Waits for Paul A to say slow miles makes a slow runner.

I'm with KinkyS. Different stokes for different folks.

But something I have learnt to my cost DONT mix and match. Chose a philosophy and stick with it.

I probably do my long runs faster than would ordinarily be prescribed. I also try to do a few sessions of essentially long runs at MP ie up to 16/18m at MP for a session. I really struggle to run at the pace that is suggested in some plans for long runs (unless I am running an off road or particularly hilly route). I find my legs just ache really badly if I run too slow. If I do want a slower pace I tend to go for an off road long run rather than churn out a slow road long run or do an LDWA type event.

Agree Jovi. I'm sure my Ldwa Winter Tanners 20 and Punchbowl marathon(30 miler) two years ago conditioned went some way towards my VLM effort.

Well I am a slow runner - struggle to break 20 mins on the local parkrun (ok not the fastest course) and finished well down the order in a local 6km fell race yesterday. But I can keep a similar pace up for a marathon :-)

Definitely there's a place for some faster miles in marathon training but I'm not one to go out and batter myself on a training run without some very specific goals. 20k at MP tomorrow will be one of those occasions (postponed from weekend due to the race). Even so, I'll only be doing MPish.

I dont think anyone suggests that you should only run slow miles. However, for any runner they have their place, but alongside appropriate other miles.

That said, lots of slow miles in my experience set you up for being able to run faster stuff and doing lots of slow miles can lead to some surprises when you do try and run fast.

Anyone who neglects long slow miles is likely to have some regrests if they try to race a longer distance though ;-)

Spot on Baz. My view is that time of feet is like the foundations when building a house. If you have solid foundations you can then add all the ornate fittings.

I suppose in the world of RW selling 18-week marathon plans people are suckered in.

And as this is about 'marathons' and not knocking out a quick half marathon building the foundations is mandatory.
