I don't trust calorie burn TBH, and as I don't wear a HRM all the time I sort of lose that comparability.

I'm thinking more around how I keep variety in the runs that I do but comparability in their outcomes. I can choose hillier or flatter runs of similar lengths (and tbh there are ones that I do use for specific purposes - e.g. tempo - because I trust the validity of the pace there more). strava has a "suffer" score (for premium users) that relies on heart rate i think.

I'm sure I'm over-thinking it, but was just curious about how others approach this.

You are over thinking it. 20 undulating miles is normal!

I'd recommend finding repeatable flat routes for MP and for tempo sessions (and/or intervals too, for that matter). Pace matters not just in now versus goal terms, but in this month versus last month terms. Unless the target race is really undulating, then it's better do all all race pace and 'effort' stuff on flat ground. Even if that means a small loop over, and over, and over. See WW, Tizer, or Marigold training logs. I do it someitmes too (10 x 1m laps of the local park).

By all means seek out the undulating runs for your 'general' type runs, especially before and in the first part of the training plan. But don't fret too much about pace comparisons in those cases.

That sounds like sound advice Paul - as usual hitting the nail on the head, its the progression (or lack of!) issue I'm interested in. "I ran 10 miles at 7:30 last month and 10 miles at 7:20 this month" if the first run was on a hilly route and the second on a pan flat route makes for an unhelpful comparison.

To be honest I do try to repeat routes for that sort of purpose so I do have an eye for this anyway, and especially with a view to simulating likely race terrain, but with as strava tries to put a number on it, it does at least make me wonder how trustworthy people find it!

I guess my point was that I have certain 20 mile routes and they are lumpy. It doesn't make them less comparable. If I run the same route quicker than last year, then it is still quicker. Doesn't make the comparison less valid. You will also struggle to find a 'flat' marathon course. Personally - and all these things are personal - I would struggle with doing 4x5 mile loop for example as a 20 miler but I am quite happy to do 10 miles on a treadmill which *most* people would find boring (2 mile warm up; reset; 10k at chosen pace; reset; 2 mile warm down - done).

PtB refers to MP and tempo sessions. MP sessions would max at c14m and Tempos at c7m. Therefore you dont need 4 x 5m loops.

While its fair that a lumpy 20m route can be compare year on year I agree with Paul. My main effort runs (tempo, MP and Intervals) will be done on a flat route.

I am lucky to have a flatoish canal path within 3 miles and so a run of 18 with 14 at MP can be done quite easily with 3 mile easy, 14 mp and 1 easy and most of it on the flat. I can also use the same for tempos or intervals although I tend to do these on laps of a 1.4m park for these

Fair enough - wrong end of the stick (me) - but the point would still be valid, it doesn't really matter as long as it is comparable. So I am agreeing in a clumsy way (and always was).

it also depends what your target event is. There's no point doing all your training on flat courses so you can track progress week-on-week if your planning on running Windermere or Langdale.
