Haha Paul - yes I should have taken it easier that day, although the wind late on round mile 18 was really sapping. First 5 miles were done at just over 7 minute pace (there was a few sub 7s!) which was bonkers, the whole first 6 months of 2012 was a purple patch that I've never touched again.

Duchy 5- miles (3.19):

7:00.1 / 6:56.4 / 6:54.3 / 7:12.3 / 6:59.0 : 35.06

Then compare to the first 5 miles of Taunton done (3.29)

7:15.9 / 7:20.0 / 7:09.0 /7:06.2 /7:11.4 :36:02

Opening 5 miles of Duchy did far less damage to me. You say obviously fitter before Duchy, I'd point out I set my half mara pb 6 weeks before Taunton at 1.29.00... Admittedly I didn't do a half in the build up to Duchy otherwise that might have been faster than 1.29.

But conclusion - first 5 miles too fast in both races, but both sets were done on flat in knowledge of hills to come.

I think taking a gel before the start can be the wrong thing to do, if you google it you can find some things around a sugar spike on the line being the wrong thing to set you up for the race. My question would be for the marathon of all distances why do you need a glucose hit / sugar rush on the line?

I take one before start WW. My logic was begin the ingestion before the depletion. A sugar spike can be felt, but your brain, early in the race, can overcome the effect. Whereas later in the race, lack of sugar, now amount of steely determination and mind over matter, can correct. :-) G

4 SiS gels for me in a marathon, at 8, 12, 16 and 20 miles. The last 2 will probably be of a caffeine variety. I also take my time in consuming them, it passes 0.25 of a mile if nothing else.

I'd taken sis gels on Sunday - 1 before the start then with a plan for 5.5, 11,16.5 and 22m but after dropping one around 16 i swapped for a drink of lucozade at mile 23. Managed to squirt it in my eye in the process ;-)

I normally can't eat for a couple of hours after a hard race and don't always use gels so don't think they are an issue. More likely to be my body is buggered ;-)

And I have 8 (yip, 8!) all caffeinated, SIS Go blackcurrant. I got used to them and I'll take any help I can get. I don't take any gels in training runs (once I'd got used to them for the marathon race day). My logic was a long, slow run is mostly fat burning / aerobic. Tempo or MP are sugar burning, but short enough to run on stored glycogen. I may have taken one gel in my longest MP (12 or 14 miles within a 20 miler)? I take 1 or most 2 in a half marathon. :-) G

Body is b*ggered is true as Stoosh says, and isn't there something about blood having been redirected to leg muscles, so things like digestion (and arguably brain) are sacrificed to support the straining muscles? I think a couple of hours of dodgy tummy after a marathon would be normal (and acceptable trade for a PB, for me anyway!) :-) G

Wow, so many variations.

Sunday was my 2nd time of a startline gel on the basis of what harm can it do. I also started that after VLM last year where I didn't take enough gels and 'bonked' in the last 2 miles.

I use SiS gels, anything but orange flavour is fine but I no longer use caffeine gels as they seemed to make me feel sick. Sunday was the fist time this happened with normal gels.

I may need to go back to my 5/10/15/20 strategy

On the subject of gels. I am also an Orange SiS man! I never drink Coffee so caffeine is not familiar for me. Once took a Caffeine gel and felt all over the place, thought I was ill!!!
