Abingdon was my first "raced" marathon, my first sub 3:15 and my first Fetch fest. It was fab. If you're interested, I blogged in my usual verbose deluge - Oct 2009. I actually had a really tough time, but nothing to do with the course or the company. Just learning my craft. :-) G

It helped me in Boston lark :-) although I'm sure not stopping at all would have been better!

WW - Drinks stations are provided every 3 miles with Lucozade at miles 14 and 23 and sponges are available at the water stations at miles 7 and 16.
Great race IMO, flat, well organised and a real runners race.

WW in response, to your question on being 1 min slower in the first half on Sunday, I'd say yes, if you had gone through HM in 1.29.45 then you would probably have been able to maintain the pace until the end. Your HR would probably have been a couple of bpm lower by halfway and I think that would probably made the difference. But you were so close that a fast finish in the last 400 would probably have seen you get 2.59.xx

I think a 2.59.99 sounds cooler anyway :-)

If you want a big city feel but with one starting place, not too crowded and a good route I;d recommend Rotterdam. I have done it the last two years. Crowd support is excellent, the Expo & start are easy to get to as all in the centre and next to hotels so no stressing race day. It attracts a lot of fast runners so there will be people to race in your category and its not crowded (other than for maybe the first 200-400m). I think it's much better as a PB option than London personally. I've already booked hotels for next year! :)

Tizer, thanks. PMSL - that included a 'fast' finish ;-)

Peacey - good, valuable advice, thanks. And G I read your blog and it didn't put me off entirely!

Simply, I just need to train again and see where it takes me but I feel like I'm still learning in every cycle and I feel like the changes I made this time round helped me a lot. It's the 1st time since my 1st cycle that I've tried a WW-plan; I'm going to build my own one again this time over with a few more tweaks and look forward to the industrial estate / underpass etc!

Just need to avoid getting old. That'd help....

I'm going the other way Tizer.

I think WW needs to be as comfortable as you can be during a marathon going through halfway in 87:44 and allowing a drift. I don't think that's banking time but allowing for a painful last 5/10k with a natural slowing down.

The 4 local sub 2:30 marathon runners at VLM, I do mean all, ran a positive split. They run more miles and are more talented, controversial :-)

Sounds like they are not fulfilling their true potential. Imagine what they could do if they paced the first half properly ;-)

I think running a positive split and planning for a positive split are different things.

Controversial point, planning to slow down is already letting a slight crack appear in the mental preparation.
