Flopsie, you can ask for a referral to you local IAPT service (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies). On p2211 I put some details of how to view your local services and some even take self-referrals. I work in mental health services, and unfortunately some GPs don't think to refer unless the person requests it.

Thanks pink fairy, I'll have a look into that :) I always thought that would be an option for gp's.

Flopsie - please don't worry about taking the Citalopram, many of us here are on it (me included) and it's very good for a lot of people, but obviously not all.

You may get some mild side effects, but bear with, and maybe mention on here if you're worried. If you get serious side effects, then obviously straight back to the docs, and they can find something more suitable for you - I think docs are pretty used to that.

Thanks Liliacha. I think that was my main concern for pills, side effects and having to take them forever. Really I just want to be me again and I need to do whatever to get there. Obviously everything I tried wasn't helping, no point going to docs if I'm not going to listen I suppose. Not took first pill yet but will do soon. It's great to hear it has helped so many of you, it fills me with hope :)

Sorry hadn't realised you were Scottish (I started my training up there). You should still be able to access primary care psychological/ counselling services so definitely worth asking.

If you have the time/ inclination it's worth having a little google about the difference between psychology and counselling. Psychology probably has more of a focus on understanding the origins of your difficulties and was of changing- you would most likely be offered cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) as a first option. Counselling traditionally has a less directive focus and provides more of a 'space to think/ talk aloud'. My preference is psychology, but as a psychologist I would say that (I will acknowledge my bias in promoting psychological services!). I did do some counselling training a few years ago, but it was a bit too 'fluffy' and not evidence-based enough for me.

Carpathius
Flopsie, that's a great step forward. AD's do help and once you've lifted a bit counselling or something would probably be good.

Lili, I wish you'd got some answers (((Lili)))

Hope everyone else is ok, and Sheri that things are getting better.

Not been offering much support here, sorry. I was getting on really well, had a big dip but was recovering and then my grandpa died unexpectedly a few days ago :(

Oh no Carpathius - I'm so sorry to hear this. Hope you're doing ok. It's so hard, especially when unexpected. Take care of yourself xxx

Husband has been put up to 200mg quetiapine after bad night and phone call with CPN today. So now on that plus 40mg citalopram and diazepam as needed. Meds seem to change day by day!

Thanks Sheri x

They'll find the right meds combination. Things won't always be this dark. I was where your husband sounds like he is in Dec/Jan and I'm a million miles from there now, even if the distance reduces when I'm really struggling.
