Just texted big KJTindall to say I prob won't be actually Fenners. Are you racing this year? Too busy - missus is just back from a week away doing horse things. I've got my mum to collect from airport, then stay then take her back to her house, I've got a new car to pick up and we're trying to sell the house.

But actually that's all rollocks - I had another physio sesh last night and she said one more week of no running. So I'm just grumpy that I can't run and I don't want to watch hunners of other folk having a brill time!

Have a brill time if you're doing it FR. Wonderful race. :-) G

Yep, it's my 'B' race before the 'A' race (Lakeland 100 (and five!))

I did more miles before Taunton than I did before Duchy and more 20 milers too, that goes without saying... In fact before the Duchy pb I only did 9 weeks of marathon training. I also did speed work too. I didn't do any strength work before either. The 10 mile pace run was the same for both. I could tell at Taunton on the day, I didn't feel 100% sharp. That was all.

You had a quality pacer at the Duchy though Chrisull, even if you did ignore him ;-)

What nutrition do you guys consume during a marathon? I was using Torq gels for a few marathons up to Snowdonia last year. But changed to SIS as the Torq made me feel queasy at the finish. At London though the same thing happened, if not worse, and it was a good two hours before I was comfortable with eating something. May go back to Torq as flavours are nicer.

I take SiS Orange gels.

At Southampton, I had a gel 10 minutes before the start and 4 more at 9, 13, 19 & 22 miles. I used to take the gels too quickly now I take anywhere from half a mile to a mile to consume the gel which feels a lot better. I also take them now when I feel the pace getting too much as probably using fat as a fuel. So the miles I took them on were really down to how I felt.

I did wonder reading Baz's blog that a gel at the start, and then every 30 minutes, looked a bit like a recipe for an upset stomach part way through. But then equally I'd be concerned at only taking on fuel when I felt I needed it - surely it's potentially too late then?

On the recent long runs I've done (3hr30+) I've only started taking on fuel after about an hour, and then tried small bits every 30 minutes or so. No gels though, soreen, mouthfuls of sandwiches, 1/4 of a sausage roll, that sort of thing. But then my energy depletion rate will have been significantly slower than racing marathon pace.

Thanks Huntsman. I didn't take to orange years ago so tried pineapple this time at 5, 10, 14, 18 then a caffeine cola at 22. A gel before the start and then consuming slowly sounds like good advice.

High 5s for me @ 5, 10, 15, 20, 23 although this made me remember that I squirted most of my 1st gel over my sunglasses on Sunday!

The last 2 were caffeinated; you need to try those before you use them in anger as they can drive you a bit wacko.

The High 5s are very easy to take compared to other gels I've tried although I can also tolerate those Lucozade gels that they give out on the course.
