I'm really probably talking about myself, I guess when talking about pacing strategy. As I get more miles in my legs my conversion from Half to marathon should improve but at the moment I'm a poor converter. So I really don't believe I can run a 7:20-7:25m/m in the first few miles and also the same pace for the last three, I'm too tired.

paul a with thousands of miles in his legs probably can. Anyway, more miles before my next effort will make the difference. Getting to the impressive mileage Baz did in the build up would make a huge difference.

I think for the large majority of well trained runners allowing for a 1-3 minute fade for the second half is the optimum strategy.

Duncan, most of the "extra" distance, isn't. It's just Garmin inaccuracy. Even running away from the racing line doesn't add much distance. The effects of barging, dodging, water bottles on the ground, enforced speed and slow down because you're in a bunch, tripping, losing focus or concentration due to crowds and noise etc. are prob all bigger factors, imho!

luna, I've just entered Chester. I should have waited a day and waited for recommendations of Brussels or Valencia. Oh well, committed now! :-) G

Chester and Abingdon are popular for Autumn marathons on here and the sub 3 forum on Facebook. I'm going to attack my half time this October. Base building from here until 12 weeks before the race.

Good luck this Autumn HappyG, are you injury free now?

Wise words back there LouLou. Underlying issue for me was a piriformis issue I've had since Snowdonia last year. Despite a decent HM and 5K time this year I think given the marathon distance the piriformis issue literally bit me in the arse! If I'm lucky to get a London place again amongst the masses I'll be adding 15 minutes and chilling out like I did two years ago. Wow, that was a LSD run in more ways than one.

Oooooh.

I applied for a gfa place for edin half last night and I have just had an email confirming my place. From Freya Ross no less who seems to have a job with gsi events.

I had thought I saW her running on the canal path two weeks ago.

Not really pain in the leg (bit of discomfort in ankle) but physio is concerned about causing further nerve damage. I'm going to cause some physio damage if she doesn't give me a decent prognosis and let me get back running! ;-)

Just hoping to get back to steady running, build up the miles and look forward to having an autumn target. Boston Qualifying time for 45-49 is 3:25, so I'm targeting 3:14 to make it safe. I'm hoping that should be doable. Will be nice to have a marathon goal again. Will be interesting to see where my half, 10K and 5K times get to during a reasonable campaign too. :-) G

I think this calc is right, but I'm sure better mathematicians than me would correct it.

If a marathon of 42195m needs to accumulate an error of 0.2miles per 26.2miles, if we break down the whole marathon into 1000 triangles of running away from the line and back to the line, a runner running from dead on the line to 2.61m away from the line and back again across every 42.195m triangle would accumulate an error of 0.2 miles over the full distance.

That'd approximate to running from lane 1 to lane 3 (and a bit) on an athletics track twice every straight. I think Happy's assessment that the error is smaller than most people imagine is probably accurate as most runners, even if they aren't on the blue line, tend to run in mostly straight lines most of the time.

I woke up this morning and decided I wanted to run Edi marathon. I drafted my email to them asking for a GFA place then realised I am on holiday in Spain :-0

I feel amazing today though. It might be a difficult day not to enter lots of races.

I did Valencia in 2015. It's freakin awesome. The course is so flat that it makes London look like Snowdonia. The only problem is.....it was 23C at the finish line when I got there. I was told this was unusual and I felt like I actually coped with it pretty well. Totally recommend. It's cheap too as you can get good low cost airline flights without issue as it's not on the tourist radar quite like Barca or Madrid (yet). Do it boys.

I'm also enjoying the pacing debate which becomes more pointed when you've just had your own experience. I went through HM in 88:44 on Sunday. If I'd have given myself another minute would I have saved myself 2 mins on the back half? We often talk about losing double but I don't know if that's really true.

I have an Abo place, probably will use that as I do want to try something that I can just get up and drive to in the morning. I checked the previous results and there are just enough around our standards I hope. Also, there have been so many great results on this thread there over the years. Lou and Peacey obviously but I remember OllyW doing it the same year as Lou and MrD running 2:59:59 there one year!

One question on Abo though - are there enough drinks stations etc for a thirsty one like me?

Just a peculiar thought - if someone were to find themselves having gone through half a minute too fast, would stopping and taking a breather for a minute make any meaningful (useful) difference?
