I'm thinking of going back to having frequent sports massage - mind you HappyG would freak out if he knew how much money I'm spending on my personal trainer per week :) let's just say it's an investment when I consider how much confidence I've gained and how much improvement in my body there has been thus far.

May give up my gym membership and take out a cheaper one if I need one.

Wrt to your PT Lou, you never answered my question about weights about 10 pages back...!? ;-)

How hard to you do your legs weight sessions? Do you do them same day, day before or day after a hard (fast or long or hilly) run? How do you cope with hard weights = tired legs = rubbish run or hard run = tired legs = can't do weights?!

I actually did the lunges and squats in bodypump yesterday for first time in (I think) 2 years last night. I guess I just need to zip up! :-) G

Happy, this is not a critism but merely an observation ....

You said on the previous page your legs so mashed from long runs you couldn't do weights on your lunges (or was it squats). I never have that, so what I am wondering is....am I not working hard enough on my long runs at the weekend or are you perhaps working too hard???
I don't do a Monday body pump class but if I did I would do normal weights following a big weekend eg 20 + 20. I might reduce them if I had done a raced ultra. Perhaps I need to be pushing myself harder so I cant do normal weights???

Happy - apologies - don't always keep up to speed with the 3.15 thread ...

Weights - gluts work we do hip thrusts and I'm using 70kg at present (barbell + weights) they don't give you DOMS. I actually do weights on the days I do my sessions by default rather than design. We keep an eye on any niggles/ DOMS that develop to make sure it's not weights doing it. My squats aren't that heavy - think about 40kg and deadlifts around 50kg. I Do a lot of bodyweight stuff as well. I really enjoy weight training especially seeing the changes and getting leaner. Much more physique changes than running has ever brought.

My twenty miler on Sunday took more out of me than I expected.

Still managed the prescribed tempo earlier today but it took high focus and effort.

Apologies from our hospital consultant to be about not answering a question on a running website from a chancer like me looking for free advice?! I love this place. Thanks Lou. Those weights are far heavier than I can manage, but I will google the types of exercises and see if they are sorts of things I can incorporate.

Hellen - if your legs aren't tired after a 20 + 20, it's prob cos you're just much better ultra trained than me! I did 23 (hilly) on Sat and 10 (quicker) on Sun and would expect legs to be mashed on Monday. Though actually I was less mashed than normal. I would expect heavy weights to also leave my legs tired. I think I just need to experiment with a mix of types of weights and exercises and see what I can fit in.

A clubmate said he was advised to do weights in morning and intervals (or other hard session) in the pm, on the basis that the DOMS, if there are any, kick in next day or even 2 days (the D in DOMS, of course). Interesting idea? :-) G

Agree Joe. Long, fast and flat can give me general fatigue and sore joints, but there's nothing like lots and lots of brutal hills for specific muscle trashing! :-) G

Talking of tired legs, my left quad and calf are starting to feel it now just three weeks into this schedule. So far so good though.

6x1km today off one minute recoveries which is far shorter than I'm used to. It told by the last couple of efforts as well as I was struggling big time to maintain the pace, even with a pretty slow first km.

3:47, 3:37, 3:38, 3:38, 3:42, 3:44.

A nice easier 8 into work tomorrow.
