Great advice WW, thanks! I am guilty of being mesmerised by the 3hr line, but prob not enough to truly focus my training to it ;-)

Also fully appreciate the difference between 3:00 and 3:10, I've also thought of pacing by HR rather than time (I'm crap at pacing anyway), or just running by feel and trying to simmer not boil. In reality I think a lot will depend on how I feel on the day, I'm a peaky runner and feel strong at the moment, see if that carries through the next 2 weeks!?

I *think* that it's your age on the prospective London marathon date, rather than your age when you ran the qualifying time that matters. So in 2018 (and in fact in 2017) it'll be the 41+ time you need to have under your belt.

WW is right - for most folk on this thread, and on the 3:15 too, there is a big difference between PB shape and 10min outside PB shape. That's because we're all taking this fairly seriously, and putting in fairly consistent mileage and fair amounts of dedication. If someone popped in from the sub 2:45 thread, then they would probably not see a huge difference between the fitness and training needed for sub-3 and sub-3:15, baecause it's far from their own personal limit.

So - if you're packing the ability to go much faster, and just haven't tapped in to it yet, then give it a go by all means. I have no idea what the answer to that is, we don't know much about you yet!

My guess is that you're going to find it difficult enough running (say) 26.2m x 7.15m/m pace. Unless you are gifted, or have a *ton* of long runs and mileage done, then it's going to be tough. And - the faster you start, the tougher it is going to be at the end ;-)

I've been referred to as a bit special, but never gifted ;-) and thanks again for the advice.

Whether I get the marathon time I'm after or not I've enjoyed upping the miles and certainly helped my running in general including the 5k times :-)

100% it is age on race day. I run my marathon aged 40 but qualified for GFA as 41 on race day (even though I had to defer in the end!)

Cheers Daz, that's a bonus. There's a big difference between 3:05 and 3:15 and thought those 4 days might have hurt my GFA chances!

Not feeling guilty about skipping a long run this weekend, still feeling the effects of a long bike ride on Thursday...

Have bought P&D on a whim (v cheap 2nd hand copy off amazon) since so many seem to follow it. Haven't got very far in but am surprised at the lack of threshold pace running in the plans - less than one session a week in the 50-70 mile 18 wk plan which is closest to what I'll be aiming at. Jack Daniels probably has double that, always one and often two per week. Since the latter seems to work well for me I don't think I'll be changing horses, but hope to get something out of the book.

Jdarun - I noticed with P&D that it looks OK on paper. Couple of weeks in I thought differently.

I find it's the cumulative effect in p and d that works. One effort one medium long run and a long one per week usually with the faster last five. I plan to try Daniels next time though as I need to change approach to eek the last few seconds out.
