had a 500ml bottle of Lucozade sport (other pukey, sugary brands are available, but not for free, like what they are at VLM!) :-) G

SIS for me. 1 before, 2 more on route at 6/12 (Carried under sweatband) and two picked up for 18 and 23.
5 in total, anymore than that i would boff.

I use Gu gels, between 0 and 2 depending on how I feel. I took 2 on Sunday because I felt tired from the start.

Gus - I think that was a learn for me from Sunday. I had a plan to have one at 5,10,15,20,25. I had Porridge and also some Pasta before the start. I then took a gel at 5 and really didn't want to take one at 10 but forced myself! Same again at 15.

High5 here; same as WW, they're just dead easy to take - pretty liquid compared to thick gloop. So no need for thinking about having to take them near a water station, they can be taken independent from drinking (whereas I would really want some water with/after the thicker types).

I've got in to the habit of one pre-start too, then 4 or 5 spread out every few miles en route.
I don't think there's anything to worry about with the pre-start one. Sugar spike? I've never felt a sugar spike in my life from any food at any time, so I don't know why 90 calories of gel should suddenly knock my metabolism sideways.

Lots of info here and I'll probably try some other brands. I'm also now judging it's not necessarily the brand but caffeinated versions that are leaving me feeling ill.

Hi Cameron - my fueling for the day was a 600ml bottle mix of Tailwind Raspberry caffeinated dunk between 8:45 and 9:45 so as to go off fueled and hydrated, then a GU Salted Watermelon gel every 45 minutes, 3 gels taken on the day. These are the only gels I have found I can stomach, they are caffeinated though, taste really good.

2:44 - fantastic time Phill, well done. A pal of mine commented on a blog in here about Tailwind. Very popular with the ultra community. :-) G

Thanks HappyG(rrr) - Yep, Tailwind great for ultras, used it for Lakeland 50 last year. I would use for marathons but don't want to carry water bottles around the course. :)
